How to NOT have Automated Returns Acceptance!

My Hell, I just saw this message from eBay and am Freaked out beyond belief!  How do we NOT have to do this?  Thanks.

"For any item that comes with a buyer pay return shipping policy returns are now automatic.  eBay will now automatically accept the return request and provide the buyer with a return shipping label"

I believe eBay's default setting for returns is the automatic returns.   Sellers need to MANUALLY turn that off it they do not want that feature.

From the Classic site, you need to click on your account then select site preferences.  Scroll down to find "RETURN PREFERENCES" and  under automatic returns, click the blue button that says "TURN OFF".    Then it will look like my screenshot.

Re: How to NOT have Automated Returns Acceptance!

I don't think it would apply if you don't take returns.

If you do take returns, it really doesn't change anything except that it automatically accepts and provides a return lable, because if you take returns, you take returns for any reason.

So if you take returns, you could not refuse to take one, anyway.

You can offer free returns!

If you offer free returns you get to choose if you want actually want the item returned or not.

Re: How to NOT have Automated Returns Acceptance!

That is only for remorse returns when the buyer pays return shipping.

You mention RMA's in your listing. I don't know how that will work with the automatic returns. Do you have a RMA required checked off in your return preferences?  I don't have sellers hub so I'm not sure what preferences are available to you there.

Re: How to NOT have Automated Returns Acceptance!

So I guess free returns or no returns would eliminated auto acceptance of same.

It would....I have free returns, not because of this, offered them since 2012. Had 1 buyer take advantage of it and that guy even offered to pay since it was a 100% remorse return and he felt bad about me covering the cost.

Re: How to NOT have Automated Returns Acceptance!

I bet this new feature is really freaking out all those sellers out there with a return policy that also states a return is only accepted for an error or not as described issue and can be refused.   I'm happy to hear that maybe this was seen and addressed by ebay.

Re: How to NOT have Automated Returns Acceptance!

It does seem that there were many sellers who think returns means they can adjudicate the matter, if they will accept the return or not, when if you take returns, you take returns for any reason. No qualifiers, you just take them.

Re: How to NOT have Automated Returns Acceptance!

I suspect that at least one of the reasons that ebay decided to start the automatic returns is because of sellers who did argue about a return even though their listing stated they accepted returns.

I don't think they would have made that announcement about automatic returns if it could just be turned off.

Pretty sure that's for sellers who pay return shipping charges but want to automatically approve refunds without a return under certain conditions (such as a very low value item).

I believe you are right; have seen many listings, and many threads, where the seller puts qualifiers on just what returns they will accept, when you take returns, you take returns for any reason.

If you take returns, you take them for any reason, equals nothing to argue about, so automation makes sense.

Re: How to NOT have Automated Returns Acceptance!

Both of my blue buttons are off so I think I'm good.  Thank you for showing the info and providing the explanation to go with the screenshot.  Very helpful!  thanks!

Re: How to NOT have Automated Returns Acceptance!

There is a lot of "Assumptions" and finger pointing in the responses.  Imagine that the foundation of the question might be nothing more than this.... the Sale is between the Seller and the Buyer.  The Buyer should contact the Seller for any and all problems with the Sale.  Unless eBay begins having their CSR's source and list the Seller of these items is each and every one of us.  If you are a big box merchant and don't want to be bothered with chump change, then ok fine... we still deserve the opportunity to say no.. I will take care of my customers... because that is what they are... they made a purchase from you and you and you and you and not directly from eBay as the seller.
