Yesterday I received a 1099-k form from ebay, the only problem is I have never sold any items on ebay. On the form it says for both the month of june and july of 2021 it says the gross amount of payment/third party network transactions was $822.48. Again I have never sold nor listed anything for sale on ebay before. I checked my transactions for those two months and I made four purchases that totaled $360. So I am not sure why I am getting this form. Is this a scam?

All my data on 1099 is accurate, minus the fact I received $0 from ebay . . .
Waiting on call back from an Ebay agent.
@nicholagrzyw_0 does it list your eBay ID on the form or a different one?

I got a call back from Ebay. (Came under 866-540-3229).
Agent immediately informed me that there was a system error that was sending out erroneous 1099-K.
7-14 business days, a corrected 1099-K should be sent to costumers and IRS.
A large part of me is still concerned . . . but I guess I'll wait the 2 weeks to see if I do get a new one.
Agent claimed "you can just ignore it". Its hard to ignore an official piece of paperwork that was sent to the IRS.

It was my ID.
Just replied to thread, but I'll state it here too.
Got a call back from Ebay. Agent informed it was system error, they are already working on fix. 7-14 business days the corrected 1099-K should be sent to customers and IRS.
I'll have to wait and see I guess.
She did state that a communication will be going out soon also . . .

Besides the threshold being $1200 for MO, the threshold is based on the total of ALL accounts using the same SSN or ITN.

Thanks for that info @nicholagrzyw_0 glad you got through to support- but I have to wonder how exactly they are going to notify the people who say they've never even created an eBay account (for either buying *or* selling) or the ones who confirmed the user ID doesn't match theirs. 🤔

OP, Ebay has a twitter support account. I talk to them a lot and they resolve things. Go to twitter and search for Ebay help.
Otherwise, if not resolved through CS, you will have to open a Better Business Complaint.

I can definitely help you!
You appear from your listings to reside in the great state of Missouri. Missouri's threshold for the issuance of a Form 1099-K for the tax year 2021 was $1,200. Were your sales equal to or above $1,200?
And since I know Missouri is the "Show Me" state, here goes:
From the Department of Revenue/State of Missouri website:

The same thing happened to our family foundation, which has never sold anything on ebay (nor any employees or family members) but received a purported 1099 today for "61 payment card and third party network ransactions" totalling almost $2,500 in May and June of 2021. The sender was eBay Commerce Inc. Calling the eBay customer service number given was pointless because the only way to get a human on the line was to give the first four letters of our account ID, which doesn't exist!

Yesterday I bought on ebay for the first time in years, and I have never sold anything on eBay. Today I received an IRS From 1099-K for 2021 claiming that I'd had over $3,000 in sales in May. The form was from eBay Commerce Inc. in San Jose, addressed to me at a former address. It lists a Filer's TIN which is unknown to me, a payee's TIN which is also not connected to me, and the account number at the bottom is also not connected to me.
Is 800-456-3229. Is 800-456-3229 truly eBay Customer service and safe to call?

Just received a 1099-K;
Contact help immediately, easiest way for me to do this was through the chatbot. You can open a request for the support team to contact you.
Over the phone I provided the support team member with the documented Account number found on the 1099-K form which they were able to trace back to an account that was opened using my personal information.
This is a very easy type of fraud to conduct; it's important that awareness is raised to draw attention so eBay pushes more preventative controls (such as ID verification).
Here is hoping I don't hear from the IRS in a few years.
