Newer seller, First return request..

Hey everyone, I just thought I'd reach out here to see it others have encountered a situation like mine.. I had listed some vintage collectables for a high dollar amount, almost 5 fingers. The buyer first messaged me to see if I'd trade outside eBay which I told him no, eBay only for a secure protected platform. He then tried to bribe me into taking PayPal explaining the fees were cheaper and I'd make more avoiding fees. At this point, I just thought, okay he's trying to scam me, let me ignore. He then offered a very reasonable offer and I accepted via eBay, figured I was safe. I next day aired and required signature, everything arrived perfectly (he sent me pictures) but he followed up with a return request saying they were not authentic and was pretty aggressive from the get go. I tried to talk to him about what he thought wasn't authentic about them and it seemed I proved him wrong so he went on to saying, my photos were fake and I was scamming. I then became a little attitudey back and asking for more photos of where some unique marks were on my items he received since he already showed he recieved and those photos looked perfect and also cause I knew the new photos I asked him to take would match my listing photos, to again prove him wrong and catch him in a lie with his new change of story of my photos were fake. He got even madder at this point and said well "I called a MAJOR company owner" in less than 6hrs of having and "he confirmed they were fake." I obviously knew this was a fib but still said okay, well if I could get proof of that convo to confirm, that'd be great. He then again, responding nasty demanding his money back or he'd leave a bad feedback. I did offer him a percentage back and for him to keep the items but he declined.. and please note I did NOT list returns were accepted on this item because it's a vintage high dollar item. Anyways.. I've opened a case with EBay now but no response yet.. Should I be worried? A person like this can't possible win and keep my items and money and I'd hope ebay wouldn't force a return, I know he would return an empty box. This is where I really hope these disputes are not automated and there is a real professional that can easily see this is buyer abuse. Also, what can I do to avoid this in the future. Thank you all so much!

If the buyer filed an INAD and you don't accept the return, yes, Ebay could refund the buyer from your account and let them keep the item.

You said "I've opened a case with ebay".  What kind of case did you open?   If the buyer opened the case then he certainly can win and you could lose the item and the money.

Just a update.. day four and case is still in review after I escalated it four days ago. Buyer stopped responding.. I really hope a real person and not a bot is handling this. It's obviously a scam on the buyers end. They even signed for the package after I over nighted. Our conversations should be a easy read and decision... Anyone know why it's taking so long? It said I'd get a response in 2 days..

They had every intention of getting for item, they have no intention of returning the same item and no, ebay does NOT 'have your back'.

They will return something completely different and get a full refund. You should have blocked the scammer as soon as they tried to get you to sell it outside of ebay.

A couple things, you still have not answered the question of what type of "case" you opened as the seller.

The other, to answer your question, they generally don't respond in the timeframe they state they will. Also, even if a real person reviews it (which is doubtful), you have to realize that English may not be their first language so they may not even comprehend the messages between you and the buyer.

That's usually a bad move on the sellers part.

Don't be surprised if they refund the buyer and you don't get your item back.

@tradecollections91 : What kind of a case did you (the seller) open in this situation? Do you mean that the buyer opened a case? If so, was it for Item Not Received (which seems unlikely) or Not As Described?

@tradecollections91  I'm very surprised ebay allowed a new seller to list such expensive items. There is usually a limit, not only to the number of items you can list, but the dollar amount as well. This is so that newer sellers don't get taken advantage of and gives you a chance to get some experience selling items.

As other have said, if the buyer is difficult and scammy before a sale, it's unlikely it will get any better. They would have been on my Blocked Buyer List immediately. If you do get a return request, it's best not to argue with the buyer as they might intentionally damage your item before sending it back.

I have a private ebay account in addition to this one, and I never sell high-cost items there. Yes, you get more exposure, but more scammers as well.

You can report that buyer for trying to take a sale outside of ebay and for feedback extortion.

If he hasn't already done so, tell them they need to open a return so you can send them a return label. You have to respond in the time given by ebay or they will refund the buyer AND let them keep the item. Best of Luck!

Listing as "No returns" is going to cost you a ton of money. Possibly with this deal.

 

And, it probably should. Sellers who refuse to stand behind their sales are a problem.

     Several people have asked what kind of case the seller opened and if they buyer had opened a case. So far no response from the OP on either so I suspect in a day or two we will see a post from the OP that states eBay ruled in favor of the buyer and allowed them to keep the item. 

     VERY expensive lesson but one I am sure they will not make again.
