How to NOT have Automated Returns Acceptance!

My Hell, I just saw this message from eBay and am Freaked out beyond belief!  How do we NOT have to do this?  Thanks.

"For any item that comes with a buyer pay return shipping policy returns are now automatic.  eBay will now automatically accept the return request and provide the buyer with a return shipping label"

Re: How to NOT have Automated Returns Acceptance!

we still deserve the opportunity to say no

If you say no to a return (remorse or otherwise) when you offer returns AND the buyer pays the shipping for the return all you will end up with is an Unresolved By Seller defect, you will give the buyer a full return and eBay may or may not require the buyer to return the item.

Basically eBay is attempting to save you from yourself unless you can give me one scenario where saying no to the return would be warranted.

Automated accepted returns is a good option to have less headaches or/or  discourse with buyers if they want a return. They get it anyway no matter what ,so it's just standard business practice.

I agree with what you've said--for a remorse returns, there is no reason  to make a buyer wait several days for the return to be approved. But I think the arguement against this practice is valid as well--I think the issue with automatic acceptance is that there are situations where the seller may want to offer a replacement OR simply issue a refund without a return and automatic acceptance means the seller doesn't have the opportunity work something out with the buyer.

It does seem that there were many sellers who think returns means they can adjudicate the matter, if they will accept the return or not, when if you take returns, you take returns for any reason. No qualifiers, you just take them.

I don't have a problem with that... but I still want to approve them myself.  The simple fact is that an eBay label for the return is likely going to cost my buyer WAY more than they should spend to return it (since I probably sent it out for less than $1).  I don't want them using (and paying for) eBay labels.

Both of my "remorse" Returns (that's right, all TWO of them) were because of buyers not reading the listing.  If they want to just keep the item in exchange for a partial refund, I'm open to that in many cases - they bid too much because they neglected to read the listing, I'm not going to get that much from someone who did read, I don't really want to re-sell it.  If it's a known repeat bidder, I might well just refund and abandon the goods, rather than force them into buying an expensive eBay label (or even using a couple of stamps).  Automation is not generally compatible with personal customer service, which is what I provide.

There is a lot of "Assumptions" and finger pointing in the responses.  Imagine that the foundation of the question might be nothing more than this.... the Sale is between the Seller and the Buyer.  The Buyer should contact the Seller for any and all problems with the Sale.  Unless eBay begins having their CSR's source and list the Seller of these items is each and every one of us.  If you are a big box merchant and don't want to be bothered with chump change, then ok fine... we still deserve the opportunity to say no.. I will take care of my customers... because that is what they are... they made a purchase from you and you and you and you and not directly from eBay as the seller.

Re: How to NOT have Automated Returns Acceptance!

The Fall Update and recent eBay email states that automated returns (remorse only) are now in effect. You have no option to opt out...and determined buyers know how to get around "no returns".

At least with the automatic accepted remorse returns the buyer pays for return shipping and re-stocking fee (if applicable).

The only drawback is some buyers are hair trigger quick to open a return when in some situations really what is needed is communication with the seller beforehand (for instance, the buyer can't figure out how to work their item and asks the seller instead of rushing to get the automatic accepted return).

Re: How to NOT have Automated Returns Acceptance!

misreading the statement again...  "We still deserve the opportunity to say no"  is not in any way shape or form to say we deserve the opportunity to say NO to returns  (although we do).

It was never stated nor implied that this thread was to the issue of refusing returns... please read the initial question:   Re: How to NOT have Automated Returns Acceptance!

"We still deserve the opportunity to say no"  is in regards to saying NO to "AUTOMATIC RETURNS".

I believe eBay's default setting for returns is the automatic returns.   Sellers need to MANUALLY turn that off it they do not want that feature.

From the Classic site, you need to click on your account then select site preferences.  Scroll down to find "RETURN PREFERENCES" and  under automatic returns, click the blue button that says "TURN OFF".    Then it will look like my screenshot.

I cannot find the button that "SOLVED" message entry shows in the screen shot?

@jgrit

Knowing ebay, that page has probably changed since then. This is an old thread. Feel free to start another topic and I'm sure you will get some help!

In the meantime, I'll go look at my page and grab some screen shots for you.

Re: How to NOT have Automated Returns Acceptance!

yes this is cause ebay wants more cases open ,so the rating goes down and then they can charge more on ebay fees. if you have less than 6% or 5% or 4% or 3% of return rate I really don't know which number i s right cause I have call them and nobody tells me which is the real number. So your rating goes down and they charge the extra 4% of your sales. how about that.

Thanks.
