A buyer gave me the wrong shipping address and package was returned.
He has since corrected his address and is asking me to re-ship his item.
I just tried to send him a message asking him for his email address so that i can send him a paypal money request to pay for the second round of shipping, but ebay blocked my message.
I thought once you conducted business with someone that ebay no longer blocked those types of messages.
Other than contacting ebay, can you think of any way to remedy this?

Totally agree! I take responsibility for my mistakes and expect others to do so as well ... whether is $6 or $60! I've had buyers purchase "local pickup only" item(s) then ask me to ship, which in some cases I've done. Called ebay and have been told that I could ask for a paypal id/email to request extra shipping in an ebay msg. Surprised about that a bit but all was fine ...

Why the struggle over the shipping paid by the buyer? If the buyer wants the item, he'll have to pay the shipping again, no? The item has been returned so the seller is out the FV and .30 cents? Can the FV be credited for problem with the address?
Yes, the buyer paid the first shipping.
The item was returned because of a invalid address.
Now have the item.
If I cancel the transaction,
the buyer will get a full refund and I will be out the $6 to ship the item and have it returned to me.
Even if he buys it again and pays the $6 shipping. I am still out the original $6 shipping.
As suggested earlier, if a cancel the transaction and just eat the shipping,
it might be best to block the buyer and not deal with him again.

Yes, during the Offers to buy or sell outside of eBay discussions, triplet #1 said eBay stops monitoring messages after a buyer has completed checkout.
But if the message scanning has resumed @inhawaii you can send a message with an image instead.
Very cleaver. Thank you!

Yes, my reply also suggested that some buyers use a picture.
But again, what error message are you getting? Ebay now allows email addresses to be exchanged when there is a transaction, so I'm curious what you're seeing?

Red letters and "ebay does not allow blah blah blah outside of ebay. Please correct your message and try again."

Oh, interesting. That is not supposed to happen when you're in a tx with someone & hasn't happened for quite awhile. It sounds like they've re-implemented it, as that is the same message you used to get, years ago.
Back when we'd get that msg all the time, it often came & went, so I would just try again at another time &/or try sending it to the coded email, like someone mentioned above. They should get it, even though you won't see their email. If those don't work, try the picture method or the coded method.
ETA: I miss your old quote, but this one is from one of my favorites 🙂

This is interesting, especially considering that messaging the buyer for their paypal address is exactly how eBay CS tells you to correct the issue.

I"m still confused, he paid for the shipping, didn't he? It didn't come out of your money. If anything, he has to pay a second time for shipping. Not you. If you have your item back, refund his money. He gets his money less the $6.00 that you should be able to deduct from the refund? I don't understand why you think you have to refund his shipping.

I think b/c a lot of people responding are not understanding the question, he's getting some odd replies. OP's MBG doesn't matter anymore, it was already voided when it was undeliverable the first time. There's absolutely no reason for him to write off the $6 or relist the item, or any of that. Just bill the guy the $6 & when he pays, send it again.
ETA: I do think Ebay should have a more formalized process for this, considering how often it happens. Lately, it's been once a month for me.

Because if you "cancel" a transaction, it refunds the buyer in full.
I can't cancel a transaction and refund the buyer everything except the shipping.

**Sorry, I meant Seller Protection, not MBG, in post 39.

Can you not do a refund vs a cancellation and just refund a portion or is that option not available to you? How would that be any different from refunding a buyer postage overage after shipping??

I thought about that, but then i was thinking....
Partial refund = Buyer has the ability to leave feedback
Cancel the sale = Buyer does not have the ability to leave feedback
I've been thinking about this all day.
I think I'm going to go along with what some of my esteemed colleagues suggested:
cancel/full refund , eat the shipping, block, go on with life.

Aloha!
I've had this happen occasionally over the years. I do not cancel the order, but instead just let it ride out.
I simply do a partial refund (which is less the shipping charges), after sending a message thru eBay to the buyer explaining the partial refund, and letting the buyer know that the item will be relisted, and please be sure the shipping address is correct when he purchases the item again.
I do the partial refund by going into my Seller Hub > Orders > Paid and Shipped > find the sale > click on the drop-down box > Send Refund > Other Adjustment > Deduct the shipping cost > Send
Then I relist the item or do a "Sell Similar".
I have not had any repercussions from doing this, I get my shipping money back as a result of simple math, and the buyer gets a fair refund... I haven't had any neutral or neg feedback in such cases, as the buyer is usually apologetic, understanding and embarrassed.
No need to go thru a PP payment request, contact eBay's Customer-No-Service, or go thru other gymnastics.
I have not had to do this in about a year, so I hope that procedures and rules haven't changed.
Cheers, Duffy
