Hoping for some guidance here. I won an auction for a book with a seemingly reputable and well established seller with 100% feedback. I received the wrong item. When I messaged them to let them know I got this response:
I am so sorry to hear that! Please go ahead and request a return and we will get the process started on this.
Your satisfaction is our #1 priority. That is why we offer a free 30 day return for any purchases, for any reason! However, in order to avoid penalty by eBay, we respectfully request that you choose the following reasons for your return (whatever the issue may be)
Please select either: "Just didn’t like it" OR "Changed my mind" as your reason for return.
If you select those reasons you will not have any negative impact. We will still cover all costs for the return and you will receive your full refund as well.
If you select any other reason for return it may result in a negative impact on our account and be a hinderance to future business.
Is it in my best interest for "Buyer Protection" to process the return this way. I don't believe that choosing "Received the wrong item" as the reason for my return would negatively affect their account. They go to great length to say what I can do for them but only mentions a full refund for me. I really just want to receive the correct item that I won. When I asked them about this they replied that there is an investigation process to figuring out what happened. I really just want to know if anyone feels this is kind of weird to ask me to process the return this way. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Of course dont use the options for a remorse return,if the buyer responds to your received the wrong item return, it will not impact his account...unless he has been receiving too many snad complaints.

If your listing had Free Returns on it, you would be doing the seller a favor by selecting one of the remorse return reasons. Free Returns means the seller pays for return shipping no matter what the reason might be.
If in doubt, select Received the Wrong Item.

I do think that it is really unprofessional of them to ask this. EBay does keep track of returns that are not as described, wrong item, damaged etc. If a seller is considered to have a ‘very high’ amount of those types of returns they are penalized with higher eBay fees whether or not the claims are legitimate. However, that isn’t your problem as the seller did not send you the item you paid for. It really isn’t fair for them to ask you to change the reason for the return.
I do want to mention that if the seller really does offer free returns then they have to pay and accept your return regardless of the reason you put so giving a different reason won’t affect your return and refund. I’m not suggesting that you change your reason, just explaining how it works.

Per your message, you received the wrong item.
Why would you not use the appropriate reason for return: item not as described?
The seller is trying to get you to use a reason that would not affect him negatively.

DO NOT choose either of those reasons. If you do it puts the seller off the hook for return shipping.
Choose item not as described or received wrong item, however its worded

The seller wants you to choose a reason where they are not responsible for return shipping. Don't do it. Choose wrong item/ not as described. That way the seller pays for return shipping, as they should. You shouldn't have to be out any money for their mistake.
And they don't get a defect for returns if they resolve the return and eBay is not needed or asked to help.
