Totally ripped off by Ebay's practices

I can't believe Ebay has come to this. I guy a simple item that could be mailed in a small package. But the seller sends it through "the global shipping program." So you really have no idea when it will arrive until you get an email, in my case from Intelcom that "Your package is out for delivery and will be there in the next three hours"

Well, I was just going out and would be gone all day. Assuming they would know I was not home and would make another delivery attempt or leave a notice of where I could pick up the package, I didn't worry about it.

I get home to an email that says, "Your package was delivered!" with a picture "proving" it, which was a shot of the outside of my apartment building. Yes I live in an apartment building, and there is no lobby. If you can't get past the front door (and you can't) then you don't get in, period. So they left the package outside my building, where anyone could see it, and steal it, which apparently they did.

So I contact Intelcom, or TRY to through the emails and website. And there is NO phone number, NO way of contacting them. So I fill out their "Didn't get my package" form, and chose specifically "My package was stolen." All I get is, "Your package shows as delivered. If there are any problems, contact the merchant."

Oh but wait, there IS no way to contact the merchant. I remember when you COULD. You could send them a direct message, they would GET the message and you could communicate. NO MORE apparently. I try to send the seller a message but to do that, it's another form. So I fill it out, "Didn't get my package" field. I get an email saying "A case has been opened." About 15 minutes later, I get another email, "Case is closed because it shows your package was delivered."

So I "appealed" the case, and explained for the second time, all details and sent that in. It's the next day now and I have heard nothing.

Okay maybe if I go back to the original item, (still being sold, they have more than one) to ask a question, I could contact the seller. Nope, Ebay once again preventing this. I fill out THAT form, and when I hit submit, Ebay informs me that "All messages are scanned for content, and if Ebay deems the question inappropriate, the message will not be delivered."

So I figure ONE way to get the seller's attention is to leave negative feedback. I don't WANT to do this. The seller has 3000 items and 100% positive feedback. And I'm sure if I could CONTACT the seller, they might step in and do something or try to help. So I leave negative feedback, with another explanation of what is happening. It's the next day after THAT, and the seller's feedback is 100% and my feedback nowhere to be found.

So, it's literally impossible to inform the seller of what has happened. Ebay is no help at all. The shipping company is no help at all.

It is definitely NOT acceptable to leave a package outside an apartment building where anyone can steal it. If you can't deliver it to me, then WAIT. Or, I have a novel idea, why not just MAIL it and it would come directly to my mailbox and NOT be stolen, would cost $5.00 instead of the nearly $14.00 it cost to use the "Global Shipping Program."

I am astounded at the uselessness of Ebay's procedures and doubt I will be ever using it again.

Why aren’t you blaming the DRIVER who you say decided to leave the package outside your building?

The driver does not work for eBay.   Why are you blaming eBay?

Hi @pwuppywwuppy

Buyers have the choice to bypass listings that use the Global Shipping Program for international shipping.  Not all sellers use it.

Buyers are responsible for having a safe place for item delivery.  Sellers are NOT responsible for items stolen after delivery.  This is not unique to either eBay OR the GSP.

I’m very sorry your package was stolen … but that’s not eBay’s fault.  It could just as easily been a package sent through another selling venue.

I HAVE a safe place for delivery: my apartment! My shipping details include my address AND MY APARTMENT number. I got a package from Amazon, and I was also not home. They used the same shipping company, Intelcom. I was not home, so they left a notice, "You can pick up your package at this location." So I did. This time apparently the driver, "deemed it was a safe location." Well it's not a safe location and that should be obvious to anyone. I even have the shot of the outside of my building to "prove" it was literally outside an apartment building. My shipping details include my UNIT number. It was NOT delivered there and careless left where anyone could steal it. This is NOT my fault, NOT my problem yet no one wants to take responsibility. You would think the global shipping program would have insurance for this or that anyone from the shipping company to Ebay to the seller could work with me. But nope. Impossible. Absolutely unacceptable.

