I sold an item in March of 2020 and the customer just(1/26/2021) sent me a message stating the part was just now tried for the first time and found to be defective. They want to return it or at least have and exchange.
Do I have to worry about any issues if I say no?

@lightlily_arts wrote:You can say no if you want. They no longer have any recourse with eBay, PayPal, or their credit card as too much time has passed. Only if you want to be a good seller. Why wait nearly a year to use something.
Example last week I went to replace the ink jet cartridges that I purchased last September. I always keep them in stock so I never run out. The whole set was defective. I know better than to try a claim, but I do know who I purchased them from. I won't buy theirs again.
You're not the first person to have issues with ink... I bought a toner for my partner's computer (for when the current one ran out), and found out a year after I bought it, it was defective. There's no reason to be checking this right away if you don't need to change the ink, but as a result I was out $120 and had to buy another toner.

And I imagine that the same can be said for overly entitled young brats who believe it's OK to denigrate a whole classification of people without a single shred of supporting evidence.

Thanks for the details. While I was leaning towards the same direction as you suggested, I did manage to borrow some of your verbiage:
Thank you for reaching out to me. Unfortunately, I am unable to honor your request for a variety of reasons. Mainly the amount of time from the sale until now. While I may have my own questions of the timing, Ebay has strict policies that I have to abide to in order to remain a seller in it's good graces.
The only thing I can offer at this point is to sell you an additional part at a lower cost plus shipping.

That's a nice balance.

Wow!
1. If it weren't for old people, you wouldn't be here.
2. My parents sacrificed throughout there life (World War II and the depression) and you think they are greedy.
3. Who pays for your sell phone?
4, You need to change your username to something that includes intolerant or selfish.

Yesterday I received a message requesting a return or replacement at 98 days.
My reply: The eBay parent company considers all sales final at 60 days. The links to issue a refund or print another shipping label are no longer available. Retailers state their return policy and then buyers abide by that.
Analysis
Sending a refund or replacement outside of eBay would be a headache. Plus the seller fees are not refundable.
To add insult to injury, the photos they sent proved they lied. They must have stepped on these plastic parts.
I have had a number of buyers who never purchased from me request a refund. I just had the identical item for sale on eBay months later.

I'm late to the party and you have a solution, but to take the sting away and make the medicine go down easier when I told them no refunds after so long, I'd offer them 20% off another purchase, or a discount coupon to use on another purchase.
(take advantage of every opportunity to keep buyers coming back)
