This was my first transaction on ebay. The price was advertised. I paid the asked price. I received a confirmation of my purchase from ebay. I was given a date of delivery. Is there something I missed in the buying motion on ebay? any help will be appreciated.

Late deliveries happen.
One day after the latest estimated delivery date provided by eBay when you purchased, you can go into your purchase history and file Item Not Received.
Find the item, click on More Actions and go from there.
You can also check the carrier tracking and if it is moving towards your location, just wait until it arrives.

It's very possible that the item is still moving in transit. Postal delays have been numerous of late. If tracking shows it's still moving, I wouldn't worry yet. If it doesn't show up and it's not being tracked, do as lakefor94 says.

A significant amount of mail is being delayed right now, due to huge rainstorms in some parts of the country, while other parts of the USA are being buried beneath piles of snow.
From where was your item being shipped?
What does your tracking statement say?

Aside from the delays mentioned in other postings - "it was due here" is probably not what the notice said. "Estimated delivery date" was more probably the text. ESTIMATED being the operative word.
Once we turn a package over to the post office what happens next is beyond our control. Even the post office itself does not guarantee a delivery date on ordinary mail.

Good points. And if your delivery happens to go thru the Houston area, USPS has been having severe delays for weeks on end.

You were given an estimated date of delivery.

If your item is beyond the estimated delivery date, give it a few more days and then prepare to file an item not received claim under the Money Back Guarantee.
You only have thirty days past the last day of the estimated delivery date to file.
As others have stated, there have been severe shipping delays by all carriers due to winter weather, reconfiguration, and other causes, so if you can be patient, let a few extra days pass before filing.

I'm at the point where I pray any sale isn't going to Texas.

Yes, and it was apparently the 31st of January, as mentioned by the OP.
