eBay Forcing you to give your checking account with routing number and Social Security number

Forcing you to give your checking account with routing number and Social Security number . I am not a big seller I just sold a few things I never used that I had then eBay locked my account AFTER selling some stuff saying I had to update my account. I refused to give my private information. I called eBay and of course I was tossed around from one person to another. I asked them why PayPal doesn’t ask you that kind of private information they allow you to use your bank card like a credit card and do two small deposits with one withdrawal to verify. If you are a business they only require your EIN number.  Never do they ask you for your private information. Brittany from eBay the last woman I was talking to said well PayPal is a Financial company and a eBay is a market place. Ok so that supposed to make me feel comfortable giving Them my private information? That is supposed to tell me it’s Secure to do so? I had to ship the stuff I sold to the people because I’m not a jerk but eBay won’t give me my money. I told Britney I was deleting my account she sent me the link. Once I know the people received what they purchased ( because I’m honest)  and want to make sure they got it even though it cost me money. I WAS a victim of fraud twice. My SS# was stolen and it ended up freezing my tax returns and the second time I had my bank account drained. I was told by the police to NEVER give your SS # out other than in person and never give your routing # out unless it’s in person or a government site which have very high security and Only if you need to exp: direct deposit tax return. I have never given it out since. There is NO good reason eBay needs that. They have documentation they took the sales tax out. Personally I think anyone that got ripped off by eBay and they will not give them their money back need to get together and sue eBay.

Back in 2011/2012 you were required to give it to PP because of new IRS rules regarding 1099Ks.

Let me know if you want more information.

Well, when you're opted into MP, you WILL give them your SSN or quit selling here. Simple as that. I don't think anyone here really cares what decision you make. Sellers come, sellers go.

eBay lost me as a seller.   I just got the MP notice.  There is no way in hell I'm allowing eBay to dip into my checking account.    I don't do autopay on anything, no one has privileges to initiate a debit from my account without my explicit approval.   Everything is an ACH payment that I initiate from my end of the transaction.

I'll continue to buy on eBay but selling will go to groups.io and facebook yard sales for the hobby items.   20 year member with 100% reputation.

The business model for eBay is changing, but I don't have to.

Good day everyone.

There are many of us that will follow the herd on many things, but MP is a different kind of pasture that not all of us sellers are willing to step into for reasons that are our own... and those reasons allow us to make whatever decisions we so choose, and are choices we ourselves must make in the best interests of our online selling going forward.

Weird that the OP never has commented back to the thread they started and the thread is like the energizer bunny. I reckon it is like that with a lot of threads.   Just sayin'

@coffeebean832

"The government is the one that requires eBay to collect this info so they can verify your identity and issue 1099 forms as required. You gave the information to PayPal at one point- this is essentially the same thing".

Wrong. stop putting out false information on the community boards or commenting on what  you seem to have a lack of knowledge on. SSN only required on payouts $20k  or over, or at least 200 transactions in a previous year  Processor PSE required to file 1099-K and remit. This Nonsense is heading to a court challenge, in the appropriate jurisdiction. eBay better get it's fact straight.

@coffeebean832 is not wrong.  Sites like PP, Amazon, MP/Ebay, etc. can't wait until the seller has reached the threshold for a 1099K and then start chasing them for their SSN.  That would be labor intensive for the site and if the seller didn't provide it to them in time the site would have penalties to pay to IRS.  Which is why IRS wants money processors to collect SSNs up front.

You will have to add PP and many other sites to that list too.  We all had to give PP our SSN back in 2011/2012 when IRS created the 1099K.

I have an answer for eBay, NO. Here is my situation.  I will only be selling on eBay for another 2  or 3 months. I have a few big ticket items that I don't want to sell on Craig's list or my neighborhood blog. So I will include a SS # and a bank account with $50 in it and remove any money out of it as soon as it appears.  I refuse to allow eBay to access a bank with money in so they can take money out at will and I am the one who decided where PayPal sends my money, not eBay. I will not give eBay that freedom. So after 23 years as a power seller and top rated seller with 100% positive feedback and a near perfect record, it's good bye to eBay as a seller. I may buy a few things but I will never sell another thing after March of 2021.  Charging a surcharge on way too high shipping should have done it. Forever encouraging sellers to lower their prices should have done it. But I stuck in there. This time I will not stay.  jj

We have had a FVF on Shipping for YEARS.  That isn't something new.

There is much concern by many sellers about MP being able to access and pull money from the checking account attached.  If they were to pull money it would be to fund your MP account because it was in a negative balance, likely because of a buyer return request or chargeback.  So if one of your buyers files for a return or chargeback on one of those high end items, that could be an issue for you.

MP does allow for setting up a back up funding source using a charge card, if that is something that you might like to do.

I wish you the best and hope that everything works out well for you in whatever you decide to do.

You basically don't sell anymore anyway. One $5.00 item in 2 months or more. Probably not a big loss for eBay. Good luck to you elsewhere.

I have a problem with them wanting me to LOG ON from the ebay site into my checking account.  I logged on to my paypal site from ebay bc they are basically the same company and bc paypal is not my bank and only controls whatever amount I have in the account.  I don't feel comfortable with ebay having access to my bank account.  They will surely mess that up like everything else they mess up with no responsibility.

Why does ebay Manage payments require you to log on from their site.  Isn't it enough for them to have your bank account number to send and receive payment from your bank.  I'm just uneasy with having to give my log in info from a platform that is not provided by my bank.
