fees

I have been a seller on eBay for over 20 years and I am stating today that I will never use eBay again.

I guess I am a bit out of date because my last sale was about 2 years ago, when things were different.

My current sale of a Nikon camera had fees of 15%. Part of the fees were because my client was in another country, Viet Nam.  Now, I did not know this when I accepted his offer but learned later when the fee was deducted from my sale price.  Totally unfair.  Further 12.5% in my opinion is outrageous and I was not aware the selling fee was that high when I listed. It should be stated when listing so the seller can choose to accept it or not.

So, a new adage, let the seller beware if on eBay.

Finally, I was not aware that they no longer used PayPal which gave instant payment.  Now I must wait 5 days for my money.  There are better ways to sell things.

Sorry eBay, a loyal customer is now gone.  Plus, I intend to tell everyone I know about my experience.

That is fine, I never said you were.  I simply responded to a post you posted.  Nothing more.  It is what we do on threads.  I'm sorry it caused you concern.

Let’s review: I explained to the OP that the fees he now thinks are outrageous are the same as he used to pay. You called me out with:

@trixnot_81

Why is 12.5% "outrageous"?  Did you forget you no longer pay PayPal for their money processing fee?  Did you do the math at all.”

So yes, you asserted that I had claimed the fees were outrageous, which I clearly did not, and then condescendingly asked if I had done the math, even though I had shown the OP that total fees were about the same.

No, that’s not “what we do on threads”. We don’t misrepresent what other people have said. Do you not understand that I’m not the person who said the fees are outrageous? Can you not read that my post accurately stated the PayPal fees both before MP (2.9%) and after MP (0.0%)? This wasn’t just a click on the wrong button; you addressed me directly.

it is YOUR responsibility to check for changes, updates, etc, etc, etc BEFORE listing on eBay or any other site for that matter...

telling others about YOUR experience is meaningless...not everyone is of like-mind.

Folks are free to choose where they list their items ...sellers will find that other selling sites have also changed, increased fees,etc.etc.etc...

Sorry but the shortfall in your expectations and/or lack of knowledge about changes on this site is on you...

You can't then or now unless you look at the buyer's FB page.  Just like the fee is not new now or then.  This fee has always been around, just now Ebay collects it instead of PP.

Yes, but there was the option on PP to block foreign payment sources. Since it's tied to the registered account address now, we've lost that option.

For me no biggie, I sell to international buyers, but there are lots who want nothing to do with international buyers at all.

I did NOT "call you out" on anything.  Neither my post or even most posts are confrontational as you seem to want to make them.  It is a CONVERSATION between ADULTS.  You are making more out of it than was intended, implied or said.  There is simply no need for that.

Nor was I "condescending".  You read things in a post that simply are not there.  IDK why you are doing that.  I was conducting a civil conversation.  You seem to want to portray it as anything but that for some reason.

I did not 'misrepresent' what you said in your post.  Your post appeared in my post EXACTLY how you posted it.  You seem to be working hard to make this into something it does not need to be.

Enough already.  You are making something seem like something it is not.

Yes they absolutely did.  It was acknowledged earlier in the thread.  But it was an unnecessary block for US sellers creating and posting their listings on the US site.  Ebay ONLY allows a buyer to pay in the currency of the site they are purchasing on.  So the US site only accepts US dollars.  International buyers can not pay you in anything other than US $$s.

Anytime you have a sale with a buyer with an account set up in another country you have been charged the international fee, whether or not you noticed it before is a separate issue.  In PayPal it was 1.50% when I left PP, it could be higher now.  In MP it is 1.65%.

So we are talking about TWO DIFFERENT things here and that is why people are getting confused.

There is a Conversion Fee of somewhere around 4% that both MP and PP have.  But this is when you receive payment in a currency other than US.  But if you are listing on the US site, Ebay ONLY allows you to be paid in US funds, so this fee should never apply.

The international fee is charged if your buyer is registered in a different country.  That fee is 1.65% in MP and 1.50% or more in Paypal.  It does not matter if your buyer has you ship to a US address.  The simple fact they are registered in another country will cause the fee to apply.

This post represents a continuing failure of eBay to engage in positive seller communications. How hard would it be when this seller went to sell some thing for the first time to have a pop up or something that says"

Welcome back! We see it's a been a while since you've sold something. We wanted to make sure you knew there were a few changes since you last sold., including all fee changes (link), all payments are now made through eBay's managed payments (link).  Buyers can still pay with PayPall but sellers will get payments through the new system. We encourage you to take the time to learn about these so their are no surprises.

We are always happy when a seller like you comes back to share their great merchandise with eBayers.

My fees have been averaging 28% since eBay took over managed payments — the calculations are so complicated I just take whatever they deposit in my account divided by the sale price.  For example, I sold something for $24 and ended up earning $17.45 from eBay (plus I lost $1.64 on the shipping because I charge a flat fee); so technically I made $15.81 on a $24 sale (35%). I’m just reselling my stuff, and these high eBay fees have made it so it’s not worth my time and effort.

You need to do the math before/while you list your item.

You should use calculated shipping or use the Shipping Calculator | eBay to determine what the highest shipping will cost you and use that number for your flat fee or free shipping.

Also, eBay's ONE FEE includes their transaction cost and Commission that is charged on the whole transaction - so you will be paying a commission on TAX and SHIPPING as well as your item. You need to estimate that number to determine pricing. Otherwise, all your "Profit" will go to eBay and you will end up with nothing.

@dusabwl

If you are paying 28% Fees to ebay you either have some fuzzy math or some glaring listing problems.

If my calculations are correct, the last item you sold for ($24.00) would have had about 4.83 in total eBay Fees.

I’m math challenged, and seriously want to understand how you calculate eBay fees.  The item sold for $24 and I received $17.45. I calculate that as 27.3% for fees.

I didn’t include tax or shipping, so I’m probably doing the math wrong. Any help is appreciated!

I guess that’s my point. If an item sells for $24 and I end up with $17.45 all in, it’s not working for me. I can raise my prices, but I want to sell my stuff!

Sorry it took so long...I was looking for a 24.00 sale...best I could find was a sale for $25.00 with 7.74 Shipping (I am in a 14.9% category so it's 2% higher than most categories)

Total   -   $32.74

eBay Fees - $4.76

Total Payout - $27.78

I paid the shipping out of the payout and pocketed the rest
