Is it 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month 3 months? If an issue is pertinent to today's issues why close a thread?
When I search a subject on ebay's search nowhere does it say that we are not accepting any further comments.
Sometimes these actions look like the thought police do not like what is being said here or the tattletaler who do not like the issue complain to ebay.
Here is an example of the note on some threads.
Hello Everyone,
Due to the age of the thread, it has been closed to further replies. Please feel free to start a new thread if you wish to continue to discuss this topic.
Thanks for understanding!

But again, 'aim' is not hard and fast. It's a goal, a guideline. I've seen threads closed with replies more recent that 6 months and threads stay open where the most recent post before the bump was far more than 6 months. Whether that's the Team's doing or it's left up to the discretion of the Mod recieving the report or monitoring the board is a different question.
Simply stated, not all threads closed or left open meet that 6 month test.

I don't see that as a bad thing, @chrysylys. If necessary, we do have the ability to review threads on a case by case basis and make a call on whether the right thing to do for the Community is to leave it opened or closed.

Yup, then there is something like this non-productive rant.
Started on 4-13-17 where it pretty much ended, but because another ranter popped in on 10-01-17 it is still open for the latest rant of 1-29-18 that apparently by the latest archive methodology will keep it open for more usless posts/bumps, for another 6 months.
I was not on a thread witch hunt, just hit again without checking the date:)

Thanks for the example. I've locked that topic. FYI - we haven't yet archived our Knowledge Base Q&A boards. We tackled the discussion boards, which are where the majority of our posts happen, and users spend their time. We'll look into doing the Q&A boards next.

I didn't say it was. Flexibility is good. The point is that six months is not the only factor as some think it is. As in my original reply above, it's about whether or not the thread is still timely and serving a useful purpose.
Many of the threads that prompted this discussion were not and were closed.

I suppose that's subjective

The mods are good about locking those kind of threads if you report them. Maybe it changed but they were locking threads that were started 6+ months ago, not just threads that hadn't had a reply in 6 months. The buying board seems to get a lot of revived threads and the mods are good about locking them 🙂

Thanks Alan, Being that you are the community manager I take it that you are the final word on this issue.
I suppose I am
If you have feedback/think we should be doing it another way do let me know.
Thanks.
Thanks for letting me know that you are the final word on this.
Why then are threads being closed that are less than 6months old.
If you ever heard of "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" then you know what I mean.
I expect the few who do not like my and other peoples opinions have notified ebay and had threads closed even though it is within the 6 months., while that many who like to have a conversation on both sides have no need to contact ebay.
Also when on the board it shows popular discussions that are over your 6 month guideline.
why if you do not want people to post after 6 month?

Hi @mallontown,
We love all posters of the posters in our Community
It'd be helpful if you could provide a link to the board in your screenshot, though I guess it as a Q&A board. As I've mentioned a couple times already, we haven't yet archived content on our Q&A boards.
Thanks!

not sure what you mean by Q and A board.
My reference is from this board. Just checked now.

There are 2 outdated links in the 3 that are promoted
02-09-2018 08:07 AM
alan@ebay you asked for examples so I am reposting
items in the post above are still being promoted as "Popular Board Discussions"
I was mistaken saying it was 2 out of 3, it actually all 3 that are past the 6-month guideline with one over a year old and still being able to post to them.
So why is ebay punishing people who post to these threads when ebay is the one promoting them?
02-09-2018 10:13 AM
Hi @mallontown,
How are we "punishing" members that reply to topics in the"Popular Board Discussions" widget?
The 6-month guideline is: threads that haven't had a reply in 6 months. A thread may be more than 6 months old, but if it has received a reply in the last 6 months then it would still be considered active.
Thanks.

First, thank you for taking this thread out of the archive after my email to you earlier today, I feel that exchange of ideas is good and burying thought is not a good practice.
I have to ask you if I will be punished further by posting the answer to your question.
If not and you have control or outrank lithium employees then I will post here with your approval.
I do not know the hierarchy and you are saying 1 thing and lithium is saying the opposite.
Just let me know and I can post for all to see (you already have the info I sent in regular email today so you may want to keep that info for yourself)
Also thanks for the info on the threads.
Some on this board have said it was a hard 6 months and not 6 months without a reply.
Some on other boards use the code word necrothread as a way to notify Lithium for threads that are over 6 months old. They get closed but should not as those treads have received a reply within the 6 month guideline.
I don't understand how some people think that its ok to hide information.

Hi @mallontown,
I've checked all my inboxes - I haven't received an email from you. The easiest way to contact me is to send me a Community Private Message.

I received a notice of your reply in my regular email. I could not reply to this thread as it was archived for some reason. So I hit reply to sender and it went to The eBay Community .
I have sent the same exact message through private messages as requested
