Account opened today, zero feedback, bit on item, what is the scam?

I listed a makeup item, I had a person who just opened the account today send an offer for the amount of the starting bid.  I countered and they accepted and paid right away.  I've had this happen before, always brand new accounts ( opened the day they bid)with zero feedback.   What is the scam?  I cancelled the listing because I don't trust it.

I wouldn't have done that.

"cancel the listing"..."paid"...and I believe you still get charged an eBay fee of the highest bid on the cancel auction.

There are safeguards to mailing an item out.

@randi66

What was your scam the day you signed up?

     Everyone starts out at 0 buyers and sellers. What reason did you use to cancel the order? I very much doubt a scammer is going to target a $10 item. Do not be surprised if they leave you negative feedback or report you to eBay but being a new buyer they may not be aware of those options.

Scammers usually target "high value item" like cellphones, computers, gold & diamond jewelry (anything they can easily resell).

Brand new accounts with no feedback are usually people shopping under a guest account.  They can't leave feedback and the return process is unconventional.  I love these customers.

Are you talking about the $9 item you relisted?

Scammers want something they can make money off of, not a $9 makeup kit.

Have a great day.

It was probably a buyer using a guest account. Those accounts always begin the day they are created. I have plenty of buyers who use guest account or just signed up the day of purchase without any issues. Quite a few are even repeat buyers.

Too bad you had the knee jerk reaction of cancelling you may have just lost a repeat customer. I hope you used the correct reason to cancel by selecting out of stock because anything else would be false.

Your penalty for cancelling a completed auction with a bidder are non refundable final value fees.

Why on earth would you think it was a scam???

Hi @randi66

You are listing a low-scam item at a low-scam price in a low-fraud category.

There likely is no scam. It is more likely the new buyer’s actions reflect that they may be unsure how to navigate the site.

I see you have put a disclaimer in your listing stating you will not do business with zero feedback buyers.

There is nothing nefarious about zero or low feedback shoppers. It is not an indication of criminal intent or a red flag. A buyer’s  legitimacy cannot be obtained through a feedback score. More information is needed.

We all accept that selling online has risk. It can be mitigated but not avoided. But making business decisions based primarily in fear can limit one’s sales and destroy goodwill with an entire subset of eBay shoppers.

We need new buyers on the platform. They should be welcomed not held up as suspicious. I prefer to withhold judgement until such time a buyer reveals she/he is untrustworthy. Until then, my buyers deserve the benefit of the doubt. This choice is based on my 15 years of eBay selling. Have never been defrauded by a buyer.

Refusing to sell to zero feedback buyers is akin to shooting oneself in the foot. eBay’s structure and corporate culture is set up to protect buyers’ interests. This makes it difficult, if not impossible, to manage risk after the sale. Ideally, one should determine their risk tolerance prior to listing.

BTW, your listing states the cosmetic is new. Since there are multiple finger marks in many of the eyeshadow palettes, the product can hardly be categorized as New In Box. As you are likely aware, used cosmetics cannot be sold on eBay.

It is not a flattering image to choose to list a questionable cosmetic, all the while pointing fingers and crying “Scam!”

I made a sale last night to a brand new eBay buyer.

She found my listing on Google and even messaged me to tell me how happy she was to have found an item that was not available anywhere else online.

eBay seller since 1999. This is a posting ID.

There are people who open accounts for a specific purpose, holiday etc.  They are not scammers.

"What is the scam?" Good question.  There is no evidence here whatsoever of a scam.

What did you use as your reason for cancellation? You have exposed yourself to a potential defect for no reason at all.

In your almost 26 years here, is this the very first new buyer you have ever encountered?

I am a long time eBay user with many years of experience.  I have had many new account zero feedback sales. All have been great buyers without issues. I am guessing they were unregistered buyers browsing eBay and finding something they wanted to purchase... your cancelled buyers will probably have their own stories to tell on why they won't purchase on eBay... 🙄

@randi66

Not smart.  If they paid you, you ship.  One too many of those cancellations and eBay will restrict your account.  Some people register as guests, so 0 feedback is common.  Not everyone is a scammer & we all have to start somewhere.  Again,  don't keep up this type of selling behavior or you can eventually be shut down.

Happy Selling
