what shipping service did you use? UPS/Fedex/USPS?

I think only the carrier can help you.
Only they would know why there was postage due.

This sounds like a Fed Ex delivery?
there have been many complaints about this
Not sure of the remedy

When you go to pay to get the package back, you'll just have to ask them.

On the OP's listing I'm seeing USPS rates for a 35 pound (or dimensional equivalent) package.
On the River the same item has these specs:
Package DimensionsItem Weight
| 25 x 25 x 14.5 inches |
| 9 pounds |
Making assumptions based on that limited info, it looks like the shipping on the listing is in the right ballpark. OP will need to contact USPS to ask what happened.

Here's my guess: Since eBay is phasing out access to postage labels for Parcel Select, the eBay shipping label defaulted to sell them a flat rate envelope and they didn't notice the substitution. The seller should check their label purchase record. If they accidentally shipped with a label for a FRE, it might not be too late to send the buyer the Postage Due so they can pick up the package.

Another tidbit to consider is that if the online postage was underpaid, the charge for the Postage Due will probably show up on the sender's eBay account in another week or two. If it was a Priority Mail label that was underpaid, then paying the postage due for the original full cost of Priority shipping (either through the automated system or at the PO) should also cover the return since Priority Mail includes return shipping for refused or undeliverable packages.

Maybe they lied. You can find out by inputting the size, weight on the shipping website you used.
Also, be careful using eBay's calculated shipping. It's waaaayyyy off lots of times.

I've never had a problem with eBay's calculated shipping (though I only ship with USPS, which is apparently what the OP used). Most of the problems that show up here turn out to be user error. And this thread is about a problem with the label, not with what the listing charged.

If this were the case, that the wrong label was used for package type, then the buyer should not have been charged postage due. It should have been caught by the APV. As far as I know and can find on the USPS website, local postal employees are not supposed to be charging manual postage due for these types of errors that should be accounted for by the APV.
roygroom definitely needs to check with his post office (if he did indeed mail through USPS) to find out why the buyer was hit with postage due.

The only error that should have been caught by the local PO but not by the APV system is if the CD player got shipped as Media Mail.

Is it also possible that one of the dimensions was slightly off -- e.g. the seller rounded 26 1/2" down to 26" or so -- and that extra inch put the package into oversize or balloon territory if the Post Office decided to confirm measurements?
