Social security number wanted.

I have been a Ebay member buyer/seller since 1999 untill recently my account was frozen because I refuse to give up my SSN. No one should have to give up there SSN.the reason is that you will be reported to the IRS so that you will have to pay more taxes because its earn income.most of us who rely on making a few dollars are tax those of us who are retire and living on fix social security income depend on flea markets and garage sales for extra cash it's going to get to a point if you stop to use a restroom you will be tax it's out of control . I will close my account with Ebay and sell where I'm not under pressure to keep them happy the more you sale on Ebay the better they look there employees get pay and there stocks go up.

Paypal is not a selling platform. You need to read up on identity theft in DETAIL and then lets see if you are still so sure you want to give yours to a 3rd world county selling platform.

Adyen is NOT a company from a "3rd world country".  They are a Dutch company that have several offices here in the US like so many other foreign owned companies.  Their main US office is in California.

@mtgraves7984 was not suggesting that PP was a selling platform and they certainly didn't state that.  Often times on these threads MP is compared to PP because Ebay is switching us from PP to MP.  A very natural thing to compare the two.  While hard to do since PP is the unicorn here.  They are so flexible and easy to use because they are a full wallet.  MP is a basic money processing program, so it has a long way to go to be in PP's league!

Good luck with that local site you went to.  I sincerely hope it all works out for you.

Re: Social security number wanted.

I believe the elderly person is concerned because Ebay started out as an Auction site to part with things around your house.  Much like a flea market.  They marketed to clean out your basement and garage in the beginning.  Many of the older sellers sell old items for a few dollars.  They are cleaning out years of clutter and making a few dollars.  I am sure they are loosing money on what the item actually cost. And maybe at time lucky if it was a valuable item.   These are not the Professionals on here who do this for a living.

If they have to do the accounting for state ,local, and federal tax I am sure they would need need a Professional Accountant. I bet most make 2 or 3 thousand a year. And I doubt that it profit, once you take in time, packaging, internet use, driving the items to the post office.

Please be kind to these older folks people, they are the ones that made Ebay a Success. It was Ebay that changed and made it harder on them.

Have a great day.

"They said I'd have to create a brand new account since once you are a seller, you cannot change your account on ebay. "

I am setting the popcorn down just to say that my selling was restricted in June of 2020 because I refused to change over to MP myself. (It was just the latest straw on this camel's back). To this date May 25 2021, on this account I can still search, watch, and  buy.

It would not make sense to require anyone to delete an existing account because their selling privileges are on hold.

The Ebay site was hacked ONCE in 2014 and due to Ebay's encryption of sensitive member information the hackers never accessed the sensitive information.

PP's site has never been hacked to my knowledge.

Re: Social security number wanted.

You have said a mouthful kraftique.. eBay has made MANY changes in the 20 years that I have been a member.. I can only think of ONE that made sense.. They can ask for my SS info when I reach my $ or number of sales limits.. Until then its goodby eBay.. Bottom line is that I trust PayPal and I do not trust eBay..

MP does NOT require your full SSN, you just need to give them the last 4 digits.

Speaking to other changes NOT MP, there have been lots and lots and lots of changes over the years that may not make sense to you but do to many others.  Then there are lots and lots and lots of changes that don't make sense to many people.  You are being over critical to think there is only one change that was good in 25 years.

The single most important change likely to Ebay that enabled ALL OF US to survive the years was allowing Electronic payments on the site.  The next biggest is likely allowing Mobile payments and mobile shopping.  But the list goes on and on from there.  Without many of these changes, Ebay would have not survived.  Shoppers today are not like the buyers of yesteryears.  Many just wish they were.

Re: Social security number wanted.

its not even about the money, its just creepy. All the time, companies have data breaches that cause our info to get released. Ive had mine taken from Target, Paypal, and Kaiser. So the less companies have THAT much of my info, the better, because then it means they cant lose it.

Re: Social security number wanted.

I've been a casual / infrequent Ebay seller for many years, so I was surprised to see that they are now requesting my SS# in order to continue posting on their auction site. I've always been told that the one thing you never give out (with few exceptions) is your SS#. With all the hacking these days, I am not at all comfortable giving out a number that could potentially cause future problems. While I will continue to be a casual / infrequent Ebay 'buyer' I will no longer be a seller. Perhaps I can understand this request if we're talking about sellers who make a great deal of money, but for those like myself who don't make very much money (I only make a few hundred dollars per year) it just isn't worth the risk.

They just need your last four digits of your SSN.

They need it for income tax reasons........not meaning you owe income tax, but any income over $600 in a yr has to be reported to the IRS...............
