Buyer purchased this lot of 4 jigsaw puzzles from me. Had an unusual question prior to purchase - asking about the comparative thickness of the puzzle pieces vs older puzzles that were more durable. I am not qualified to answer that so I referred her to a jigsaw review site that reviews (but does not sell) different brands and rates them including Master Pieces puzzles.
The boxes were in better condition than I stated, as I prefer to under-promise and over-deliver. Master Pieces boxes (including these, are quite thick and strong and add a lot to the weight of the package)
What I sent
I wrapped them up in tissue and paper, then bound them together in heavier paper, then bagged them for waterproofing and to ensure no movement. Then packed them in a Priority large cube box and used air pouches to keep everything centered and unmovable. (I upgraded to priority because a snowstorm prevented me from shipping on time)
Delivered 8 days ago. Today I got a message saying that despite there being no damage whatsoever to the outer box, this is what arrived:
I'm hard-pressed to see how this horrendous damage could have occurred to the tightly wrapped and padded contents without any damage whatsoever to the outer Priority mail box. They look like somebody sat on them or ripped them.
The message by the way is accusatory and suggests that the very prospect that the pieces too might have been miscounted now raises another specter in her mind about my honesty.
I'm being asked to state whether I "have any knowledge of what happened here."
Thoughts?

Did you get a pic of the shipping box? That type of damage could happen without much visible on the outer carton.
In any event, you'll be taking a return and since you shipped Priority there is the included insurance you could file a claim.
If you are going the claim route you should advise the buyer to retain the package aan contents for examination by USPS if required.

They just didn't like them and its easier to destroy and return and get free shipping than to just say I don't like them and want to return them and pay postage. No one takes 8 days to inform a seller something arrived damaged most inform a seller within 1 hour of delivery...

Just my Opinion, but from what I can see it looks like someone tried to open them a bit so they could look inside to see what the puzzle pieces looked like.

Why would the buyer cooperate with an insurance claim?

Due to the selling price its a slam dunk win if you file a USPS damage claim online. They won't even bother at looking....

You are correct to be skeptical, but are in a difficult spot to do anything other than what you are being forced to do. That's unfortunate.

She says quite pointedly in her message that the outer box was "not damaged in any way" She did not send me a picture of it and I didn't photograph it before it left my hands.
NO I won't be taking a return or filing an insurance claim. I'm just going to refund her without asking for their return, tell her that I have no personal knowledge of what happened to the puzzles, and block her.

Damage to items can certainly occur without the outer box showing any sign of damage, but I believe that would depend on the items. Someone would have to demonstrate how these items could be damaged in that manner without the entire box being run over by a truck for me to believe it.

Which is probably exactly what she wants. 😞 Unfortunately, it seems there are scammers in every category.

Obviously I didn't mean the box as it was when you sent it!
"Taking a return" means giving a refund, doesn't matter if you actually require the physical return or not!
I don't understand why you would not take a few minutes to fill out an online claim form.

Oh, sorry. I misunderstood your question.
"Taking a return" means giving a refund, doesn't matter if you actually require the physical return or not!
Since all I have is a message, and at this point she has been refunded, there won't be any RETURN request opened. That's what I meant. Again sorry - I misunderstood you again! Yikes!
I don't understand why you would not take a few minutes to fill out an online claim form.
Fair enough. I've never filed an insurance claim with USPS, not in the almost 15 years I've lived here in the US. And back in Canada I did it only 3 times in forever, and the last time they tried to compensate me in postage stamps after 6+ months of fiddling around. So that kind of affected my disposition - even though obviously the USA is not Canada!
I assumed that it required some sort of cooperation at the receiving end and wasn't aware that you could do it online. If it DOES require the buyer's cooperation I think that's a non starter.
But I'll check out the USPS website and educate myself. Thank you!

No matter what happened, I would not recommend that as it will only embolden them the next time.
Forget keeping up with the Joneses. Be the Finklegrubers!
OK kids, time to get the Dodge loaded up again. I hear 'Poppy's By the Tree' calling. This trip might be a long one too.
