IF YOU WERE IN CHARGE OF EBAY, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Just wondering...there has been posts regarding the decisions, policies and path Ebay has taken.

So have at it.  If YOU were in charge of Ebay, what would YOU do?

  • Buyer limitations as to returns, capped at 5%. Exceed 5% and you are gone (barring extenuating circumstances), banned by name, address, IP and payment info.

Due to the propensity toward legitimate SNADs, I respectfully disagree with this.

Buyers could be banned through no fault of their own.  But perhaps that comes under the extenuating circumstances you mention.

  • Seller feedback  to be removed and replaced with an automated transaction count

But checking that feedback gives a buyer an idea of whether or not they should buy from them; thus they can avoid problematic sellers by checking it.

Re: IF YOU WERE IN CHARGE OF EBAY, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

castle...Yahoo auctions was incredible. Much like eBay in the very beginning. Lots of sellers had NO idea what they had so you could scoop up the best stuff for pennies. I loved it. I was a book dealer primarily and still have some of the best ones (children's Golden Age) and am keeping them because I'll never be able to afford to replace them. I'm regretting selling some of what I did, but we went through some tough financial times in the 2008-ish period.

Battened down the hatches but lost our B & M shop anyhow, people just stopped buying. Oh well, we do a local Flea Market now once a month, mostly just for grins and giggles. And it beats the stress of selling here.

By the time I got around to Yahoo auctions, being very late to the party, the party was over.  I had heard about Ebay for some time before I actually ventured here.

Disney auctions are what brought me to Ebay.  They advertised heavily in magazines and their ads were very compelling and enticing.  They had me at "hello".

I love vintage children's book...so many good memories.

So very sorry you lost your B & M, but glad you have the flea market.

I would require that eBay executives walk in the shoes of your average eBay seller.......then make them buy some new shoes from .....you guessed it a eBay seller........

I'm glad you think this is fun.  I had hopes that this would get people thinking and that maybe some good ideas might emerge out of this.  @lewisburggold

made a thought provoking comment that sellers should be excited about selling.  Unfortunately things can discourage instead of excite.  I think good sales can generate that excitement, and a feeling that you are valued and listened to creates that positivity as well, but there are things that erode trust.

Alas, as @7606dennis would say, fun cannot be mandated.  Or can it?Smiley Happy

While I don't remember ever saying that exactly, I often ask people if we are having fun yet.  Alas!  I don't always get the email so I miss the scheduled time for having fun.  Real bummer, that. Smiley Wink

First I'd  banish the 30 day free returns policy  from my palace forever . Then I'd place[ well built]   guards  at every castle entry that were extremely well trained at indentifying and quickly  ousting evil  buyers and sellers .  I would advise the king that he is no longer king  and from now on the  entire village  will rule with an iron fist . Tulips, I LOVE this!  As you might guess I am slightly biased to this style.

Mi lady thanks thee  lol

Stand behind honest sellers when it’s obvious a buyer is taking advantage. A sellers feedback and length of time selling on eBay should have weight in eBay’s decisions. There’s got to be better protection for sellers.

Re: IF YOU WERE IN CHARGE OF EBAY, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

5% return ban? That’s ridiculous....and I’m a seller too! A better solution to buyer returns would be buyer-paid returns and a 7-day return policy. In case of buyer fraud, ie: returns empty box, different item, damaged item, etc., this would be arbitrated between buyer, seller and an actual single person at eBay assigned to that arbitration so there aren’t five different reps involved. Finally, if a buyer is reported for fraud more than twice from two different sellers buyer is shown the door. I’ve bought and sold here for 20 + years (different I’d) and I’ve only one time had an empty box return so I know this would work. If the same person who sent me the empty box did the same to another seller, it should be assumed that they are scammers.

Stop trying to appease every buyer at the expense of good sellers.

One more thing. When I buy an item here, I open it the day it arrives...usually within 15 minutes of it arriving as I am home most days. If it’s not as described I immediately ask for a return. I don’t wait weeks. Once the return is accepted, I take it to the post office that day or the next if it’s too late in the day. I do this because I’m conscious of the sellers time, effort and the possibility that the seller would want to get the item back online for sale quickly. I would want the same done for me. One of the biggest problems on here is buyers total ignorance and or disregard for the seller.

@7606dennis  My apologies as my statement was somewhat misleading~which occurred to me as I typed it but alas! I neglected to correct it.  I merely meant that you often say, Alas!  So no, you never said fun cannot be mandated.  But you do say, Alas!  Sorry I neglected clarification there.

I wonder if the UA changed; I think there used to be something in there that said they would consider that?

Thoughful considerations; however, I must respectfully disagree.  While returns for buyer's reasons should be paid for by the buyer, there are many legitimate SNADs and it would be galling to expect a buyer to pay return shipping under those circumstances.

As for point two, that would also be a hard thing to work out.  If you have ever returned an item for SNAD to a seller, only to have the seller claim it wasn't his item, when it absolutely was, you can see my point.

Good points and I adher to them as well.  Open right away, contact with pictures and explanation sent same day to seller, send back very quickly when accepted.  I respect other's time as well.  But with many B & Ms having generous return periods, it has come to be expected.
