I understand why so many sellers are furious with the eBay system of punishing sellers who do their job of shipping on time only to be deemed DEFECTIVE because the item arrived ONE DAY after the estimated delivery date because the USPS could not handle the holiday shipping volume. This is the USPS not delivering.
WT....??????
How is this my fault????????????
What a hateful thing to do us!!!

Payouts? What payouts? I've been trying to find out what the GUARANTEE is.

I'm glad some buyers here realize that sellers are not the ones trying to make life difficult, but eBay itself is. I would love to have more understanding buyers like you!
I used to sell here, too, and I've got decades of national retail chan regional management experience.
I will say that as a buyer, every time eBay "enhances" my buying experience (translation: discovers another "revenue stream") it takes something away from it. I'm at the point to where I dread buying here except for my little collectibles niche.
I have a large parts shipment I am getting together- or trying to get together- for a Porsche customer in Hong Kong. All I needed by today is a lousy pair of H1 yellow fog lamp bulbs. After having them unexpectedly backorder on eBay's main competitor, I found that ALL these bulbs there are from China, so I came to eBay and paid a whopping $22 shipping on 3 $4.95 pair of bulbs each slightly larger than a postage stamp and the whole parcel weighing about 7 oz. ... ONLY BECAUSE there was this eBay GUARANTEE that it would be here by today in time for this package to ship.
I know it's not the seller's fault. They didn't make the GUARANTEE, eBay did... knowing full well that most buyers will blame the seller.
It's obviously nothing more than yet another ploy to entice people to buy while avoiding any financial consequences. I don't want my seller to wind up with a defect because eBay lied to me.
Is it any frikkin' wonder that buyers are peeved off?

Does the seller get a defect for this?

No; there’s just a % you have to meet to maintain program eligibility.

"Guaranteed delivery" is a myth. No seller can control delivery unless they drive the package to the buyer's house in person (and maybe not even then). You put it in the PO and hope for hte best but dont promise anything other than it is accurately described and actually shipped.

Based on post on the seller board today I have a question. If one signs up for guarantee delivery using the handling time option and the package arrives late, will this be reflected on the shipping metrics as late even if a proper acceptance scan was obtained?
Hi @fern*wood, that's a great question! As long as tracking shows an acceptance scan within your stated handling time then it will not be counted as a late delivery on your Seller Dashboard.
This was the answer I was just given by Brian T on the weekly chat. @b86fiero

I have had stuff held up by customs and received a defect.
Ebay just says does not qualify for removal.

Ebay of course on the feedback asks the buyer if it was delivered on time( or before a certain date they pick), not shipped on time.

I was at the Post Office for my daily shipping and they are not delivering on Sunday. I was behind a woman that had to decide to pay $112 for Express to make sure it would get there on Sat or $22 for Priority to get it there on Tues.

Thanks to all for replying.
I opted into the 1 day handling only of the guaranteed delivery program.
Here's the order info:
Buyer payment received at 7:38 PM on Dec 4.
USPS scanned first class package at 11:07 AM Dec 5. (1 day handling)
USPS tracking confirms package delivered Dec 11.
Buyer did not claim as late delivery.
My dashboard under late delivery shows just a red dot under the post office delivery position. Nothing under buyer.
Called eBay this morning and was told too bad - the defect stays.
What a load of ...................!!! Yepper, I am furious. I resent being labeled DEFECTIVE because the post office did not do their job of delivering according to eBay's estimates. How is this my fault?
I just opted out of guaranteed delivery and changed my shipping to economy 1 - 10 days. How are we supposed to protect our accounts? If you look at my feedback you will see almost every buyer mentions my fast shipping.
Hello @b86fiero, I wanted to step in and clarify that opting into the Handling Time Guaranteed Delivery program does not change the defect process. If tracking shows an acceptance scan within your handling time then a late shipping defect will not occur. I'd like to review this situation in more detail. I'll send you an email shortly, so keep an eye out for it.

And the super secret fine print can be found in their Fine Print Legalbabble department, which happens to be in the cellar, where the lights are out (and so are the stairs). Once you get there, they can be found in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet inside an unused lavatory that has a sign on the door saying "Beware of the Leopard."
Sorry, couldn't resist an opportunity to make a Hitchhiker's Guide quip. 😄

Which sellers are still unhappy, even though sellers are in total control of ALL SELLER METRICS?
I am.
And somehow I don't feel I am in "total control" of the USPS.
For the last 3 months I have had no problems with getting Acceptance/Received/In-the-Hands-of scans upon pick-up. I use a scan sheet even if I have only one package.
On Monday the sub/new/temp carrier on my route failed to properly scan my scan sheet.
The first scan 2 of my packages (one 1st class, one priority) received were at the main PO in my city between 1AM and 3:30AM. The. Next. Day.
So now I must depend on the USPS getting my packages into buyer hands very quickly to avoid "late shipment" dings. I'm very low volume, and even 2 dings could push me near the brink of losing my TRS+ status.
Could I have had "total control" on Monday by standing in line at my branch PO for 30-45 minutes to hand my packages to a counter clerk (dropped off packages at my branch are not scanned until they reach the main PO). Yes, I suppose so. Is that a definition of "total control"--spending 20-40 minutes in line every time I need to mail a package?
You are accountable to ebay. You gave up the total control you did possess when you chose to reject your option to stand in line to get the one thing that gives you a silver bullet no matter anything else that happens. That is on you, not on ebay or USPS.
Your reaction does not change the fact that all seller metrics are within the total control of the seller.
