Seems to me Ebay is using their 'operating expenses' as a reason to charge for using their site.
PayPal, same thing.
This is nothing more than a 'TAX' on the buyers and sellers.
If you sell something to a customer that is in your state and the state requires their tax, you are in triple jeopardy.
You are 'taxed' by Ebay, PayPal and the state gets their sales tax cut.
A sale in New York: Ebay, 10%
PayPal, 3% + .30 per transaction
New York sales tax, 8.48%
TOTAL: 21.48% of YOUR sale !

huh?
You think ebay/paypal should provide everything for free?

So you think Ebay and Paypal should be run like a charity? It's not a tax, it is a cost for a service you buy. Do you also think you should get natural gas and electricity for free?

Do you not charge more on the stuff you sell to cover your 'operating expenses' (gas, time, item costs, shipping, materials, etc)? eBay provides a service and it still costs to run a website, provide customer service, etc. It is not a tax at all. You should probably read up what a tax actually is before spouting off nonsense.

Also don't forget your cost for the item itself. So total will be much lower than 21.48% 🙂

It seems to me like that is how virtually every for-profit business in the world is structured. They spend money to make money, and hope they get to keep some of it in the end.

Oh heck, why stop there?
You are also "taxed" by the person who sold you the item.
And "taxed" by the car dealer where you bought the car you used to bring it home.
And "taxed" by the gas station whre you got the fuel for the car.
And "taxed" by your town for the property taxes on the place you stored it.
And "taxed" by your electric, gas and oil companies for the heat and lights and electricity.
And "taxed" by Sam's Club where you bought the tape and padded mailers.
And "taxed" by the USPS when you bought the postage.
And "taxed" by Staples where you bought the ink catridges.
And "taxed" by your internet provider when you used the internet to list the item.
Good grief. Businesses have expenses - that's why the Egyptians invented numbers, and why businessmen have used them ever since.

I think you are confusing serviced provided is not a tax,Ebay and Paypal are not taxing authority, they cannot collect tax.
Ebay provides a venue for you to showcase your items plus pictures and keep the platform running,it gets paid when you get paid.
Paypal helps you collect payments when buyer pays you, either bank transfer or credit card or paypal fund.
If they pay you with credit card,Paypal pays probably 1% and collect 2.9% from you, they do make some money to foot their bills.
You need to understand how credit card processingw orks and how bank transfer works.
as for NY sales tax, buyer pays sales tax,not the seller, you collect the sales tax from the buyer and remit to the state.
If you are small volume seller, the state may ask you to remit once a year, check with your state dept.

I have been a member since 1998 - in the beginning i made some money each month. fees were reasonable . after Ebay raised their fees and forced you to use paypal, i quit - i have been buying a few things now and have items to sell. BUT with Ebay and paypal fees and postage so high, there is no profit or fun in selling anymore.

Ebay fees are NOT taxes.
They are simply ebay's fees. You play, you pay.

You are forgetting Federal Self-employment tax: 15.3%
You are also forgetting Federal Incom tax
For our business, after deducting taxes, fees, sourcing costs, shipping costs, etc. we only get about $25 to $35 for every $100 in sales ... eBay and PayPal are not the biggest cost.

If you can't find profit in what you're selling you are either doing something wrong or selling the wrong stuff.

You have to pay money to use eBay and accept Paypal.
Now...
eBay's platform should get you a Bigger audience for your items, and Higher Prices for your sales.
(try selling in an antique mall booth sometime too.. or at flea markets)
Those higher selling prices should offset the fees or 'taxes' that you're complaining about.
Thanks,
Lynn

For you maybe. Some of us (a lot of us actually) are able to find things that bring in profits despite what we pay. I pay much less in up front fees than I did when I first started in 1998, which means if I didn't make any sales back then, I was stuck.
