How many Posting IDs are you allowed to have on The Community?

I'm curious if there is a limit to the number of Posting IDs one can have here on The Community?

I'm not a network admin but my ex is so I have limited knowledge. A Mac address is static. Ebay delivers tokens to machines we log into. An IP address is not always set up to be static, and many work behind a proxy.

Then there's the times that someone claimed an entire dorm was shut down because of a bad seller or buyer, unsubstantiated. Then there's the times I myself have used the library to print out a label if my printer flaked out on me. Does ebay keep track of that IP address too? And what about when a seller/poster uses public wifi ? Is on a work network? Or a friend/relative logs in?

It all gets very complicated.

the mac address is the most fudge-proof.  it is extremely hard to change and if you miss a step or do it wrong, the system is toast until you put in a new motherboard/chip combo.  it is the mac address that most sites track since ipn's and vpn's don't affect it.  if a mac address is blocked, it is blocked period.  i am pretty sure that ebay knows this also, since it would be a dinosaur IT department if they didn't.  i don't give IT much credit, but they can not NOT know about mac addresses and blocking etc and still code for a multi-user/network/internet environment without knowing.  ebay just doesn't care enough about blocking the abusers is my belief.  if they did care, the policy would be widely publicized AND enforced.

The funny thing is, Greg5000 is actually another eBay member, my User ID is: greg5000, with a lowercase G.

No, there isn't a member with the id "Greg5000." Member ids cannot contain capital letters.

I just replied to you on another post.

I agree that what we see are all lowercase letters, but eBay's policy info shows uppercase letters in examples of User ID's.

Interesting. So you don't think it's the IP address? eBay must use something to link two accounts, though. Maybe some other shared or common information used to create an account? Addresses? Phone numbers?

most likely the mac address as it shows thru regardless of ipn or vpn in use.

Not sure about the uppercase letters, as there is a member ID that was created as Greg5000 and is still in the system.

I used all the search tools I know of to find "Greg5000" as a member ID that "is still in the system." Like @loveyourimagination49 , I couldn't find it.  A screenshot or snippet, maybe? Or how you found that member ID?

Based on working with eBay on various issues in the past, they link based on various things such as:

- IP

- Address/account information on file.

- PayPal account

- PayPal address/account information on file.

- Cookies ( to a lesser extent)

They don't link strictly because of just 1 either. I believe that 2 or more must match before it becomes an actual "link".

FYI, this information was current as of 2017, and they may have integrated more ways to link accounts nowadays. For example, they may have began emulating Amazon's ways of linking accounts, which also links based on machine, and even scours social media accounts.

I’m not seeing the id you are referencing.

I think it's an inactive account (which wouldn't show here).

Not sure how ID's were processed and set-up over the years (I joined in 2010).  I know that what's displayed is all lowercase, but eBay's policy states:

Username policy overview

Your username is the unique name that you use to identify yourself on eBay, like SuperSeller or Nothing_but_Posters.

You can see uppercase letters used in the examples above.

I use Advanced to search and if an account is not valid, it will kickback an error message.  When I enter Greg5000 it looks like a valid ID.

This is true.

To my knowledge, eBay did NOT check macID's. (At least as of 2017, as mentioned, this may have changed). They mainly did IP matching for this.

Re: How many Posting IDs are you allowed to have on The Community?

I signed up in 2001 using caps within my id. I’m not sure when it was switched to lowercase.

Everyone has options. Just be sure the best option is right for you.

Re: How many Posting IDs are you allowed to have on The Community?

Well, I had to check it out.

I changed my ID.   I changed a letter to a cap.

As seen here it shows an upper case J, but when signed it it is a lower case.

Now I have to live with my new ID for 30 days:(

Saw that after the change.  Has been a few months. One seller that I sometimes look at has had 7-8 ID changes. A few months back all the ID's could be seen.

the only reason i can think for ebay to hide this info now is to promote and allow such actions as abuse.  can you think of any others?
