I have been a Ebay member buyer/seller since 1999 untill recently my account was frozen because I refuse to give up my SSN. No one should have to give up there SSN.the reason is that you will be reported to the IRS so that you will have to pay more taxes because its earn income.most of us who rely on making a few dollars are tax those of us who are retire and living on fix social security income depend on flea markets and garage sales for extra cash it's going to get to a point if you stop to use a restroom you will be tax it's out of control . I will close my account with Ebay and sell where I'm not under pressure to keep them happy the more you sale on Ebay the better they look there employees get pay and there stocks go up.

Who did I insult? Surely not cash value

Not everyone. Only the sockpuppet cheerleaders who are likely ebay employees. I understand that there has been a mass exodus of sellers in the last few months. Nobody wants to give their SSN out over the web anymore, especially when it involves a foreign payment processor located in Amsterdam.

Precisely, and this is why I have permanently closed my seller account. I don't have receipts for anything I purchased between 1968 and 1998.

OK, I'll bite.....
why would you need receipts for anything between 1968 and 1998?

The need for receipts has NOTHING to do with Ebay requirements. Seems here that you want to blame Ebay for something the IRS may require of you. What possible purpose could that serve?
Ebay could care less if you have receipts or track your expenses in any way. That isn't an issue for them, that would be an issue between the seller and IRS.
So are you mad at Ebay because they are making it more difficult for you to avoid claiming income earned on the internet on your taxes? Are you aware that if you are ONLY selling used items from around your own home that you likely won't have an income tax impact if you read, learn and digest the rules that surround these types of sales.
So maybe, taking a step back, learning the actual rules that pertain to your concerns will offer you more useable information rather than assumptions will.

I was recently notified whether I was in Nigeria to access my account, really? Somebody in Nigeria tried to hack into my eBay account & called support to change the password to lock me out & takeover. eBay emailed me that I had a security problem if I was not the person in Nigeria, really?
It appears the countries known for cyber-attacks are now going for any/all type of personal confidential information & fingers for responsibility are being pointed in the wrong direction.

That is one of the OLDEST scams around. You may want to spend a little more time looking at that email as it is like not even from Ebay. You should forward it entirely to spoof@ebay.com

Oh, it came from eBay, verified. They need to focus on their network/server cyber attacks on confidential customer personal information instead of blaming their end-user USA subscribers of being in Nigeria, a little encryption could help (along with following PCI standards).

BTW: Reporting the potential spoof is nothing but a black-hole nobody takes serious. . . ...can you get me a copy of their completed PCI audit & compliance report?

I'm not sure what information those reports would give you, but if security measures of any site were to be public information would never increase or strengthen the security of such site? It would only serve to give hackers info they otherwise would not have.
Besides, you are a user of this site, not an owner and therefore unlikely such info would ever me handed over to you or any other user of the site.

I have also been a member of ebay since 1999 and think the transfer to the managed payment system was poorly done. I had a sale that I was trying to refund and it took 2 months to get them to refund the money even though I never got a cent of it. I refuse to give ebay my social security number and would rather end my relationship with them. For those of us who have been on this long, you have to admit that they've got remarkably downhill.
I spoke with an eBay representative and said I was fine with never selling on ebay again but I would like to continue purchasing. They said I'd have to create a brand new account since once you are a seller, you cannot change your account on ebay.
I guess this is goodbye ebay. I can only hope enough people feel the same way and they change their new policies.

I have a feeling there is a lot more to that story. Not quite as simply as you seem to make it above. Processing a refund in MP is extremely easy and would not take two months to process. So there would be more information that you didn't provide above.
If you never provided MP with your SSN, then your account wasn't completely set up in MP and that would have been a problem.
The opening of an account that is solely for purchasing sounds very logical since this year Ebay will be requiring all active sellers to be enrolled in MP. So your selling account has to be enrolled and an account that is just for purchasing would not need to me.

You sound like a shill but I'll play along. It actually is just that simple. The transaction was the first to take place after my account was switched to managed payments without my knowledge. I did not want managed payments and was unwilling to provide ebay with my SS# so I couldn't access the funds nor could I correspond with the buyer since ebay also cut off my communication with all of ebay until I updated my account. I called ebay many times and representatives continued to tell me that someone would follow up to help but no one ever did. I have not nor will I ever give ebay my social security number - verifying a bank account is perfectly acceptable for confirming identity - so I am fine with ending my relationship with ebay after 22 years if that's what I'd have to do to list with them in the future.

Why? Because I asked you some questions? Do you feel that way about anyone that asks you to explain something a little further?
MP sent out emails in advance of moving sellers into MP. I know many sellers apparently thought that ignoring those emails would somehow prevent them from moving into MP even though the emails told them differently. So your mistake was a common mistake.
MP isn't requiring our SSNs just because they want to. The US Anti Money Laundering law and the US Patriot's Act require them to get this information for verification purposes. I do however respect why some members don't want to share that information.
I wish you well in whatever you decide to do or where you go from here. Just try to remember, just because someone else may have a different view point than you do doesn't make them a "shill". But it does make them a person with a different view point.
