How long does a buyer have to request a return?

I guess I should rephrase this a little - how long does the buyer have to be granted a return? Here's an answer I found when I searched it here: "If they want a refund for buyer's remorse they should return it within 14 days". I really don't care what they should do. That's not an answer. I want to know when the system will no longer give them the option to return. There must be some limit to return an item. I don't want a customer to decide after 6 months they no longer want the item and they are allowed to return it. So, what's the actual answer.

@nicksvintageaudio

Ebay gives the buyer 30 days to file a claim.

Pay Pal and probably most credit cards give buyers 180 days to file a claim.

Have a great day.

Considering the price of your items i would suggest you consider accepting returns so that you get your item back prior to you needing to refund buyers

On eBay Seller  no returns does not mean no refunds

As previous post states 30 days to file return request with eBay

Re: How long does a buyer have to request a return?

most buyers are granted 30 days after delivery to ask for a return

a buyer can file for a return for a while after those 30 days are up but the return is different looking  and its safe to close them out and say no

30 days after the last estimated delivery date.

Paypal gives them plenty more.

Re: How long does a buyer have to request a return?

180 days! Will ebay step in and say to the credit card company "No. Our return policy is only 30 days. We will not issue a return on this item."? No store on the planet offers a 180 day return policy, and I've never heard of a CC company imposing their own "return policy" on a store. So essentially you are saying I have to wait 6 months to guarantee myself that the item is actually sold and the $$ is mine? That's insanity.

Yes, if the pay with Pay Pal or a credit card, they can file a claim for 6 months.

If they file with Pay Pal or their credit card, Ebay won't have anything to do with it.

Have a great day.

@nicksvintageaudio

Insane, but true. Any purchase you make, just about anywhere by credit card can be challenged for up to ~6 months. Some banks vary with a shorter timeframe.

Apparently you've never heard of a chargeback. The retail industry deals with this all the time and it's usually because the credit card holder didn't recognize the charge on their monthly statement and disputed the charge, requesting a refund (which forces the store to provide proof of the purchase).

Re: How long does a buyer have to request a return?

Hi @nicksvintageaudio

To be specific:

  • eBay allows 30 days from date of delivery to file a return request.
  • PayPal allows 180 days from date of purchase to file an 'item not as described' dispute.
  • Credit cards vary by bank.  There is no specific timeline.   [I think it's rare for any CC issuer to allow 6 months to request a return ... as opposed to reporting a non-delivery, which can be proven by lack of tracking info.

Nothing? They are the ones managing payments?

In a credit card chargeback or a PayPal dispute, which eBay collectively calls a Payment Dispute

1. eBay has nothing to do ... meaning eBay has nothing it can do.

2. Ebay won't have anything to do ... meaning eBay has not anything it can do.

Why? There's nothing/anything for eBay to do. If we think about it, and follow the money:

a. Buyer pays PayPal > PayPal pays eBay > eBay pays the seller.

Buyer files PayPal dispute, then PayPal has to handle the PayPal dispute.

eBay has nothing to do with the dispute ... nothing for eBay itself to do in the dispute (read it again).

Either the seller voluntarily refunds, or it is forced.

b. Buyer pays PayPal > PayPal pays eBay > eBay pays the seller.

Buyer files credit card chargeback, then PayPal has to handle the chargeback.

eBay has nothing to do with the chargeback ... nothing for eBay itself to do in the chargeback (read it again).

Either the seller voluntarily refunds, or it is forced.

c. Buyer pays Adyen > Adyen pays eBay > eBay pays the seller.

Buyer files Apple/credit/Google chargeback, then Adyen has to handle the chargeback.

eBay hasn't anything to do with the chargeback ... eBay won't have anything to do in the chargeback (read it again).

Either the seller voluntarily refunds, or it is forced.

That ... is the extent of managed payments:

eBay takes payments from PayPal and Adyen,

and eBay returns payments to PayPal and Adyen.

Buyers can use Paypal to pay for items. Therefore, a buyer has 180 days to file  return claim via Paypal.

It is sellers who do not use Paypal to receive a buyers payment.
