Buyer bought a watch from me then a couple of days later. they filed a return case, stating "defective or does not work"
I was not sure what the problem was but do have to accept the return as eBay approved.
I issued the return label and received the watch. It was wrapped in newspaper, no box, no papers, no tags, and had been resized with links at bottom of the box.
After I sent the free return label, buyer sends a message that they took a shower and noticed moisture on the watch at night.
You will notice that from the pressure and steam in the shower. Watches are designed to stand pressure when swimming but not showers, would you take a shower in your Rolex?
Shower steam is not the same as water resistant, the case will get hot from outside and when it cools it steams inside.
Maybe I am wrong, anyone out there that can provide an explanation other than the one I did?
I would like to include that in my return policy>
By the way, my return policy states that the item must be in the same condition, but eBay doesn't care about that, it looks like buyer can return in condition, and that's wrong.

You offer free returns so you accept the return.
Your return policy doesnt mean anything. eBays MBG trumps all that you may want to write.
Your return policy can not and will not be enforced.
eBays policy allows some sellers to deduct up to 50% for items returned in less than the same condition.

The 'pressure' of water at 10' down, or 100' down is MUCH more acute than it would be in a 'shower'?
Steam? There's 'steam' coming from your clothes when you come into a 'warm office' on a rainy, cold day.
Sounds to me the watch failed. All the rest is moot at this point
a.) condition received, still 'used' and NOT destroyed, you can put 'links' back in
b.) you accept 'free returns'
So again; seems like done deal and as far as what you put in the description going forward, I would find out what the 'water resistant' even means if it can't handle a shower?

I believe the 50% refund for damaged returns is for TRS members only.

Really no need to include anything in your return policy. Ebay policy states the item must be returned in the same condition as when you sent it. Since the watch has been altered and was not returned in the same condition as described in your listing I would issue a partial refund. In this case I would deduct half or 50 percent of the amount the buyer paid.

My opinion.
You are absolutely right.
However, when it comes to a INAD return, the buyer is always right.
I would accept the return, deduct the 50% if you can.
Full refund if you can't and be done with it,
Sorry this happened to you.

Not sure your shower theory is credible because I have sent cheap waterproof watches through the washer machine, and they still work fine. I can't imagine a waterproof watch is good if it can't take a shower. I think you have a legit argument about the Box and paperwork but if you fight the return and eBay decides for the buyer you will lose all fees associated with the sale. Something to consider? Good Luck

Not true, I deducted 80% on this return.

Open to your suggestion, any proof?

It is and only for certain reasons. The policy has specifics on when you can use the discount and by how much. So follow the policy.

The item was for $85 and I refunded $17.

I posted previously if you fight the return, you may lose all your fees and the cost of the item. Ebay will decide the dispute and you will be notified of the disposition. Good Luck

Contact ebay support and notify them the item was not returned in the same condition. I have done this a few times and was given a full refund by ebay each time. I don't know why everyone is saying there's nothing you can do. There's lots you can do.
Click on 'help and contact' at the top of the page. Scroll down to 'contact us'. Click on 'returns and refunds'. Click on 'how to handle a return request as a seller'. Click 'chat with our automated assistant'. Type 'agent' into the chat box and follow the instructions. Have the order/item # ready. Inform them what happened.

I would consider Reporting the buyer.
Not because of the demand for a refund, but because you made a partial, they may deccide to go to their credit card for a full refund.
Leaving you out $102, the partial plus the full refund.
With the Report on file, eBay has another record that the buyer was partially refunded and may possibly if everything goes well refuse to process the credit card chargeback.
Leave a papertrail that uses up the output of Kimberly-Clark for a full day.

Non-TRS sellers who offer free returns and are not Below Standard are also eligible to deduct up to 50% of the refund if the item is returned damaged. (I imagine this would not apply if the item was faulty.)
See Seller Protections policy page below for reference.

“An item is returned after it was used or damaged by the buyer
Sellers who offer free returns and who are not Below Standard are eligible for this protection
