Did you mean:

every day is April 1 on Ebay - October seller category changes

So all the postcard categories will be rolled into 2 categories?  Is that correct?

Postcards 262041
Topographical Postcards 262042
Non-Topographical Postcards 262043

Yes. And there's nothing we can do about it. I already told them my opinion of that. I only hope this doesn't lead to less sales.

I don't think anyone navigates with categories but they add important key words to the title. Now you're going to have to add "Rhode Island" AND "RI" to a listing title to get all interested buyers. There just won't be enough character spaces in the title for things like RPPC Horse Drawn Wagon Meat Store Jewish Anytown PA Pennsylvania Real Photo 1918 Postcard etc etc.

Re: every day is April 1 on Ebay - October seller category changes

Maybe this will simplify things but to your point I'm probably not going to add PENNSYLVANIA or MASSACHUSETTS to the listing.

I've never once heard collectors or dealers refer to Topographical /non-Topographical.

"And what kind of cards do you collect?"

"Well, my grandmother loved non-Topographical postcards and after I inherited her non-Topographical collection I started collecting them too."

"Well I keep all my non-Topographical on the left side of the table, and on the right side of the dotted line are all the Topographical postcards in case you want to look at those too."

Re: every day is April 1 on Ebay - October seller category changes

Right, you can tell that whoever did these changed had no idea of how postcard dealers and collectors organize or even think about postcards. These categories are essentially meaningless now. For pete's sake at least have categories for the individual states and one for real photo postcards. IMO they already went too far a few years ago when they removed the categories for individual holidays. Sure nobody collects thanksgiving postcards but at least separate hot topics that people actually seek out like Santa and Halloween.

I haven't seen  this change but it doesn't sound good. Just today I was talking to a friend that use to sell on EB and his theory is they are doing everything to get rid of the category's that are inconvenient to them. He may be right. Off to see what other changes there are

Re: every day is April 1 on Ebay - October seller category changes

A similar change was made to the Holiday & Seasonal Category about six months ago.  All the holidays were a separate category, subdivided into antique, vintage, or modern.  EBay wiped all that out.  The new categories are

Advent Calendars
Candle Holders
Candles
Cards & Postcards
Christmas Trees
Costumes
Figurines
Incense Smokers
Lanterns
Lights
Masks
Nativity Items
Noisemakers
Nutcrackers
Ornaments
Props
Pyramids
Snow Globes
Stockings & Hangers
Table Décor & Serving Piece
It has made it impossible to browse through antique Christmas items.   There are new "item specifics," but sellers don't know how to date an old greeting card, so in the item specific "time period," most of them are described as unknown.  Under the "item specific" - "subject" you can identify your item as belonging to these descriptors - Subject

The result has been listings in "holiday & seasonal" have plummeted.   Who wants to list a potentially highly sought item when no one can easily see it.

I suspected someone spiked the water cooler with LSD.  Seriously??  Yoga Frog????

Re: every day is April 1 on Ebay - October seller category changes

I think if ebay wanted to get rid of a category, they would just do it.

I think it is just corporate nudnicks - salaryman has to show he did something on their annual PDP and this was their assignment: "simplify" the categories.  Maybe their offshored databases just can't handle more than 2 categories.

Re: every day is April 1 on Ebay - October seller category changes

Could ebay have intended to mean Topicgraphical vs NonTopicgraphical?

Topographical seems to refers to surfaces, as in maps, when I browse my dictionary.

More the more I (try not to) think about this the more absurd and damaging it is.

It is not necessary to include a keyword specifically in the limited title space of a listing to make that listing findable using that keyword; as long as the keyword appears anywhere as an item-specific in that listing it will allow the listing to be found when searching using that keyword, provided that the listing otherwise meets the other search requirements.

Re: every day is April 1 on Ebay - October seller category changes

If this goes the same way as Holidays/Collectables-greeting cards you're going to have about 212 "item specfics" to review and select, including such complete nonsense specifics as "Yoga Frog" and "Bacon Bandage."

After all this time, it seems eBay still has no understanding of some of their categories and no interest in listening to people who do.
