BUYER SCAM?

Sold an item this morning, on Seller Hub-Tasks it says " print shipping label" so I packaged item, printed the label and put it out for the mail, it was picked up.  This afternoon I logged into Paypal to transfer the money to my bank.  There was no money there.  It showed payment had been refunded.  I never got any notification from Ebay about the sale being cancelled or anything.  I called Paypal first, they said nobody from there did it, it must have been done on Ebays end.  So I called Ebay and talked to a person who wasn't very fluent in English, first they told me that my money was being held because I didn't have 72 orders yet, ( I'm serious, that's what she said!)  So I asked her why all of a sudden hold my money when they've never done it on any of my other transactions.  She says hold on for 2 minutes.  OK.  Then she comes back and said the buyer evidently contacted Paypal for the refund without going through Ebay and I should contact the buyer to see if they will pay since the item has already been shipped.  I know Ebay sends an email to the buyer when a shipping label has been printed.  It was an international sale to Canada if that makes any diference.  Any suggestions on how I should handle this?

There’s no way they could cancel or reverse a payment that fast if they used a card. It was probably an e-check. Did you check the PayPal transaction to see if it was an e-check? If it was, PayPal won’t eat this.

Re: BUYER SCAM?

Also, to add,  I wouldn’t think a buyer can reverse a charge made on an eBay purchase five minutes after making it. A buyer can’t call PayPal and reverse a charge on an eBay item. People would be shipping items all the time to fraud buyers if that were the case. There would be a process where the buyers bank would dispute the charge with PayPal first. Regardless, eBay told you to ship so you’re still covered because you shipped to the confirmed address.

Re: BUYER SCAM?

If it was an echeck then the op wouldn’t have gotten the ok to ship by eBay because it would take several days to clear.

No, Paypal will eat it.  The cardholder's bank has the ability to reach into Paypal's account and remove the money.  Just like Paypal can do to sellers.

eBay doesn’t always get it right and there is documented proof of both eBay and PayPal incorrectly telling sellers to ship when the buyer paid by an echeck that hadn’t cleared yet. This was a major problem last year actually.

This is weird then because if the buyer paid with a card and disputed it with their bank, you should have received a notification. Whether it was something through eBay or PayPal or a chargeback, you should have received a notification. I’ve read of this happening to other sellers recently but I don’t know if they figured out what happened 😞

Ok, I just off the phone with paypal. I got a better person this time. She told me:
payment made at 4:22 am PST
payment reversed at 4:28 PST
shipping label printed at 5:03 PST
So after more than 30 minutes after the payment had been reversed this was still showing up as "print labels and ship" which I did, and paid for a shipping label.
Oh the joys of selling on ebay!

Did Paypal say HOW the payment was reversed because I can't understand it.  Was it "reversed" by the credit card company, Paypal, or through eBay?  eBay has pretty strict (I thought) rules on cancelling a transaction once you've paid:

Canceling an order you've just made

If you've changed your mind about an order, you can cancel it within an hour of your purchase, as long as the seller hasn't dispatched it yet. Here's how:

  1. Go to Purchase history and find the order you want to cancel.
  2. From the More actions drop-down, select Cancel this order.
  3. Select Submit.

We'll send your request to the seller and ask them to confirm that they haven't sent the item yet. We'll then send a confirmation of cancellation to your registered email address, as well as to your Messages.

So, based on the above, it doesn't sound like the reversal was done by eBay.

I've heard of problems like this before, so I ALWAYS log into Paypal as I'm getting ready to print the label to confirm the funds are still there.  Probably a good precautionary step.

Good luck!

Re: BUYER SCAM?

A notification would have been nice. I received no notification whatsoever. I didn't know anything was going on until I logged into my paypal account about 9 hours later.

Re: BUYER SCAM?

Paypal told me that payment was reversed by the buyer 4 minutes after the original transaction. I guess maybe they called Paypal, I've never been able to talk to anyone at Paypal that quick.
