Forum thread sequence

Is there a way to have posts in these threads actually follow a logical sequence?
Many, many  times,  some replies are coming way before the post they're responding to.

Re: Forum thread sequence

Not really possible, I can not reply to something not posted already - maybe check your settings in

Preferences under Display incase some default has clicked in or a setting has been altered.

Re: Forum thread sequence

@momdadsstash,

There are a couple of possibilities that might help you to change the order the posts so they show up the way you like.

There used to be a way that you could change settings for your Community Account (Settings > Preferences > Display) but there doesn't seem to be any Display option there anymore. I think they must have removed it at some point. @downunder-61

I'm not sure which of the sort orders shown below will work for you, so try them out. Whatever setting you've got for the sort order, try the others until you find one that makes sense for you. I prefer "Sort oldest to newest" so that the posts are in chronological order.

You may find that you need to change this for each board, I'm not sure if a change on this board (Selling) will carry over to other boards.

Re: Forum thread sequence

@momdadsstash

Are you referring to how the thread titles are displayed on the "main" title page that shows all the threads (with little snippets of each one)? Or how the posts inside an individual thread are displayed?

For how posts inside an individual thread are displayed, on the "main" page of each board, you can choose either "Threaded format" or "Linear format" for how posts inside each thread are delayed. That might help resolve the issue you're experiencing.

I prefer the linear format, but the threaded format will show a post and all the responses to that specific post, then the next post and all the responses to that one. Perhaps that's more what you're looking for?

On the desktop, the two styles appear on the dropdown menu labeled "Options" on the right-hand side of the screen.

If you're referring to how the threads are displayed on the main page, there are two options:

  1. "Sort by Latest Post Date," which will display thread titles based on when the last comment was posted, or
  2. "Sort by Topic Start Date," which will display thread titles chronologically as they are added to the board.

Both options are available under the "Options" dropdown menu on the right-hand side of the screen (on the desktop version). Only one option will appear at any given time--the one you have not selected. In other words, if you are currently sorting by "Sort by Latest Post Date," the other option ("Sort by Topic Start Date") is the only one that will appear and vice versa.

If you are referring to something other than addressed in previous messages, post again with more detail.

Re: Forum thread sequence

Mine is in a logical order.

Click on "options" on the right side of the page under the green search bar.

You can select how posts are displayed.

Just curious . . . which option did you change to make it easier for you to follow things?

Oldest to newest seems to make  it work "right"

Re: Forum thread sequence

Whatever you do, don't go near anything described as "threaded".

Re: Forum thread sequence

@pburn, that's odd. You have different options than I do, as shown in my screenshot earlier.

Your choices are:

  • Threaded format
  • Linear format

And my choices are:

  • Sort by topics
  • Sort oldest to newest
  • Sort newest to oldest.

Edit to add:

This reply was posted at 11:28 AM EDT, and it's currently the last/latest reply on this thread. When I choose "Sort by topics" it's #7 (because it's the second reply to @pburn reply #5) or if I choose "Sort oldest to newest" it's #13 (and last).

Oh, I've got it. You were on the discussion board page, and on that page, you get the choice between threaded and linear format.

And I was in a thread, so I got choices for how the replies are sorted on the thread itself.

If I change the first setting to "Threaded format", then when I open a thread I only have two choices to sort the replies:

  • Sort oldest to newest
  • Sort newest to oldest.

Right--I figured it would be redundant to repeat what you'd already covered and thought I'd include more possibilities for the OP.
