Customize on this page not "holding" change

velvet@ebay

On this page.........view other items from a listing page

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_ssn=dhbookds&store_name=dlhcollectibles&_dmd=2&_oac=1&_trksid=p2047...

I've used the customize option to change from gallery to list view.........  but that change doesn't "hold", on the next attempt it defaults back to gallery view............

I note they have made a change to show the store banner on this page, but somehow the customize feature for the list/gallery option got killed.  Looks like the options for picture size and the # of items per page still work properly........

Customize on this page not "holding" change

It appears that for sellers with a store, the "see other items" link in the seller's listing now directs users to a store page rather than the standard search results page, which may be why you are seeing a gallery rather than list view.

As a workaround, try going to the seller's feedback page and using the "view other items for sale" link there. That should provide the usual non-store list view.

If on the other hand you are actually having problems getting customized search results:

What browser are you using? Some are better than others when it comes to this sort of thing.

Try another browser. Try searching using keywords. From the search results page, change the settings on the page so it matches what you want to see. Then open the customization page and change that to match your chosen settings. Apply the changes and search again. If the settings do not match what you want, try again. Sometimes it takes a couple of rounds to make the changes stick.

Hi @dhbookds@eburtonlab gave some great suggestions and workarounds, but I wanted to check and see if this was something that stuck in the past and all the sudden stopped working, or is it something that has never stuck, and you are suggesting that change be made to the customization feature for searches?

I ask because I've never utilized that option and usually customizations like that don't stick past the current search it's being used on. Take the refinements you select to the left of the search screen for example. Once you enter a new search, those reset by design to let the buyer start fresh. I'm trying to determine if something is broken and I need to submit a ticket with our tech team, or rather this is an insight/suggestion I can pass on for further consideration.

It appears the operation of the "see other items" link in listings of sellers with stores has changed very recently.

Previously that link would go directly to a page like this:

https://www.ebay.com/sch/dhbookds/m.html

That page is still reachable using the "view other items for sale" link on the seller's feedback page.

For sellers with stores, the "see other items" link now goes to a page like this:

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_ssn=dhbookds&store_name=dlhcollectibles

Which is very similar to a standard gallery layout store page with a banner but also with a (nonworking) "customize" menu (nonworking at least as far as the list or gallery setting is concerned).

For users without a store, that "see other items" link still acts as it always has to provide the former link rather than something that looks like the latter.

Ah, thank you for the additional information @eburtonlab, I see what you are saying. I know we're trying to promote sellers Stores, so this appears to be an intentional change to do just that.

I don't believe they would make changes to save/remember customizations as that would become untenable; especially when you start to think about members trying to set up different customizations for different stores.

I think the best option @dhbookds is to view from the Feedback page as @eburtonlab suggested, or click the box to the right of the Sort feature and select 'List view'.

Hi velvet@ebay   I need to report some issues here too.  When I do Sold search research I typically get the List view (which I prefer) but then after a number of Searches it switches to Gallery, which is confusing considering my generation grew up on Menu driven programming and viewing ... meaning a LIST.

Some times there is a choice to switch the view back to List but other times there is no choice so I have to close the session and start over ...

There should be a default setting that sticks for a Member's preference.

I understand everything eburton has said and understand about looking at it different ways.......

But I'm afraid you are misunderstanding the customize feature.....it's there for a viewer (not a store) to customize the pages for several features..... sort order, size of pictures/# of listings per page/list or gallery view, etc.....for ALL pages permanently (or until changed) from what Ebay defaults are.   From what I can tell, once changed and applied.  all those features EXCEPT gallery or list view work that way permanently.  It has been permanent forever.....and if that has been changed deliberately so that the change is not permanent , then the option of choosing gallery or list should eliminated from the customize options.

I would really believe some change has killed that one option in the customize choices and ask that you contact either the Listing Page Team and/or the Stores team for an answer.  It's ludicrous to me that it would show one way from accessing  one page (feedback) and another way (from the listing page)........

Thanks

Edit.........I think Mr. Lincoln has expressed the problem well.

I don't have the same experience as you @dhbookds when using the customization option between multiple searches in a regular search screen, or in the store. Some things seem to stick while others don't, then the next time I look that can vary. If you need to reselect the list field only, then you can select that option from the box to the right of the Sort feature, knowing all of your other customizations are remembered. Ultimately though, the system isn't designed to keep all customizations remembered at all times, outside of a saved search.

I'm happy to have them dig in further as to the Feedback page, and why it still goes to the older list view, but my guess is they may have missed that one when updating these 'See other items' links to stores for sellers that have them.

doesn't that indicate that something is programmed incorrectly?.........  If you customize.......the results should be the same......that's the reason one uses customize..........to change the ebay defaults........and to keep them changed.

