I want to cancel an order that is going to cost significantly more than I thought to ship, to the point it makes no sense to sell it. If I do this is there any fee from ebay? WIll I get a penatly or defect from ebay? Will final value fees be refunded? Will paypal refund all fees? If I get a defect how does will that affect my acount if I only sell a few things at a time?

I would much rather take a monetary loss than get a defect and/or negative feedback. Next time use calculated shipping. It's for this reason I don't offer free shipping on heavier items. It's just not feasible for me to do.

Also maybe try a different shipping method? FedEx Smart Post is usually cheaper than Priority Mail. For some of my calculated listings, that can make a difference of $30!

I can remember when there was no such thing. But then eBay realized that it had to find a way to get rid of sellers like the OP, because they were driving away too many buyers.

I remember those times as well. Very little problems back then; well, at least that is how it seemed to me. I think the proliferation of cell phones brought masses of people online, and that changed the dynamic drastically. Suddenly there were more issues, not as described, broken due to poor packing, requests for money post sale, cancellations because they did not get the right price, etc.

There were fewer problems back then for sure, unless you were a buyer in which case there were more.
