Back charged by UPS.

I was back charged $17.24 for supposedly using a 10'x39'x(9') box when it was in fact a 10'x39'x(8") box via stacking a series of 10"x8"x(10"-tall) standard Home Depot "EXTRA SMALL" boxes. They also stated a billable weight of 22 lbs when in fact the UPS receipt states 6.625 lbs.

Can I remedy this? I don't see an option to dispute.

Thank you.

Regarding: Tracking number 1Z14V36VYW24800437, Order number: 22-13570-77867.

Re: Back charged by UPS.

Looks accurate.

Billable weight is dimentional weight or actual weight, whichever is greater.

Dimentional appears around 23 lbs.

Also it's really easy for those stacked to get squeezed or shifted to add an extra inch, which the ups rounds up.

So i don't think an error was made here.

@snoking
Actual weight and billable weight are two different things.

UPS answers how they define it here:

read the link under

What is billable weight and how do I calculate it?

Sort of. Not necessarily in the way you're asking, but the remedy going forward is to ensure you're measuring each span at its widest point. Configuring boxes in the manner you describe will have flaps overlapping each other in the middle. Measure there, because it adds a bit of thickness all around.

FYI. You always have to double-check the exterior dimensions yourself. Most of the time, when boxes are sold, the description gives you the interior dimensions, but you have to use exterior dimensions to calculate shipping. (Yes, I know that the dimension pictures on the listing imply that they are the exterior dimensions, but you have to check yourself.)

Re: Back charged by UPS.

As of recently, UPS and Fedex both now require you to ROUND UP fractions of inches. Stated box dimensions are often the INSIDE dimensions, making the OUTSIDE ones slightly larger.

With USPS you can round down up to 1/2 an inch, if you try to do this with UPS or Fedex you will be billed for the difference.

Re: Back charged by UPS.

UPS has been charging me recently even though I always round up. I will probably stop buying the labels on eBay if I have to use them from now on as there is no way to dispute easily here.

Re: Back charged by UPS.

A 10x8x10 box is actually 11x9x11 (for shipping purchases as the box size is typically the 'inside' of the box)
