what would you do if the USPS closes down?

24 hours ago I would have said, "huh, couldn't happen" but now who knows? If the authorities think the virus could live on the mail?

For myself I always have a backlog of listing and inventory work that doesn't get done. But that would last at the outside a few or several days depending on how long I quake under the bedsheets. Always work in the garden though. Plus books to read. I have at least 100 of those.

My son (restaurant worker) just had his hours cut way back, so for him that means playing even more Pokemon Go unless they want everyone to go into quaranteen.

I have repertory issues

They told you to stop attending operas? 🙂

No need - they closed the opera here...and everything else, including the gyms.  No more grinding out the iron until one pukes and then seeing Cavalleria Rusticana afterwards.

Re: what would you do if the USPS closes down?

I have already ended (hopefully temporarily) my listings because I self-ship and I do not want to stand in line at the USPS anyway now and it's not safe enough in my urban area with all the porch pirates to place packages out on my porch hoping the USPS carrier beats the pirates to my packages. Also, I need to manually enter tracking numbers into the ebay system. Hopefully all of us can get through this health crisis safely and things soon return to "normal". I do have youtube to entertain me as well as a pile of books here to read.

Bless their postal souls! Like elsewhere the local libraries are now closed, most if not all booksales cancelled.  So sources of inventory are now all but nil. Having no mail service would spell even more doom and gloom.

Fortunately I have a backlog of books and stuff to work on and there is always inventory work to do. At this point my main question is where to take books I otherwise donate to the library.  I do not have enough boxes to just box them up and put them in a corner.

Re: what would you do if the USPS closes down?

considering how long Priority Mail has been taking (6 of last 7 PM mailings have taken 4 full days for delivery, including 3 in state--and one of those was sent to a buyer 2 hours away...it took 4 days), I assumed USPS was close to shut down already.  Or did I miss a notice from USPS saying that PM is now slower than 1st class?

Re: what would you do if the USPS closes down?

@keziak  Well, this morning was interesting heading to ship weekend sales ... normally I am there when the Post Office doors open at 8 but ran a little late and got there at 9 AM ... no cars in the Customer parking spaces ... got to the counter and the regular clerk said, "this is crazy!  Monday morning's are usually mobbed but you are ONLY my 3rd customer!"

I also noticed how little traffic there was on my way there and back ... I also stopped at the local convenience store which is normally packed ... there were 3 customers and most employees were cleaning and wiping down surfaces ...

I think our Society is doing some semi-self quarantining ... lots of kids are home from school ...

Yesterday, Sunday, I didn't notice any fall-off in people out and about. On Saturday my husband went on a hike and the trails were packed. But that is a good thing, it's Spring and people, especially kids,  could really benefit from fresh air and exercise.

Re: what would you do if the USPS closes down?

I'm glad the mail carriers in my area are still doing local pickups. I tied a thank you tag to a travel size bottle of hand sanitizer and left it in the mail box for my carrier today.

Re: what would you do if the USPS closes down?

Spoiler
coffeebean 832   How nice of you, there is none to be found here  Around here people are in a panic mode ( I believe in being safe not panicked ) Everyone was packed into Walmart cleaning it out. I think most people have been watching to many disaster movies . I always have  enough food for a week if I really dig to the back of my cabinets and get the cans out that I really don't know why I bought them so my only panic purchase was my fav coffee. And I would say that most people are the same if they get creative. I doubt they close the post office/ups/fedex down but they may have to curb service  Not everyone will be sick at the same time so some people will be getting well and coming back to work as others get sick. No need to take listings down yet I might add longer shipping time to make up for slower service

Thanks- I believe in community and looking out for each other.

Funny you mention that about disaster movies- last night I logged in to Netflix and saw that the movie Outbreak was on the day's 10 most popular list.

I borrowed that one right when the virus broke out.  A thoughtful movie.

Re: what would you do if the USPS closes down?

Is that the one with Matt Damon and a brief appearance by Gwenyth Paltrow? I suggest anybody who can't control their panic and stress not watch it- it will hit too close to home. However if you can keep a level head then it's an interesting movie.
