Has anyone been experiencing just how much eBay continues to ratchet up their filters? I recently sold an item and the buyer needed 3-4 weeks to pay in 3 payments via Paypal. I had him buy the item and then simply did not mark it paid because I knew I would receive a bad-boy mark against me if not shipped within 48 hrs. So it sat there as sold with the commission taken out for 3 weeks as the buyer made 2 payments. 2 days before he messaged me to send him a PP invoice for the last payment on an $800 item I get a 7-day account suspension for doing biz off eBay! I called and explained and even offered the proof via messages and Paypal and who would have figured, no one with common sense at eBay. Anyway, I sent the inv 2 days later, he paid, I marked paid, sent the item just as planned. I've been with eBay since they started and have done a million $ in transactions and still get treated like this even with 5-star ratings. Just my laundry for today. and please, a 7-day suspension - am I in grade school? What other company in the business world operates this way. Off eBay e-commerce site just about completed, thank goodness.

If I have a customer who needs time to pay, I put my shipping date out as far as I can. That way they can save up the full payment. Working with customers is good business policy and sales. I can't believe that a company like eBay doesn't know that. They want the payments kept within eBay. This accomplishes it for the buyer, the seller and eBay.
We are all in the business of sales after all.

The shipping date doesn't go into effect until the buyer pays, so if they don't pay for a week, the clock doesn't start ticking until you receive the payment. I've had buyers ask if they could buy something and then pay for it in several days when they received their paycheck, which was just fine and caused zero problems on my end or theirs.

I'm confused Castle. I'm doing all I can to make money for my business and for eBay. This is where I sell.
Isn't this the point? If all these sales are kept in eBay, and the money goes into my account, what is the problem for them or for me? I'm not talking about multiple payments, I'm just talking about giving them a few weeks to pay.

Hi @oldwestgold, payment through PayPal invoices is considered a violation of our Off eBay Sales policies - while I understand that you were providing your customer with more time to pay, our expectation is that payment is made through eBay checkout. With the scenario you have described, the buyer would not qualify for protection through our eBay Money Back Guarantee and this is a component of why we take a firm stance on this initiative. You can review additional details of this policy here.

Castle doesn't make the policies, she's just quoting them. The policy is what it is. You can choose to violate it but I doubt anyone who willingly and knowingly does will get much sympathy when ebay restricts them.

I think that the customer can make up their own mind if they want the money back guarantee or not. They are still protected via PayPal anyway. Either way, in this case, eBay got it's money, the customer got what they wanted and the seller was paid. No harm at all done to eBay, but incredible harm done to the seller.
Has everyone forgotten what customer service means?

ann - policies here are in place and we have to abide by them - that's just the way it is. We may not agree but these are put in place to protect both the buyer and the seller. I have no problem waiting if a buyer needs a few days to pay for an item - I take off the auto UPI - but this marketplace does not accept piecemeal payments.
It would be too hard for Ebay to control layaways on this venue. A buyer starts making payments and then sees they can buy it cheaper elsewhere - they want their money back. The seller doesn't want to give all the money back because they now have been holding onto the item for weeks , which may have sold to someone else during that time. Between refunding money - having to get fees back - it's too much hassle. This is not about customer service but what is feasibly possible while still insuring protection for both parties and a definite sale for the seller and Ebay.
If other venues are set up and willing to take layaway like a vintage venue we use - that's fine - you would be within your right to offer layaway but that is not how it's done here. Ebay is way too involved now - I don't want to see a rent to own or layaway plan administered by Ebay - there are enough problems.