The feedback would have qualifed for removal for a couple reasons right off the bat.  Sounds like you opened a case and it was closed on the sellers favor that is an automatic removal of negative Fed.  Also since it was global shipping the seller would be eligible negative feedback removed that has anything to have any issue with shipping at the international part of the journey.

I also live in an apartment building in San Francisco. But I am friendly with all the neighbors in our building. We all look out for each others packages. I have a few neighbors who text me if I am home and can I get their package for them when its delivered. Get to know someone in your building. Tenants in my building look out for each other. I had a wine party a few weeks ago and had an extra bottle of wine I didn't want and just texted the neighbor I left a bottle of wine at their door. Its not any shippers fault. Leaving negative feedback due to someone taking your package is not the way to go. And if you leave something nasty in the negative feedback eBay will remove it or the seller can have it removed.

Insurance for pkgs stolen after they have been delivered? And expect a seller to 'work with you' after your pkg has been delivered, then stolen? Thats not going to happen. And as suggested, just avoid those sellers who use the GSP, certainly easy enough to do.

Your complaint is with the shipping company and driver who chose to leave the package outside your apartment building.

It continues to astound me the number of buyers who think sellers have control of what the shipping company does with packages once sellers have handed them off. I can control how well stuff is packaged, how well I describe it, how well I label it, but I can't control the shipper choosing to leave it not in a secure location. The poster who said no shipper is going to insure against theft after delivery is 100% correct. There are plenty of dishonest people who would claim porch theft for a freebie item if such a policy existed.

There is no doubt that you were wronged.  It's terrible that this happened to you.  Taking things that don't belong to you is theft, and it is bad.

However, I think some of your assumptions are unreasonable, such as "Assuming they would know I was not home . . . ."  Or assuming it may be obvious to anyone what may or may not be a safe location to leave a package.

What's confusing in this subsequent post from the OP is, he/says the delivery service "left a notice, 'You can pick up your package at this location.'  So I did."  But it sounds like you did NOT go to whatever location that notice indicated because, after all, you did not receive your delivery.

I am not familiar with a shipping company called Intelcom.  Perhaps their drivers have very strict delivery rules, and they face reprimands of some sort if they do not deliver every package every day, within strict time limits.

I think most of us have experienced a theft of our own personal property, even if it was just somebody taking our lunch from the office refrigerator.   It is very bad and we all should have been taught this in our homes, places of worship, and elementary school.  I was taught that.   And when my house was broken into  in the early 1980s and my television stolen, I had to go out and buy another one -- it was a Thursday, and I needed to see Hill Street Blues.   There was nobody to blame except the thieves, who were never caught.

Unless you can absolutely prove who stole the package, you have to accept it and learn from it.

My understanding with this was that it was a different occasion with the same shipping company.  They picked up the package no problem.   It was a Amazon package. The op seems to think since the Amazon package with the same company was fine this is somehow eBays fault.  For me it just shows further Fault with the specific delivery person and not eBay or global shipping.

I am quite sure they were giving an example of how a previous delivery was handled when they were not home.

The delivery service made a decision it was safe to leave item unattended.  Since it turned out not to be a safe way to leave item then I would think it is their responsibility.

Your beef should be with Intelcom. That particular delivery driver pulled a bonehead if the package was left outside the building on the street.

In the 2nd address line in shipping forms, you could write:

Don't Leave Package Outside Building

Or something like that.

You have to handle this on your end, someway.

"why not just MAIL it and it would come directly to my mailbox and NOT be stolen, would cost $5.00 instead of the nearly $14.00 it cost to use the "Global Shipping Program."

In what alternative universe does it cost only $5.00 to ship "a small package" to another country?

Because I TRIED to blame the driver. I phoned the company and I filled out their online thing, Intelcom, and they told me, "We're sorry about this. Please contact the merchant." It was SOMEONE other than me that decided to use a lousy service was unable to safely deliver this package. You would think Intelcom would refund me but they just refer me back to Ebay. This entire experience is why I will never use Ebay again. Doesn't have to be a shipping issue. Could be any issue, and they have proven to me that they assume no responsibility when they should. I read a recent article showing Ebay's customers have shrunk 13% over the last year. Gee, I wonder why.
