The new managed payments

I'm doing my level best to figure out just how the new managed payments is an advantage for sellers. For buyers? Most certainly. For ebay? Absolutely. But for sellers? Ummm..... ppffttt

I have less than 2 weeks to decide whether or not I  will continue to use ebay as a selling platform. I hate to give it up after 20 years here, but it might be goodbye for me.

The new managed payments

Well, you've hit the nail on the head with "better for buyers."  Absolutely, the more ways we give buyers to pay, the better.  AND, I think that paying in a more seamless manner is a better experience - it does seem odd to have to go through the PayPal site to pay.

That's really what it comes down to - the rest of it doesn't really matter.  Yes, I like MP, but I didn't loathe PayPal.  Principled stands are great - I don't tell anyone what their comfort level should be.  eBay offers you a deal - if you take it, great, if not, then that is the right decision for you.  Me, with any change, I like to look at the deal that is presented, not thinking about what it was like twenty years ago, and go from there.  Yes, I do miss the days when anything and everything sold easily, and those days when I could pack profits into the shipping and handling charge, free and clear of the FVF's from eBay.  And, yes, I miss the days when buyers couldn't really push back on what was sent to them.  I even miss the days of receiving cash in the mail - not all buyers wanted to go through the trouble of getting a money order.

From my seller side, I like MP for the following:

- Partial refunds for shipping discounts is easier

- I like having a weekly payout (but you can choose daily) - I don't really mind not having too many PayPal transactions to sort through; I still use PayPal, so it is nice to have a cleaner activity page, devoid of the multitude of eBay user payments

- I like the money going direct to a bank account - no more of that evil PayPal earning interest off of my money 🙂

- I like that postage fees are deducted from my pending funds

- I like that I can more easily see a rough picture of weekly profitability

- Theoretically, I like that I have one less layer of potential dispute arbiters; used to be (rarely, I'm sure) that a buyer could file a claim with eBay, then PayPal, then their CC company; now, if a buyer isn't using PayPal, you don't have to worry about that dispute, and that 180 day window (isn't that nice?!)

For me, the delay in payouts isn't an issue.  Sure, I suppose that the instant gratification of PayPal was nice, but it provides a false sense of security.  That money isn't really yours - free and clear - for six months.  To think that you should not have a float for potential/eventual issues is madness.  Life happens - damaged in transit, stinky buyers, mistake in the listing leading to an INAD, etc..  Oh, and regular sellers should be holding back money for taxes.  If MP forces some discipline in selling, all the better.

The new managed payments

IMHO it's not an advantage or a disadvantage. It's just different.

In a nutshell you, will need to:

a) accept that PayPal will no longer be an option for receiving payments

b) create a bank account for eBay to use, if you do not already have one

c) understand that fees will be taken immediately from buyer payments (like PayPal does)

d) take a half-hour to read about (and set up) how managed payments will work

e) understand that will take 2-6 days for the money to be available in your bank account

It's not that hard or scary. After I created my bank account, I converted 6 selling accounts over in a couple hours and I have had no issues whatsoever.

The new managed payments

Other than avoiding selling high priced electronics that on-line criminals focus on I can only guess what effect mangled payments will have on my store.  I anticipate higher sales and profits resulting without knowing how many shoppers like using G-Pay.

There is a choice song from 'The Sound of Music' for these types of situations when someone announces so dramatically that they might leave ebay.

For me the decision took a while but I am signed up now and am in a holding pattern.  I get the benefit of 10,000 extra listings in my core category while ebay figures out what they are doing about processing coin sales before they activate us.

Thanks for the replies folks. I think more than anything, it IS simply the change that seems to take away options and protections for sellers. However, just the few replies I have will make me take another look-see.

My post wasn't just a reason to whine. It really wasn't.

The new managed payments

I have had MP for all of 2021, so over a year. Unless you are REALLY high volume it does not save you much of anything. At first I had it set for deposits to my bank every day. Too many deposits to keep track of. Once a week is perfect

Luckythewinner is right, it is just different. I hated it at first but because I like a lot of people do not like a lot of change. You can get use to it and it really is not bad.

On a selfish note I had all my payments till then ran through a credit card and racked up a lot of airplane miles I will no longer get. But in the end it is not that bad

Now if eBay can find 1 report I could run that matches a 1099K I would be ecstatic. Trust me when I say I have run them all. I am hoping the tweaking they are doing to MP will do that

I am curious how many people are paying via Google-Pay, though, since that appears to be the only addition so far.

And Apple Pay.  I wouldn’t think that, combined, those payment methods account for 3% of sales.

Just as an aside, with no substantive bearing on this thread, Apple Pay is only shown to those using the appropriate device. I use a non-Apple device for accessing eBay, so I'm not offered Apple Pay.

You wrote ---"For me, the delay in payouts isn't an issue.  Sure, I suppose that the instant gratification of PayPal was nice, but it provides a false sense of security.  That money isn't really yours - free and clear - for six months."

Using PayPal didn't have the instant gratification that you seem to think it does.

For one: unless you have the PayPal debit card you have to transfer money to your bank.

Second: the transfer of money between PayPal and your bank took anywhere from 2 days to 5 days. (Same with transferring from bank to PayPal.)

That is hardly "instant gratification".

Managed Payments = when I get notice that my payout is sent, my payout is in my bank account same day.

@clanewen

Your post didn't come off as whiney at all... and we've read through plenty. You're being honest and humble. Kudos.

I am a small seller who's been here for about a decade-and-a-half, and I, too, like eBay as a platform. I opted into MP during the Fall of 2019, and it took me nearly a whole quarter to adapt. It's doable. Good luck to you.
