How many Posting IDs are you allowed to have on The Community?

I'm curious if there is a limit to the number of Posting IDs one can have here on The Community?

Not sure why you posted my User ID and then a smiling/winking emoji?

Please enlighten as to what you meant by this?

One has a capital "G" and the other a lower case "g" ... technically not the same ID ...

I thought the poster was curious as to what other ID I had used to post with on this board.  I used the smiling/winking emoji to indicate I was only joking of course about using your ID.

When I work on one of my other IDs for any length of time, for some reason, it signs me out of this ID and into that ID.  I have checked off the option not to do this, but it still happens.  If I don't catch it, I have posted using "inthewoodspam" occasionally.

@dasarock   Okay, your post at least points to something that may be happening.  About 2 weeks about I started to notice a number of New Sellers - Community Members posting mainly on 3 different boards but generally all the same type questions.  I didn't think much of it at first then I had a de-ja-vu moment thinking, "didn't I just answer this question?"  So I went back and started checking IDs, country of origin, etc. and realized they are from a country that has no eBay selling domain  ... few of them seemed to reply so I thought maybe they "think" they have to create a new ID each time the log on ... anyway, below are two pics ... one is for all the domains around the world, the other is a couple "sanitized" FB pages from the sellers ... none of the IDs have anything listed for sale ...

Thank you for posting that! I thought it was in the rules once upon a time but it isn't now. Seems to me that the rules have been greatly simplified in writing but maybe not in application. Both in the community and on the site itself.

I remember the days of intimidation and similar ids. It used to be like the Wild West around here. I've also had some pretty nasty stalkers over the years. It seems like some people don't believe others should have their own opinions.

As far as multiple IDs go, I keep mine straight between Ebay and the boards by using a totally different browser. I have always been one to drop in and out so I never remember who is aligned with who, or even the IDs of people who have attacked me before. Every day is like a whole new brain.

I only have one User ID on eBay for my account and also here at Community Boards, which is:  greg5000

The other one belongs to someone else.  If eBay were following proper security protocols, this wouldn't be allowed (i.e. same ID except for lowercase vs. uppercase character).

I'm not a network admin but my ex is so I have limited knowledge. A Mac address is static. Ebay delivers tokens to machines we log into. An IP address is not always set up to be static, and many work behind a proxy.

Then there's the times that someone claimed an entire dorm was shut down because of a bad seller or buyer, unsubstantiated. Then there's the times I myself have used the library to print out a label if my printer flaked out on me. Does ebay keep track of that IP address too? And what about when a seller/poster uses public wifi ? Is on a work network? Or a friend/relative logs in?

It all gets very complicated.

It was a joke. There is no "Greg5000." Member ids can't contain uppercase letters.

LOL ... now I get it!

That's one of your best posts. Smiley Happy

The funny thing is, Greg5000 is actually another eBay member, my User ID is: greg5000, with a lowercase G.

Interesting. So you don't think it's the IP address? eBay must use something to link two accounts, though. Maybe some other shared or common information used to create an account? Addresses? Phone numbers?

No, there isn't a member with the id "Greg5000." Member ids cannot contain capital letters.

AFAIK there are no rules about posting with multiple ids as long as they do not interact. Like for instance if a poster is getting negative comments, they use a different id to make fake support posts. Another situation I've seen is that a poster uses multiple ids to attack another poster.

I'm not sure if the "interacting" part is being enforced these days. I've seen instances of users using multiple ID's to back up their arguments and no action was taken.

Based on working with eBay on various issues in the past, they link based on various things such as:

- IP

- Address/account information on file.

- PayPal account

- PayPal address/account information on file.

- Cookies ( to a lesser extent)

They don't link strictly because of just 1 either. I believe that 2 or more must match before it becomes an actual "link".

FYI, this information was current as of 2017, and they may have integrated more ways to link accounts nowadays. For example, they may have began emulating Amazon's ways of linking accounts, which also links based on machine, and even scours social media accounts.

Not sure about the uppercase letters, as there is a member ID that was created as Greg5000 and is still in the system.  I'm only seeing ID's with lowercase when they display on listings.

This is what eBay says regarding setting up an ID (which shows uppercase letters in their example):

Username policy overview

Your username is the unique name that you use to identify yourself on eBay, like SuperSeller or Nothing_but_Posters.
