Interacting with spammers on community

Hi everyone! I wanted to share a tip that'll help keep our Community clean. When encountering spammers on Community, please refrain from interacting with spam posts as this encourages the spammer to keep posting. Replying to spam posts, encourages the spammer, and keeps the offensive material at the top of the Community forum list. By not replying, it has the chance to sink down the forum list. Let's not 'feed the troll' who's looking for a reaction from Community.

We ask that you please report this behavior to the moderators by clicking the options menu  then report inappropriate content. Our Moderators will remove the content as soon as possible.

Hi spam is usualy some one advertising an item for sale:

Some of the other problems that happen are folks saying they need to find a seller;

a high risk situation.

Is that considered spam???

I'm not sure the Community Team member is talking about the same thing when referring to "spam."

nicole@ebay If you could please explain what you are categorizing as 'spam' posts would be very helpful. Some consider a spam post to be something that others do not consider as spam. This way we'll all be on the same page....

Can you give us a clear definition of "spam" as applied to eBay?  Not sure we are all on the same page with this.

For instance, we have the Sri Lankan sellers who post inane remarks or silly questions.  Is that considered spam? Some of us have decided that these folks are under the delusion that the more they post, the better their eBay rep will be.

Not speaking for nicole@ebay, but "spam" is unwanted advertising by spambots or humans receiving some kind of compensation to post--not threads or posts that one might find annoying. If those were considered spam, half the threads and posts that show up every day would qualify.

Such is were some one is trying to get a response from the boards or an individual. Usually involved in control issues between users.

"Baiting" used to be listed as a violation of the Community Guidelines and could be reported as such to the moderation team for their adjudication. It isn't anymore. I'm not sure what that signifies.

Terminology changes over time; More so: with say a moderator and the training they have.

Opinions of some infractions would be to the individual reviewing such.

Moderation is not an easy job. Get to see some crazy stuff doing such.

Not an easy job being a mod.

Key wording in the original topic seems to be this:

"Let's not 'feed the troll' who's looking for a reaction from Community."

Hence the need for clarification of what this topic really is about being needed.

I did not come to such a conclusion:  and this is one of the problems with the boards.

I meant no criticize of you or what you stated....

So I see I should have worded this differently:

Baiting can be such that the mods have to say it is or is not:

I can see why such for an individual can be difficult to say yes or no.

Having been a admin on a large board I know such can be confusing and problematic.

Hence the its getting a bit heated  warnings at times that are done.

Hope this clarify what I meant before.
