Hello-
I received an email from Ebay stating that after 6 years selling here, I needed to verify my personal info.
Ebay wants a copy of my drivers license and a copy of my bank statement. I have sent this info twice and after the second time, was told by customer service they needed to know the monetary amounts of my private purchases. I find it very disconcerting that Ebay wants to know how much money I have in my personal account, where I spend it and how much I spend. I have never been asked to disclose this info before. Usually a copy of a bank statement with acct numbers and bank info (i.e. bank address and phone number) is sufficient. I am beginning to wonder if this is legal. Has anyone else received this email? Does anyone know if they can legally ask for this info? I'm not sure how to proceed from here. Any advice would be helpful.
Thank you,
Michelle

@snowcakevintage You should ask those questions on the Weekly discussion (Wednesdays at 4 PM EST). What you have in your bank accounts is none of their business ...

In my humble opinion, and for what it's worth... "they needed to know the monetary amounts of my private purchases" and "Ebay wants to know how much money I have in my personal account" are two different requests.
I think they're asking for receipts for the items you have listed/sold. (They'd just laugh and laugh at the amount in my personal account.) Have you tried providing those?

My personal bank account has NO ebay deposits or withdrawals. (I haven't had sales in months) I don't understand why they want to know how much I spend at the grocery store or a doctors office since it has nothing to do with ebay.

I agree. It is very confusing.

I too don't know why they need that, but I've seen this same complaint by other sellers. It makes no sense to me either.
But I can answer why you are asked to verify your identity after 6 years of selling. It is because Ebay is trying to get you registered for MP [Managed Payments]. Ebay will now be your money processor and sellers can no longer use PayPal.
The following links are very informative and easy to read. Lots of great information in these articles that contain information you should be aware of. After you read them you will likely have questions. Come on back and ask whatever you need to.

In Australia we had to let eBay sign in to our bank account with our PIN - only took a couple minutes - verifired and then we all changed our password - nothing nefarious happened but it was very concerning at the time as you can imagine.
As strange as it may seem eBay is requiring the copy of your bank account, if you don't want them to have it, open a check account for eBay only.
I honestly don't know why people are upset by this to be honest, I have absolutely nothing in my bank statements that could be of any use to anyone by just looking at them.
I understand privacy but eBay knowing I spent $376 this fortnight on groceries is of no concern to me at all.
