When Will Ebay Stop Holding Funds Until Delivery (Long Time Seller With No Issues)

I've sold over 1300 items over 20 years on Ebay and never once got a negative feedback or any sort of dispute.  In the past few years I only sporadically sold an item here and there once in a while.  I now have a bunch of stuff I'm selling (like ~30 items).  The first half dozen sales in the last 10 days or so the payout processed and paid to my bank in 2 business days.

I just closed another half dozen sales and this time all the sales are on hold pending delivery?  I have no disputes, and the other recent sales some buyers left positive feedback on.  When I sold the initial 6 I had about 12 listings going and I had about 25 going during this second set of a half dozen sales.

The only other thing that changed is I changed and confirmed a different bank account for payouts.

This is obviously something that you really can't get very detailed and specific info from Ebay on but AI is telling me I'll probably be on hold until delivery confirmation for at least another month?!?

This seems very odd that I have this long standing positive history, come back from a hiatus and list a dozen things, sell half, get immediate processing, everything goes well, and THEN they put me on the hold until delivery policy when all the sales since coming back went perfect?

It just seems counterintuitive that they didn't put that kind of hold on the account from the start of my  resurgence? But I guess their algo apparently has a volume trigger that trumps the recent deliveries of the initial batch of sales?  The only other explanation is the payout bank account change but you jump through so many security hoops to do that, it seems unlikely but I guess from a fraud perspective that would be the most likely strategy where an account is hacked, they change the payout account then list a bunch of fraud listings, get the 2-day payout and are off to Mexico.

I've got probably another dozens sales closing in 5-6 days.  I assume the hold will persist even after this section batch is delivered?  Any ideas how long they are going to keep me on hold until delivery confirmation?

Will probably take 60 to 90 days of continuous selling for the 'hold' to be lifted (showing the first 30 days had no issues)

Sellers with 'new selling activity (beyond 90 days) basically makes you a 'new' seller.

You started selling (or first sale in the past 90 days) was 2 weeks ago, so you are 'new'.

But why then why was there no hold on my first 6 sales a week or so ago?

Are you by chance drop shipping?

It takes a few months for eBay to notice it or anything out of the ordinary.

It's not illegal if you follow all the rules and regulations.

Key word on your current items for sale..."Brand New".

And hopefully, you have receipts for all these items you are selling.

eBay might ask for them.

Possibly the sudden rush of sales over a short period of time (even the last day) of a similar item in a returning seller. One big reason for the hold is the possibility of a hijacked account, particularly one with a good record but which has been lately inactive. They put the brakes on.

Apparently your past history was adequate for Ebay to trust you until the dollar amount of your sales exceeded the trust you have earned.

If you continue ,as you have, you are likely to once again be trusted to a greater extent.

Ebay is big enough and enough sellers are bad enough that risk prevention is required.

No one here knows what exactly triggered the holds after the first several sales. The payout system is automated.  Just guessing, it might have been switching banks.....  Who knows?

Hang in there. Best of luck with sales.

It's either this or the bank account change.  My gut tells me its the bank account change since that would be in my estimation the classic pattern of a hijacked account, change the bank account and add more listings.  But the fact I had recent sales with confirmed delivery BEFORE the hold would seem to contradict this theory leaving your theory as the next most plausible.

Another aspect is, sales volume got high enough that Ebay wants to make more money off "the float".  That is the interest they earn on your money while they hold it for a longer period.

For just that reason...looks like you are now 'selling' more than just 'cleaning out the closet'.

The 'system' is ran by AI (Bots) so when you hit a 'magic unknown amount in either $, or 'new' items, or an 'amount' of items in XX amount of days...the HOLD now kicks in.

You are treated as NEW because even though this account of yours is 21 years old, it could have been abandoned, taken over by bad guys, taken over by your grandkid who is a thief (just being theoretic here) etc....simply because your account 'behavior' is DIFFERENT than what it has been.

The reps dont have a clue.

After you show some level of consistency then your funds won't hold.

This was what I was guessing and everyone seems to confirm that.  Unfortunately since aside from an occasional closet cleaning, I only periodically sell a wave of items for a friend who sporadically gets inventory, I may never reach what their bot considers "consistent."

It's pretty funny though that you are sort of rewarded for being inconsistent up to a certain level by having no hold if you stay below a certain threshold.  But of course the system isn't in place to help you, it's to protect Ebay.

Re: When Will Ebay Stop Holding Funds Until Delivery (Long Time Seller With No Issues)

Just FYI.  Sold another batch and no hold this time.  So in the span of about a little over 3 weeks I had 3 batches of sales.  All were roughly around a half dozen items each wave and total sale amount each wave was $600-$1200.  First wave, no hold. Second wave hold until delivery. Third wave no hold.  Nothing really changed on the account much as far as activity type, sales volume and amount.  Guess Ebay's fraud algo just kicked in for a week then turned off.

To make money off a 'float', the funds would have to be deposited in an account. Since Ebay is paying sellers millions of dollars in funds every week, thats not possible.

It's very possible.  It works the same as a bank.  Just as people are making deposits such as their paychecks, other people are making withdrawals to pay bills.

Ebay hired/paid for Adyen to handle/hold/disperse all payments so ebay would not be making anything as the $$ is NOT in 'their' possession/bank.
