Has anyone seen this announcement from ebay
After all those postings about scammers selling vehicles claiming to be eBay on Facebook Market Place. Wouldn't this integration make it difficult for us to convince a potential victim of the car scam that they are being scammed?
I wouldn't want my listings showing up on facebook. I hope there's an "opt out " for that.
Maybe I need coffee and wake up.

I just read the Announcement and thought .... this is an accident looking for a place to happen!
If I wanted my items on Facebook Marketplace I'd already be selling stuff on there that I don't list on eBay. If and when I use Facebook Marketplace it would only be for stuff that is Local Pickup and cash only. LOL

What happens when an item sells on Facebook Marketplace?
When an item from eBay sells through Facebook Marketplace, buyers will be redirected to eBay to finalize their purchase, following the same process as when they buy directly from eBay.com. Additionally, these sales will be protected by eBay's Money Back Guarantee and all other applicable eBay policies and protections.
Sounds like they will essentially be shown just as ads from other sites are in the Marketplace feed, and when clicked on will just bring you to the eBay listing.
I don't see the issue with it.

It would still make it difficult to convince a naive buyer the car they found on Facebook being sold by ebay doesn't exist.
That is the issue I see with it.

Yes, some will still fall for the car scams i am sure. The positive is that those who are afraid of doing cash deals or buying something that cannot be tested fully, this gives them better protections.
I do agree with @loose_goose_garage.
It will give those who buy on Marketplace better protections and payment options that they don't have now.

Drink more coffee.......... We've been begging/demanding that ebay deliver us more eyes........and hopefully this will bring more buyers.. As always......the devil is in the details........will it be "all" items or just focus categories....etc?

If you want your items on Facebook Marketplace, ebay will find a way to make you pay extra.

Monetization is the first thing that came to my mind as well. I have had only one cup of coffee this morning and I do need some more time to think this over.
How is this a benefit to Facebook? They already have a "fee based" service for sales entered by choosing the "will ship" form that puts you in for life and gives you a "Buy Button". Sellers are free not to use it, and ship anyway as designated in their description.
How is this a benefit to a seller that can indeed sell on Marketplace or a multitude of Buy/Sell groups buy submitting their own listings and not be subject to eBay fees? (I have sold on both for years simply for the cost of money processing i.e. PayPal or my Merchant Account).
If I want my items on Marketplace I would post them myself.

Yep, sell that 300 pound sofa, that was picked up, get an eBay SNAD, and have to fund the return? No thanks.

You realize it will just be a link to your eBay listing, correct?
It doesn't change a thing, it will just show your items in the marketplace feed, and if someone clicks on it, it will bring them to your eBay listing, on the eBay website.
No different than your item showing up in an eBay ad on any other website.

So if it just takes you to the ebay listing and you are not signed up for ebay will it make you sign up or will you buy as a guest? I know people who use FB but would never consider signing up for ebay.

Some very interesting and important context that eBay left out - Meta is doing this in response to the European Commission's November 2024 decision imposing a €797.72 million fine for breaching EU antitrust rules by tying its Facebook Marketplace to its social network and imposing unfair trading conditions on other online classified ads service providers. ( @ittybitnot - that answers your question about what's in it for them 😂)
Update on January 8, 2025 at 3:00 AM PT:
While we disagree with and continue to appeal the European Commission’s decision on Facebook Marketplace, we are working quickly and constructively to build a solution which addresses the points raised. Today, we will launch a test in Germany, France, and the US that will enable buyers to browse listings from eBay directly on Facebook Marketplace while completing their transaction on eBay. This could benefit people using both platforms. eBay sellers will gain exposure to Facebook’s audience while people using Marketplace will be able to discover a broader array of listings from the eBay community.
Who knows what the terms of the deal between eBay and Facebook are, but that could mean if the decision is reversed as Meta continues their appeal, things could change and this partnership may not be long-term.
And if you're wondering why the US would be included if the concern is the EU Commission ruling - there's an ongoing FTC case against Meta for pretty much the same thing headed to trial in April 2025, and eBay specifically came up during discovery, so odds are this is their attempt to get out ahead of it and show they are making efforts to address those concerns.
Other than that, these listings aren't exactly a "new" thing - eBay's official Facebook page previously had a Shop section with items featured that if you clicked on them, led to eBay for checkout, just like this describes and the only reason they stopped was Facebook forced Shops to start using onsite checkout in 2023.
Those listings were used primarily to promote focus vertical categories - ie. sneakers, trading cards, luxury fashion and accessories, auto parts, refurb electronics and home goods - and I expect that will likely be the same with the new listings.
I also suspect the one way that average sellers outside of those verticals will be able to increase their chances of being included will be to shell out for cost per click Off Site ads.
So the benefits are clear for Meta and eBay, and Wall Street seems to love the idea with eBay's stock popping ~5% on the news, but the benefits for average sellers who aren't willing to pay to play are less clear.
I'm sure eBay would simply say that more buyers coming to the site benefits everyone in a "rising tide lifts all boats" kind of way, but that's what they said about the "enthusiast buyer focus vertical" strategy too and that doesn't seem to have worked as well as eBay would like everyone to think.

Since it will just be taking you to the normal eBay site, there's no reason you couldn't check out as a guest.

Marketplace users will be taken to ebay if they see your ad, and have to complete the buying process there- so should be no big deal and if anything, just another venue your stuff would be seen. If a buyer doesn't want to buy on ebay, no skin off your nose.
To advertise Cars on Craigslist, the Samba etc. now cost $5 each listing, so the scammers all went bye bye.
FBMP will probably soon follow this system.
