FEES - Outrageous

I am no longer selling on eBay as of this week.  My fees were too high in my opinion which was 13% for Final Value.  However, I will continue to purchase items on Ebay which are an excellent source and good variety.  Bye, bye, to high fees, Ebay.

Re: FEES - Outrageous

The fees are a part of the equation on all online Selling platforms. Please tell us what would be a fair platform fee.

Best of luck & please continue to support small online sellers on ebay.

Goodbye and good luck to you!

I noticed ebay sellers are so polite.

They always let us know of their departure.   😃

Back before Managed Payments  eBay FVFs were 10% +  PayPal  charged 2.9% +30 cents.  What is so outrageous about  the current fee structure???

"...comparing the ebay venue that wants 30% of your item's selling price..."

...say what?

I just sold a game for $30.00 and I paid 4.15 + .30 in fees. 30% would be around 9.00.

I got  $25.85 in net proceeds.

@monica-sells

Yes - RIGHT NOW ebay wants approximately 30% of my items selling price - My average fees run about 18% of my items selling price - ebay "recommends" I give them another 8% to 10% of my entire sale to promote the listing in order to sell here - I can only take that as something that is close to imperative if the site is "recommending" it, especially when I see post after post of sellers complaining they need to promote at 10% or more in order to keep their sales consistent - So another 8% to 10% of the entire sale is asking me to give them approximately 11%-13% more of my items selling price - so emphatically YES, ebay wants me to give them approximately 30% of my items selling price...

I look at things in a forward thinking way and it keeps me safe - I hedged my full time selling here with a part time supervisor position at UPS when Promoted Listings started back in 2018 - I could see the effects of this program right from the start and made sure I would not be painted into a corner like many sellers are here - I'm not going to get into how sales have been impacted with an ebay apologist, because they have whether you are willing to admit it or not - Its easy to see the impact promoted listings have had on sales for many sellers since they started implementing it - Thing is, if you dont think this site is not making an attempt at making promoted listings essential?, then in forward-thinking, lets revisit this post 2 years from now...

Re: FEES - Outrageous

You made a blanket statement in a thread that was opened with.....

OP--->"...My fees were too high in my opinion which was 13% for Final Value..."

I fail to see where Promoted Listings were mentioned, asked about, or relevant to the OP's original question.

I took your statement to imply that 30% was the normal.....

of course it's possible....

PL is part of the equation if it applies to you...

My opinion of PL is the same as my disdain for the original pay-to-play Google AdWords (yep...I am old), Etsy Ads, and paying the B&M for the best shelf space on the wall.....

If ebay is taking 30% of your item sale; then you are simply doing something wrong (math or high promotions?).

I've sold about $120k to 150k a year for 12 years and NEVER paid more than 13% which INCLUDES a 2% Minimum 'Promotion Fee' tacked on (even using ebay fees with PP fees etc.)

5 most recent sales since Thursday: and the 'PAID' includes the fee on buyers sales tax:
Paid $12.55 on a $99.99 sale (12.6%)

Paid $5.14 on $39.99 Sale (12.9%)

Paid $6.13 on $39.99 Sale (13.3%)

Paid $8.69 on $69.71 Sale (12.7%)

Paid $18.95 on $159.95 Sale (11.5%)

Total of the 5: Paid $51.16 on $409.63 Sales for a 12.5% fee

In fact; 2022 paid $$18,830 on $142,286 in Sales for a 13.2% Fee (which includes $60 month/$720 yr for a Store.

13.2% and that is WITH SALES TAX and WITH 1% Promotions.

So again, you are doing something very wrong if you pay anywhere near 30%.

So let me get this straight - Seems you are comparing the ebay venue that wants 30% of your item's selling price for an item you need to do ALL THE WORK and take ALL THE RISK with absolutely no guarantee whatsoever the sale will even stand if it sells, with a consignment shop that takes your item, cares for it, cleans it, stables it and takes all the risk to sell it for you who wants 50% of the sale and you think ebay is a bargain? - Given the value of my time and sanity, I'll take the consignment deal any day, any time, on any item...

If that is the case then why do you have 2.4K sold items here along with 14 listings running right now...?

@stainlessenginecovers

Wow just more smoke and mirror - First off, I didnt say I am paying 30% - I said ebay wants 30%  - I refuse to give it to them.

Second you offer free shipping, so your situation is different - You present the figures in your post like its net profit after fees - Thats more smoke and mirror since your items selling price isnt realized until you pay the cost to ship it.

Lets use your $99.00 sale as an example. You say you paid 12.6% of the total sale, and based on your statement, the total sale includes the taxes. So lets assume then your fees are based on a $107.00 sale with 8% sales tax. To keep things simple, I wont get into what kind of reduced Final Value Fee rate you get with your store subscription and just go straight to the point.

Point Being, your selling price of $99.00 does not include shipping since you offer free shipping... Lets assume you had to pay a $12.50 shipping fee on the item. So that means that your item selling price was $86.50 and you paid $12.55 in fees, plus we need to add $1.00 more in fees to cover the cost of your monthly store subscription, which brings your total fees to $13.50(rounded for your benefit). $13.50 is $15.6% of $86.50(That is the true fee percentage coming off the top of your realized selling price in this scenario, not 12.6%)

So then, if ebay is recommending that your promote your listing at their "recommended" rate of 9% of the entire sale including shipping,  that means they are WANTING you to pay approximately 25+% of the selling price of your $86.50 item that you sold for $99.00 with "Free Shipping" - Even with your Store Discount, your numbers are not far off from what I stated and I am sure you sell items with fee shipping where the shipping takes up a much larger percentage of the total sale, which of course would push the numbers closer to, or over what I stated...

Confused?...Good, cause thats exactly what the site hopes for when it comes to fees - Given your annual sales, surely you have an accountant who tells you what your net sales after fees and shipping are right? If so, I dont understand how you can present the number the way you did in your post - Surely your profit is something you care about and if so, then you MUST realize that ebay is taking MORE than 12.6% right off the top and is asking you for much more with the "Recommendations" they are pushing down our throats - and push seems to come to shove on this site.

@itsjustasprain

Ok I'll explain it to you - Thats because I sold most of those 2.4K items in the first 2-3 years I had this account running from 2016 to 2019 - You know, back when you still had a chance to win a case, when the final value fees were lower, when you could still talk to an ebay rep, when you weren't paying FVFs on taxes, when they weren't pushing promoted listings down your throat, when the algorithms weren't hopelessly screwed/skewed, etc, etc, etc, etc... So yes in 2016-2019 I sold in a semi-happy state(though my happiness level was at its highest back in 2003-2008 - that was comic book heaven) and then they rolled out their Promoted Listings Program - I saw the writing on the wall and could see where it would lead - Didnt want any part of it out of principle, so took a supervisor job at UPS and basically all but stopped listing - though I have not let up on adding to my collections.

Now? In comparison with the current state of ebay, the idea of consignment is looking pretty darn good...I've actually never used consignment, but I would before I listed my most valuable items on ebay. I'm in no hurry, waiting to see what venue is going to be the first to roll back the insanity or create a better way - in the meantime, I'm working on a website idea with a group of like minded collectors of video games, sneakers, cards, comics, action figures, etc - we'll see what happens...
