fees

I have been a seller on eBay for over 20 years and I am stating today that I will never use eBay again.

I guess I am a bit out of date because my last sale was about 2 years ago, when things were different.

My current sale of a Nikon camera had fees of 15%. Part of the fees were because my client was in another country, Viet Nam.  Now, I did not know this when I accepted his offer but learned later when the fee was deducted from my sale price.  Totally unfair.  Further 12.5% in my opinion is outrageous and I was not aware the selling fee was that high when I listed. It should be stated when listing so the seller can choose to accept it or not.

So, a new adage, let the seller beware if on eBay.

Finally, I was not aware that they no longer used PayPal which gave instant payment.  Now I must wait 5 days for my money.  There are better ways to sell things.

Sorry eBay, a loyal customer is now gone.  Plus, I intend to tell everyone I know about my experience.

There are always changes to the platform, especially on the seller side. It would be a best practice for all sellers to refresh themselves on the seller policies after being away from the platform. That way, you're not surprised by current fees, approved payment methods, or other.

Best of luck.

It's true that returning sellers are treated as new sellers. It's too bad that you weren't up on current policy, also. Bummer.

12.5% is outrageous? For years, you paid 10% to eBay and 2.9% to PayPal, and that wasn’t a problem. Now you pay 12.9% to eBay, and 0.0% to PayPal (plus currency fees), and it’s causing you to leave.

Explain the logic in that. Take your time. Think it through.

Since you haven't sold in awhile, it'll be a longer then 5 days.

You'll be treated as a new seller and they might hold the funds for 30 days, before they release them.

EBay used to own Paypal and found it a nice little earner.

Paypal also charges international fees, it's just not very transparent.

EBay was forced to sell off PP and was paying out for payment processing.

EBay devised Managed Payments which brings payment processing back inside.

The status quo ante 2015.

The good thing about MP, I hope, will be that it is harder to get an account. PP was weak on identification and susceptible to small-scale account hijacking. (Nothing big, it was still very very safe to use.)

The bad thing about MP is that we cannot build up funds to pay occasional fees (like Store subscriptions and some shipping fees) or to buy with.

If you are a casual seller, your current fees under Managed Payments should have been 12.55% of the total payment (eBay) plus 1.65% (eBay international fee).

Your fees two years ago under eBay and PayPal would have been 10% of the total payment (eBay), plus 2.9% of the total payment (PayPal), plus 1.5% of the total (PayPal international fee).

So on a $100 international transaction, your fees now are $12.55 + $1.65 = $14.20

Two years ago on that same transaction they would have been $10 + $2.90 + $1.50 = $14.40

Live auction houses charge a 30% commission.  eBay is cheap comparatively. If you want cheaper there is Craigslist or the local print classifieds.

Wish you the best.  Typical holds once you get MP set up are 14-21 days.

You will find other sites have also changed quite a bit.

If you have been gone a while......best to not assume things are still the same.  All the best!

"So, a new adage, let the seller beware if on eBay".

If you have been a seller on eBay for over 20 years, you should already know this.  There are and have been seller updates twice a year, minimum...as well as other important announcements in between.  Keeping up with the changes is necessary to avoid the supposed unfairness you are feeling.

I respect that you are upset and I get why you are upset.  But how is this Ebay’s fault?  You were away from selling for a couple of years, did you really think Ebay wasn’t going to change anything while you were gone?  Did you read the announcement emails or the update emails that Ebay sends to all sellers?

I’m unsure of your concern about your current sale with an international fee of 1.65%.  This is NOT a new fee.  The only thing new is Ebay is charging you the fee instead of PayPal.

Even if we were still using PayPal for our money processor, you would have paid this international fee.  This fee has been in existence since PP started.  Because you were obviously unaware of it does not make it a new change or something that wasn’t he rule before.  It only means you were unaware of it.

It appears to me that you are mad at Ebay when Ebay did nothing wrong.  It all boils down to you not being informed on the changes and that is on you, not Ebay.  You are supposed to stay current as a seller.

Seems a "loyal customer" would have been checking in from time to time to see what is happening on the site.
