Account opened today, zero feedback, bit on item, what is the scam?

I listed a makeup item, I had a person who just opened the account today send an offer for the amount of the starting bid.  I countered and they accepted and paid right away.  I've had this happen before, always brand new accounts ( opened the day they bid)with zero feedback.   What is the scam?  I cancelled the listing because I don't trust it.

You made a sale last night to a brand new eBay buyer? Shouldn't you be worried about their reliability?

In the current climate, as you are well aware, shouldn't we be encouraging the new kids on the block?

Don't we want their experience here to be a good one?

Sorry, not sure I understand what you mean.   I get lots of first time eBay buyers because eBay aggressively promotes my listings on Google and elsewhere.   I do not worry about new buyer reliability.

The only buyers I worry about are those with no manners or self-awareness who message me demanding a discount.

They go straight to my best buddies list.

eBay seller since 1999. This is a posting ID.

I would have hesitation selling something to someone who bit my item.

@randi66

My first purchase on eBay was about $150. I had to mail a paper check.

Glad the seller didn't cancel the auction when he saw I had zero FB.

Re: Account opened today, zero feedback, bit on item, what is the scam?

I am a small, very small scale seller on ebay, as compared to most sellers here. I will meet at least 1 or 2 people every week during my regular service job that tell me they absolutely do not purchase on ebay and when asked why,  they tell me it's because of trust.  Not because they personally have had a bad experience with ebay but because someone they know has had a bad experience. Can you imagine going on Amazon and having such a horrible experience that almost every person you know will now never shop on Amazon again? Seems ludicrous doesn't it? Well believe it or not that is exactly what is going to happen to all the rest of us sellers all the way to the top of eBay. It's going to affect our bottom line even though it will be unnoticeable it will have it's effect. Nobody thinks outside of their own sphere when making haste decisions.  Imagine if that buyer has 10 close friends,  and they each have 6 close friends, so on and so on and so on it goes from 1 haste decision without thought.  It blows my mind when I hear someone say they will never shop on ebay, whether or not they were the one that had the bad experience. Please don't think your actions while buying or selling in ebay only has repercussions for yourself because even though it may seem on the surface to have no affect to anyone else, you need to look a little bit deeper before pulling the trigger. Come here and ask questions first, gain some insight.  There are tens of thousands of pro, master, professors' of sales that will be more than happy to help you in making the correct decision,  but it's up to you to come here first.

Exactly... what is the scam? If you don't know of one, why do you think one exists here?

None of the buyer actions you stated in your OP indicate any scam is taking place. Stop looking for something that isn't there.

The buyer saw you item and wanted to buy it.

The buyer signed up on ebay just so he/she can buy your item.

THAT'S the scam!

They probably found your item on Google and came to eBay to buy it -- something we all hope and pray for.  They may never return.  ☹️

I understand you not returning to post on your thread, since it might be embarrassing based on the responses.  I do hope, though, that you have read them and understand the responses are trying to help you and other newish sellers that may read this with similar questions.

I was just about to purchase some of those delicious candies you sell. Are they for display only?

Honestly, I don't think they're all that.

I just think people buy them for the "Hawaii" factor.

Your scam theory is absurd.   If you don't want to sell to buyers get off ebay and sell through craigslist where you can meet the customer in person.   You are hurting all ebay sellers with your shenanigans.  We need more new buyers not less.

I dig the pineapple flavour. The only pineapple stuff I find in Canada is hi-chew.

You started out  with zero feedback. Where would you be today if all your sellers canceled  zero feedback buyers?
