I have been a Ebay member buyer/seller since 1999 untill recently my account was frozen because I refuse to give up my SSN. No one should have to give up there SSN.the reason is that you will be reported to the IRS so that you will have to pay more taxes because its earn income.most of us who rely on making a few dollars are tax those of us who are retire and living on fix social security income depend on flea markets and garage sales for extra cash it's going to get to a point if you stop to use a restroom you will be tax it's out of control . I will close my account with Ebay and sell where I'm not under pressure to keep them happy the more you sale on Ebay the better they look there employees get pay and there stocks go up.

Trust me you gave it to them and any other third party financial processor you use to receive funds. Like any third party financial processor under the new federal law, and a lot of already existing state laws you will get a 1099 from PayPal as well. I am in Virginia and their thresholds were changed in October of 2020 to $600 and 0 transactions and I received 1099's from not only PayPal but Venmo and several other 3rd party financial processors I use to receive funds. The biggest problem is none of them distinguish between business and personal fund transfers. So members of my family received 1099's because I had transferred funds to them that exceeded the state thresholds.

@madisonjames wrote:I object to having another HACKABLE company holding my SS number, my name, my phone number, my address!! Don't tell me EBay is unhackable!!
Why this change? It doesn't benefit me. Is this some corporate spat between Ebay and Paypal? AND at my expense. Another site with everything a hacker needs to steal your identity?
What else will a hacker need to steal my identity? NOTHING MORE NEEDED TO STEAL MY IDENTITY!!!
PEOPLE, PROTEST!!
You mean liike the US government that uses out of date hardware, as well as out of date software?????
Been hacked a few times for sure the US government has...........

- 2013 Data breach
- Plus company like Paypal and this new eBay payment falls in a gray line they are not a bank so they don't fall under bank rules. This gives them the right to set their own rule without any oversight.
Ebay has reported to credit bureaus for a long time for those that do not pay their Ebay fees. This isn't new to MP.
Why can't you trust Ebay to protect your data? You are correct there was a breach / hacking of Ebay in 2014. But what you don't note is that ZERO encrypted information was lost to the hackers. Ebay's protection / security STOOD UP to the hackers. NO financial data was lost on ANY member's account. Info they were able to access you can get off the internet for the most part. Phone numbers, addresses, email addresses and names.
You are INCORRECT. Money transmitters which is what PayPal is, Ebay is and Adyen is ALL fall under the rules that govern banking systems. You are correct that PP nor Ebay are banks. But the money processor that Ebay is now using, Adyen, they are a bank and they are licensed as a bank in the USA. They ALL have FEDERAL laws in which they MUST comply with. One of which drives the need to have verified identities on all accounts is the Anti Money Laundering Laws of the USA, Federal ISR rules and the US Patriots Act. Those laws along with the banking rules are a must for money transmitters.
PP nor Ebay have ANY right to set their own rules in the face of the FEDERAL laws the MUST comply with.

I just sold a Bernina 475qe for HALF of what it was worth, then eBay charged fees for that, now because I made over $600, they want to send out a 1099?? I certainly made no profit on that!! I wanted to get rid of it because it didn't have the features I wanted on a Bernina and I just bought a Pfaff which, in my opinion, sews way better.

The 1099 is no different in some respects than your W-2 it simply shows gross income. From that you deduct COGS, shipping, FVF's, packing materials.......... to arrive at net income which is what you pay taxes on. Just like you take the deductions out of the gross income on your W-2 for insurance, SS, etc. to get to net income. If you didn't make any profit on the sale of the item it is in fact a loss which, under some circumstances, you can also deduct from your taxes.
