Everyone should make sure they are marking up their items at 30 percent because of paypal gouging on sales tax. If you have a 5.00 sale, and a state has a 9 percent sales tax, paypal is taking almost 20 percent, then there are the ebay fees. This is craziness, but ebays answer is that paypal is their own company. Great watching out for sellers!!!

20%? OUtch

This is a bad example due to the low price having to absorb a 30 cent transaction fee, but the percentage is still less than 9%.

PP is processing payments and processing the fees on the payments received as they ALWAYS have. They are in the business of payment processing and they charge their fees based on the total amount received. And they have always done that. Even back in the days, not so long ago, that sellers collected and remitted their own sales taxes due. PP has always charged their processing fees on sales tax that was part of the payments received.
On a $5.00 sale with a 9% sales tax rate, the fees are as follows.
5.00
.45 Sales tax
5.45 Sub total
-.50 10% approximate FVF on the sale.
-.30 PP Transaction Fee
-.16 PP Processing fee @ 2.9%
-.45 Sent back to Ebay to process sales tax payment to the appropriate state
4.04 Gross to seller after fees
Ebay's does NOT charge a FVF on sales tax.
Yes PP does take the sales tax away from the money received, but sales tax amounts have never BELONGED to the seller, it has always belonged to the appropriate state, even when you use to charge it for your own sales. The money wasn't yours to begin with. You were just collecting it for your state to remit at a later date.

Ebay no longer owns Paypal and would like you to join their "Managed Payment" program ($0.25 Charge per item - NOT transaction) check the "Payments" board and do some more research, once you're in MP you will not be able to switch back.
"Better the devil you know than the devil you don't" ?
(until you will be forced into MP anyways)

The sales tax is on the item cost and shipping. The buyer pays that. PayPal charges a fee on the total amount of money they collect and disperse. That fee is $0.30 plus 2.9% for US sales. eBay charges 10% unless you screw up. Then it could be 15%. Basically good sellers pay 13% in eBay and PayPal fees and if you marked the item up 30% to cover 13% in fees then you are gouging the buyer.

With 9% sales tax on a $5.00 sale you're looking at an increased PayPal fee of one penny compared to the PayPal fee you would have paid before sales tax was factored in.

Would all these complaining sellers rather be collecting those taxes from forty one states, and all the work that entails? Not me! Im happy to pay a small fee to PP for processing those taxes.

The only way that ever comes up to 20% is if you are selling the item for $2 or less.
PP is taking 2.9% of the sale plus .30c.
You can't count the 'tax in/tax out' in your calculation as that was never your money.

It's likely that most of us on the threads wouldn't be selling over the thresholds of these states so that we would have to charge and remit sales tax.
But I'm still with you. I just don't see it as an enormous expense and/or issue. Besides it is short term anyway. Once we are all in Managed Payments this issue will go away. Others may come, but this one will be gone.

Does PayPal charge sellers' fees on included tax or before taxes. Lawful?
PP is a for profit corporation. The service they offer is money processing. They charge a fee for money processing, which is the service they offer. They have every right to be paid for services rendered. And yes they charge their processing fee on the total amount received just as they ALWAYS have. And yes that is lawful to be paid for legal services rendered.
When you use to charge your buyer sales tax for anything you shipped within your own state, PP charged you their fees on the total amount processed. And they are doing the same thing today. The only difference is the sales tax money is then sent to Ebay for processing and remittance to the appropriate state.

Not sure what country your PayPal account is in, but mine is in the USA.
Here's how a $5 domestic sale with 9% sales tax breaks down for me:
$0.30 + $0.16 (2.9% of $5.45) = $0.46 in total paypal fees
$0.46 / $5.00 = 9.2%
Can you show me the math where yours comes to 20%?

Being in retail for 30 years I can tell you that every time you gave your credit/debit card to the salesperson the processor ( there are 100s out there that charge different amounts but 2.9 is not out of line) they are taking their percentage out of the whole amount. You are just on the other side now but this is how it works
