We are on hiatus ourselves these days so I can feel for you. Not that we don't want to indulge in our train hobby, just that there have been too many things getting in the way of it. We have decided to put the train room upstairs, so this means we have so much to do in order to do that. Most of the stuff is put away now and what little is out, will have to go away for an unknown amount of time. Ed has been having some health problems, most are being taken care of, but they take up alot of time. The outdoor work is out of control, my son is leaving for Iraq next month so we spend a great deal more time on/with family, the bathrooms are now priortity-not vanity for remodel, the dog died yesterday, and so on and so on. And we are only two people that don't have as much free time to get it all done.......and have hobbies! I really need a magic wand to get some of the house stuff done so we can have some HOBBY time soon! SSSOOOOOOO, sell it, keep it, or do we store it for the time being? We still "play" with the trains all the time on the pathetic test track. I am getting tempted to just put scenery on that and be happy but who wants to see a train going in ovals all the time!!!??? I have total empathy for you Pete. Of course I would say put it on hold for awhile until you are totally sure of what you want to do. You always seem to come back to your railroad when you have these thoughts! Good LUCK!

Re: Retiring.......maybe

If you switched to N scale, you wouldn't have to burn yourself out trying to superdetail everything. HO would be happy medium for detail, and sound and space. Or just step back and work on other hobbies. Eventually the desire comes back. RIght now my N stuff is taking back seat to some much needed car modelling. You need to be a magzine editor where you write the book on building and decorating Peter's Gulch RR. Then tear it down and make a new book, as it seems you're always happy coming up with ideas and building them. Do some research and get into N or HO and model RR in NFLD in its heyday. Move to winnipeg or australia and get into modern diesels with Barry and me. Get into wine making.

Re: Retiring.......maybe

I can't wait for the wine to age anymore. I want it now! Remember when I sold off my 50 year collection of N scale? Why would I want to invest those thousands of dollars again. I have HO for the tree layout and even that is not of interest to me right now. I spent last night tossing and turning trying to decifer what was really bothering me about the rr andI think I figured it out. Too much track! Spaghetti bowl effect. Now I don;t want to tear it all down again, but I might have figured out how to eliminate the double tracking and go to a single track with passing sidings. Problem has always been not enough real estate for scenery with so much trach running along the narrow shelves. I'm working on the problem guys. Dot, sorry to hear the puppy died. I know you were not exactaly fond of Ed's dog, but a loss is a loss and I'm sure you feel it too. Meanwhile, I might build a ship if I can get the work bench clear of the brewery project...... Yes, I know about the waiting for the several hundred bottles of wine to age. I have however, been able to sample a few bottles and am enjoying the aging process finally. Had a couple over recently and we went through several bottles of a few types. NOONE complained! So long as I keep up with a new one or two each month all will be fine! The whites were more ready and the one red that has aged for several months was coming to. I am still working on the apricot from the book that Pete gave me. It is starting to get there. For some reason, it is taking alot of time. I won't give up on it.

Re: Retiring.......maybe

Ugh, in my case I tend to keep everything even as my interests ebb and flow. Pete, maybe some more ideas will present themselves like the double track thoughts. Dot, I use a figure 8 test track, a little more interest than a plain oval.... Charles

Re: Retiring.......maybe

Well I spent most of yesterday just looking at the track plan I have and finally decided that there is just too much track. Right now it is double tracked with one branch line going off to one side. Frankly, for the shelf space, this is an around the walls layout, the tracks are too close together and it just looks like a freeway with four tracks side by side in some sections. Rat's nest! Spaghetti bowl! Yuck!!!! So I decided to rip up most of the double tracking and create a single mainline with thee passing sidings instead. One passing siding is existing so I just have to add four switches to create the other two. The end result will be at most three tracks side by side, but with greater space between the mains, only in the area of one passing zone and two tracks the rest of the way. This will give me much more open space for scenery and structures, but mostly scenery. I have ordered the needed switches and will save most of the track that I rip out. It isn't ballasted yet for the most part. I'll need to buy a bit more cork roadbed. I'll be sacrificing one scratch built wood deck bridge though. Maybe I can sell it you know where. I'll have to take a look at the rolling stock and engines too. Maybe I have too much now. Operation will be more realistic with this set up. I'll have to stay on my toes when running more than one train......just like the real thing. Maybe the fun is coming back.......slowly. B-)

Re: Retiring.......maybe

I spent all day in the train room AKA basement. As I said before I thought I would take up a lot of the dual track and add a couple of passing sidings instead. Well, I did one today. I haven't torn up all the unused track yet, but now I am down to a single mainline and running just two trains is a real challenge. Just what I wanted. After test running, I think I will need that third passing siding if I want to run more than two trains. Three should be a real challenge on a single mainline. A little more prototypical. I still have the option for continuous running if I just want to railfan. Maybe I'll actually get back to that brewery....... Gotta go cut the grass now. B-)
