Open thread: Useless Item specifics (for the Moderator)

I'd like to start a thread of your list of useless items specifics.  Since EB is making changes, let's help them.

I'll start with clothing and item specifics "Fabric".  You already have a specific for Material, what's the point of FABRIC?

Materials are  cotton, polyester, wool, etc which can be spun into different types of fabrics like canvas, chambray, fleece, knit, etc. These are pretty important specifics for clothing (and if it's showing 571.9K total searches, it can only help your listing). There are many other specifics that are far more useless than "fabric" imo.

What changes that ebay is making are you referring to?

I hate fabrics as an item description esp. when you have "materials" as a specific.  If only they had 4 options, but EB lists about 20 for fabrics....ridiculous.  I just bypass it.

Some sellers are their own worst enemy.

Fabric type:  knit, woven, or felt/nonwoven?

There are some more detailed possibilities for each of these, but all fabrics are one of these types.

You may as well tell your complaint to the nearest inanimate object, a ebay  moderator is pretty far removed from where the decisions are made

Re: Open thread: Useless Item specifics (for the Moderator)

Fabric and material are quite different.  Fabric is the end product of a process that uses a material as the raw ingredient.  The process involves knitting, weaving, or felting the material into the fabric.

Example:  Cotton is a raw ingredient that can be woven, knitted, or felted into fabrics such as denim, satin, sateen, chambray, lawn, canvas, batiste, poplin, corduroy, terrycloth, voile, velour, chintz, calico, broadcloth, gauze, gingham, cheesecloth, twill, and flannel, among others.

P.S.  The moderators here are just that, not representatives of decision-making corporate eBay.

I agree. While there is a difference between fabric and material, I think anyone shopping for fabric knows it will not be made of steel. I am glad they no longer ask how long coffee stays hot the cup. Many downright stupid item specifics have been eliminated and I, as a seller,  appreciate it.

As a buyer, I would love knowing what fabric and what material were used in an item.

I guess you can't please everyone.

Re: Open thread: Useless Item specifics (for the Moderator)

Well, I learned something about materials and/or fabric!

I'm pretty clueless, barely past 'Is it cotton or not cotton' when I buy clothes. Was way more fancy when I lived in the UK. Could have been wool OR cotton......

Re: Open thread: Useless Item specifics (for the Moderator)

I merely skip ones I find irrelevant to my item.  Frankly, I don't want to ask ebay to do anything I think might help me.  This has been done before, and many times, the fix is even worse.

Re: Open thread: Useless Item specifics (for the Moderator)

I sell dishes and there is an IS for when it is produced. All the choices are by even decade. I wish there was a place to put your own, like 1985-1995. I have to add an IS and ignore this one. Also, I wish there was a place in the original listing form to say, Don't Ask About This Again. Now you have to go back in Tasks to check that box.  You can ignore the Task about Item Specifics, but it bugs me that it keeps nagging as a Task.

Like let's fix too many unpaid offers & auctions?

Re: Open thread: Useless Item specifics (for the Moderator)

The purpose of these discussion boards is for ebay to provide free customer service to sellers, not a place for sellers to make recommendations on how ebay could improve, that is being handled by people who have never sold a item on ebay.
