So, I got suspended yesterday for 7 days, due to transactions out of Ebay. Fair enough . Ebay makes the rules. I sell higher end sport jerseys ranging in price of $300 to 6-8-$1000. Before you think, Wow I wish I can make money like that, let me say its not like I sell one everyday, especially today, and I have my cost into these items as well. When I sell a jersey for lets say $400 , ebay takes there 15-20% , and Pay Pal takes there ( whatever it is ) cut, which would work out to around $80 after all is done. To me that is a lot of money. Consider a seller who sells an item for $10 . His / her cost would be $2 to sell that item. If I sold an item for $1000 , my cost would be $200.
There is something wrong here. For both sellers we get the exact same service and tools to sell. There should be a cap somewhere.
I have been suspended for selling outside of Ebay. Did I learn anything?Your **bleep** right I will do it again, and will be smarter about it. If Ebay would give me a better percentage on my sold costs , then sure I am all about giving them their fair cut, and would have to look at ways of saving ton their absorbent fees..
Iknow , some of you are going to say, well why not leave Ebay, or that's the deal you signed up for. Which is fine. I get it. I guess I am just a rebel...Thanks for reading my rant.

I feel your pain. I mean we all know what we signed up for ... but sometimes when you sit down and actually figure out all the fees we're paying, it seems like quite a bit.
Good luck to you!

Your % quoted is incorrect, there are caps on final value fees, and feel free to go elsewhere and try to save selling costs. Consignment - most places take 50-60%. Your own brick & mortar store - outrageous costs based on square footage and many stores are closing because of online sales competition. And many other online auction sites do not get the traffic that ebay does.

I should also add they can charge the fees even if you didn't sell off site, but they thought you may have. I know because I was given a warning.

You say you plan to do it again and will be smarter next time. Good luck to you.
But many of us have seen people come on to the boards after having been permanently banned from being able to sell on ebay, begging for how to get the permanent ban lifted. Permanent ban is a permanent ban on ebay.

Why should I pay a higher percentage FVF on my $4 item than you pay on your $400 item? People selling less expensive items work as hard as you do at listing their goods, packaging items safely, taking good pictures, answering buyer questions, etc. They pay less in fees per item because they make less per item.

@Anonymous
Thought y'all might like a heads up about a seller who admits he's broken the rules and will continue to do so

And as far as selling off eBay, I don't get why you wouldn't just . . . go to places that aren't eBay if you want to avoid the FVF.
Normally I would say "Oh yeah, put your items on eBay but also on Craigslist and Facebook. Cancel the eBay item if it sells on Facebook, it's perfectly 'eBay legal' as long as the FB buyers never saw your eBay listings."
But you've dug yourself into a hole where eBay is going to assume you're selling 'illegally' even if you have buyers who legit found your products through another site. At this point your best option is to have some items you list on eBay and some you list off of eBay, and never the twain shall meet.
I think you're being very foolish by planning on flouting eBay's rules AGAIN--especially by announcing it on a message board. Do you have something to mask your IP address? Because if not you've painted a big target on your back.

Are you tipping eBay?
The rest of us pay 10% (9.15% with a store) to eBay.
My books show eBay fees running 16.55% for FY2018 when you consider addons like relisting returns and promoted listings, items that didn't sell the first go round, and FVF on shipping. Just something to keep in mind.
PayPal fees tack on another 4.19% according to my books - probably includes processing fees associated with returns and currency conversion fees, among others.
Shipping was another whopping 21.21%.
These numbers were significantly better the year before. I expect them to be even worse this year with deteriorating profit margins and higher fees all around.

how does ebay find out if one is selling off ebay? An ebay seller I buy from also has a website, same name. Clearly they are not being kicked off for also selling on their website which is essentially advertised for here.

I'm not sure about this... B&M has higher overhead to start with, but until you are out of space completely those costs remain relatively fixed. You're also not paying any FVFs or shipping or returns or surcharges for too many returns. You will need to advertise, though.
I did some math on this a while back and at the time, found that the margin would be a bit better on the B&M if I can push the volume I want.

You get their attention if you get a message from someone on ebay about the item, then you delete the listing.

Lets say you sold 8 jerseys a year for $4,800 and another seller sold 500 items $20 each a year totaling $10,000. Your fees should be lower ? OK

They find out if someone messages the seller through eBay, and the seller says "Oh, just send me $XXX to Paypal account (email)" and then cancel the listing. Or if the seller says, "Oh, you're interested in item XYZ? Email me at (address)" . . . and then the seller cancels the item.
However, it's a different story if you are selling to a buyer who is completely separate from eBay--has never seen your eBay listing, doesn't know you even list on eBay. Like, let's say someone puts up a real-life booth at a flea market. They sell a mirror to someone. They then cancel the listing for the mirror on eBay. That is "eBay legal." Nothing about the sale 'touched' eBay.
On the other hand, if someone finds out about a listing through eBay, then eBay expects to be paid. Which is fair because their advertising / venue has made the sale possible.

What if you gave the buyer a business card at the swap meet when you sold them the item, and they later contact you about that item on eBay?
