Charged a final value fee for an item I didn't sell

So I am very angry at this point. A few weeks ago I was suspended from ebay for 2 weeks for receiving an offer in my messages. Even though I rejected the offer; ebay still suspended my account. Now that is utter **bleep** in and of itself. Now today I am even angrier. I got an email saying that my bank account has reached zero dollars and now I owe a fee of 15 dollars to my bank. Who charged my bank account? well it was ebay. I received a final value fee of 60 dollars for an item that I didn't even sell. That is purely ridiculous and I have no intention of paying this amount. It doesnt help that ebay customer service is almost impossible of getting ahold. If someone could message me about this that would be great.

brain are you able to go into a seller or buyers ebay PMs and read the back and forths that took place? When I chatted with trinton last week I believe he said he and ebay CS were allowed into accounts to review things that might or might not have taken place...

Yes. I've had occasional conversations with eBay people in the past where they have clearly been reviewing the messages, including while I was conversing with them on the phone.

Maybe ebay shouldn't assume things. I have my Item still listed on my account again so there's some sort of proof that I didn't sell it. As well as all my replies to the scammers telling them I wouldnt sell outsside of ebay.

I went back to re read this thread as I thought you said something about your response.  Stating you wouldn't sell outside of Ebay would cover you, but the removal of the item may have looked like you changed your mind.  It's the removal that generated the fee, and I am sorry you got charged, but I doubt they will remove it or credit it back to you, particularly as Brian has confirmed the proper actions were taken.

They may look at it as you removed it to sell outside of Ebay but it fell through.

BUT if they relisted it, that means it was never sold, right? Either On ebay or OFF.

What is not to say he did not have more than one.

Or the off ebay sale fell through.

Why did you remove the listing then?

Same. I think its completely unethicle for ebay to charge people with no confirmation of a sale. A real person should go over the message before the bot automatically charges you.

They do.

@Anonymous

Sorry to call you back in again, but can you explain what the proper procedure would be for a seller when a buyer contacts them wanting to take it off ebay.

Do you ignore it?  Do you tell them no, I will not sell off of ebay, or

Was the email itself immaterial but it was the fact that the seller cancelled the listing?

I want to know how to procced in case this situation happens to me.  How do I protect myself from ebay taking this action?

My problem would be how did ebay access my bank account wipe it out and it results in a overdraft charge. Its always been said they will bill your account and if bill goes unpaid your listing privledges will be suspended and turned over to a collection agency....

Where did ebay say that?

One would think they would go to the path easily traveled - first look to see if you have enough money in your paypal account.  Next to whatever funding source you have attached to your account?  Billing and then sending you to collections is not cost free for ebay, so they would use that as a last resort.

For sellers?  Isn't that why ebay has you sign up with a back up funding source like a check book, bank account or credit card?

But can you prove without a doubt that the OP sold this item off ebay? Because if your bots are just "guessing" that doesn't seem right to me.

Hi again @myjunqueyourtreasure, as I mentioned earlier in this thread, an agent reviews account actions taken in regard to off-eBay sales. The action taken on the OP’s account was reviewed and verified prior to a restriction and/or fee being placed. While I cannot go into specific details for this situation, I can confirm the correct action was taken based on the information we had available.

When it comes to off-site sales, we review the communication between the two parties to determine if a violation has occurred. If we have reason to believe a transaction was taken off our site or that the buyer or seller intended to take the transaction off the site, appropriate action will be taken. The outcome of the off-site sale is not something we would have access to and would ultimately be irrelevant - soliciting or agreeing to an off site transaction would be a violation of our policy in of itself.

If a buyer contacts you to request that a transaction be taken off of eBay, we recommend that you respond with something along the lines of the following: "Thank you for your interest in my item. Taking a transaction off of eBay is a violation of site policy so the purchase will need to be made through eBay checkout. Let me know if you have any other questions." A seller is not required to provide this kind of response, it is simply a suggestion - we won't take action on a member's account unless we have reason to believe an off site transaction occurred and it is simply a best practice to respond in some way affirming that your items will only be sold on eBay.

Again, to summarize, we will only take action on a buyer or seller when we have reason to believe an off site transaction was requested, agreed to or completed. Automatic warnings/educational emails may be received, but you would not be in any danger as long as you are keeping your transactions on the site.

Yes. You’ve got it right Em. they first bill whatever payment method you gave them when you signed up. If that doesn’t work, they go to your backup funding source. If that doesn’t work, you go to collections. So if you owe them $75 and you’ve got just about $75 in your checking account & that is your payment method, and they charge you, they’ve in effect wiped out your bank account.

I guess I never realized that I always thought they'd debit your account first and block you from using the site until bill was paid.
