Restocking Fees

So this recent seller update is very confusing to me in terms of restocking fees.

I read through the update several times and asked multiple reps if I can still charge a restocking fee, so I'm under the impression that I can.

In the case of a buyer's remorse return request, I was told to manually refund the buyer if I want to charge the restocking fee, then call eBay so they can close out the case and get my final value fee to me.

I've been doing this and eBay has been refunding the buyer the restocking fee after I call them to close the case. I asked them about this and a rep told me that eBay covered the fee, so I still get the restocking fee but the buyer gets a full refund. I double checked my PayPal and found that wasn't the case, because the restocking fee was also refunded out of my account.

I called eBay today to ask what the deal was and was (very rudely) told that restocking fees are not allowed unless the buyer agrees to it.

I have the restocking fee clearly stated in my listing, so I'm operating under the assumption that the customer agrees to the restocking fee by purchasing the item.

I only charge this fee in situations that call for it (customer sends the item back without tags, or sends it back showing signs of wear), since eBay makes us accept these returns.

Does anyone have experience charging restocking fees since this recent seller update?

Re: Restocking Fees

Restocking fees havent been allowed since May of this year..as usual, what the reps told you is wrong. You will refund the buyer any restocking fee, not Ebay.

Re: Restocking Fees

That's what I thought when I read the seller update, but when I asked (multiple) eBay reps, they said I can continue charging it for buyer's remorse cases. This is just confusing.

Unfortunately  bad info

from customer service is somewhat common. Restocking fees are not allowed, period.

however if you offer free returns, you can issue a partial refund if the buyer returns the item in a different condition (item was new, buyer returns it used or damaged). Also this applies if you sell in a few select categories including collectives & art, cameras and yard, garden & outdoor.

Re: Restocking Fees

I was looking into the free returns/partial refunds option but didn't see my category listed (clothing).

Maybe I'm just forgetting what I read, but when the seller update came out, I don't remember them having a dedicated question in the FAQ to restocking fees. I wonder if they can add/change things after the seller update comes out?

For clothing, you have to offer free returns in order to issue a partial refund if the item is not returned in its original condition.

Ebay hasn’t added or changed anything since the update came out, as far as restocking fees & free returns goes.  Restocking fees have been completely eliminated and unless you offer free returns, you have to refund in full unless you sell in one of the few categories mentioned in the spring update. Restocking fees are addressed under “simplified returns” but there’s nothing in the FAQ about it.

Re: Restocking Fees

The sentence, "Restocking fees will no longer be a return option" was in the Spring seller update on the day it came out.

Here's. a thread from the release date of the update, referring to it.

Re: Restocking Fees

The Top Rated Plus FAQ has a question regarding restocking fees, but I figured that only applied to people who wanted Top Rated status.

Well, I'm definitely not calling eBay to resolve confusion about anything else from now on! Thanks for clearing that up for me!

Oh ok, I'm sorry I had incorrectly assumed you were talking about the seller update FAQ 🙂

You can always come here & get quick, accurate info instead of calling ebay, there are even some ebay employees that post 🙂

Re: Restocking Fees

Will definitely do that from now on, I guess it's too much work for eBay reps to give accurate info over the phone! Thank you!

Re: Restocking Fees

Was just shopping and noticed that seller states in the item description that "Returns accepted with a $10 restocking fee for this item."

I thought that restocking fees were eliminated last June?  Are we- sellers, permitted to charge restocking fees in this manner?

Nope. That seller is likely clueless, hasn't updated his listings, and will be here in the forums howling that eBay ripped him off by not allowing him to withhold a restocking fee or notifying him of the policy changes (other than in the seller updates, and emails, and.... 🙂

Re: Restocking Fees

thank you. it's worded in the body of the listing. don't think that it would even be possible.