I've been here since 2004 and had list view in customize all that time.....or at least since they put the options in when they introduced gallery view and it's worked 99% of the time up until a day or so a go.  I will say occasionally it would show gallery....but that was changed as soon as the page was refreshed..........

I have only 1 customization......which includes list/plus the other stuff

To be clear, I'm not talking about saved searches...........I don't use them.  I'm talking about a general, one time search.

Sorry to be a pain......but it's a mistake that needs to be corrected and just changing the feedback link is not going to correct the customization problem.

I believe THAT is the problem. When using the "Customize Your Search" widget, which has been around a long time, once you select ANYTHING there and click apply, whatever you have selected is INTENDED to stick....from page to page, day to day, week to week, month to month, and so on. I believe that is how it has functioned for years.

I do not believe the inconsistency you are seeing is by design, I believe it is a glitch. It is not working as intended, and that is the problem. That is why you are being asked to report the problem to whichever team is responsible for the widget (or module, or whatever you call it).

@my-cottage-books-and-antiques, velvet@ebay   I think the glitch is deeper then that ... I don't use any filters nor do I use any features in Advanced Search nor the widget as mentioned.  I type what I am looking for in the Search window and click Search.  Most items are returned via the List format then if I make changes to keywords to try and get what I am actually looking for it will return Lists but out of the blue switch to Gallery ...

And as mentioned, sometimes there is the choice to switch from Gallery back to Lists and at other times there is NO choice to switch ... so as mentioned, I have to end the session - meaning I shut down the browser and restart it.

The returned Search format changes by itself, there is NOTHING I do on my end remotely related to how I want to view Search results ... it just changes.

I appreciate the additional information @dhbookds and @my-cottage-books-and-antiques. I assumed some things happened to be remembered rather than defaulting back by chance, with each new search, but I can see  why it would be nice for that search customization box to lock in a buyers selections. I've passed this on and we'll see what we can do to make that happen. Thank you!

Hi @mr_lincoln! I've tried to run multiple searches (over ten) and didn't have the experience you're describing with the list view changing to gallery. I also tried switching up the keywords in the same search over and over again (over ten) and nothing broke. How many searches are you running before you notice that it switches to the gallery view and you have to refresh the browser altogether?

Customize on this page not "holding" change

I believe I know exactly what’s happening here velvet@ebay. Please bear with me as this is a bit long. I've done my best to outline things to make it easier to follow.

Before the new store changes there were 2 options:

1. View listings in general search.

With this method you could customize all aspects of search view as shown in some of the screenshots above. These preferences were saved to your profile and constant - no matter what browser or device you used, your preferences would override any default eBay search settings.

2. View listings within a seller’s store.

Within a seller’s store you could change sort order and between gallery/list display, but your preferences were not saved. Sellers were able to set a default sort order and set a default gallery or list view. The seller’s store settings would override any default eBay settings and any buyer’s preferences when you entered their store.

Recently a lot has changed about stores.

There are now 3 options to view a seller’s listings.

1. View listings in general search.

This is still possible through the seller’s profile and FB pages or through eBay advanced search by seller. When you view listings this way, your preferences for things such as gallery/list and sort order will continue to override any default eBay search settings.

2. View listings within a seller’s store.

The ability for sellers to set a default sort order and set a default gallery or list view for stores was revoked from the manage stores page. Now all stores default to best match sort and gallery view.

3. **NEW** View listings in general search with a seller’s store banner at the top. I’ll call it “store search” go forward in this discussion.

As of today there are 2 ways to access this store search view. One is from within the seller’s store when you scroll to the bottom of the store page and click “see all.” Two is brand new as @dhbookds discovered: from within a listing and clicking on see other items.

These are observations (and some apparent errors) with the NEW store search view.

The sort order is defaulting based on 2 criteria, both of which are outdated:

     1. The sort order that sellers set on the manage store page - the one that was removed as mentioned above.

     2. The display (gallery/list) that sellers set on the manage store page - the one that was removed as mentioned above.

It’s clear from my informal testing of viewing several different stores, including my own, that eBay is defaulting store search to a seller’s OLD/inaccessible store settings.

From here the question is what SHOULD be happening?

1. Should eBay be defaulting store search to both gallery and best match the same way stores are defaulted?

2. Should eBay be defaulting store search to a buyer’s customized preferences the same way general search is defaulted?

eBay needs to make this decision, then make changes. They should not leave the set up as-is because it’s based on store settings that are no longer accessible and will be different for every store - a very inconsistent shopping experience.

Users in this thread clearly would like option 2 over option 1. I have to agree with them. The buyer search customization settings are present within store search. Because of this, eBay should be defaulting to those settings.

This is different from the general store where those customization settings are not available. With new stores, the only thing buyers can change within a store view is sort order - they cannot even change gallery vs list.
