Anybody want some really good O scale stuff? Buildings, locomotives, passenger and freight cars, DCC system, craftsman kits, figures etc? TheBurnedOutFadda

I need some input from all the experts in this group. Take a look at the pictures in the album entitled New Track? I am trying to decide if I want to salvage the second wood trestle and create a passing siding with it or just bite the bullet and tear it out. Right now there are four tracks running on that narrow shelf. The Front track and the third track will stay. The back track nearest the wall is coming out. I was going to tear out the second track too so there would be only two tracks runing on that area. Kim says I should save the bridge. There is no other place to put it on the layout ifI take it out. I could use it to create a passing siding, but in reality, railroads built as few trestles as possiblebecause they cost a lot of money and maintainance. If that bridge were out my rock work behind it would be more visible too. Once more. My intent with all this reworking of the tracks is to create a single mainline with more scenery. Is the creation of a siding just to save the trestle worth it? Your input will be appreciated. SmileyCentral.com

don't lose the tressle, just find a new place for it to live, maybe put in a cutting with the tressle crossing it but closer to the front of the layout, maybe somewhere that just has a bit of strait track, I have seen a lot of tressles used with a stone cliff directly behind them that way you wouldn't have to drasticly change the setup for track.Just a thought. ]:)

What you have looks good, this is the idea I was thinking about but with only one track crossing a cutting in a new location with the cliff behind again, my other comment was made before I checked the album. ]:)

Pete, There isn't too much you can do with the far track area if it is torn out. It looks to be too close to the slope of the backdrop. Now I definitely am no expert when it comes to track but I would think that you would gain more scenery area to work with by just leaving the near track with the bridge and the far track and get rid of the two inner tracks and the wooden bridge. That would leave a lot of room in the middle for a "gulch town" mill or mine. It is a shame to do away with that beautiful bridge but that would be my suggestion. The rear track is history! Now there is room for some scenery behind the track on the cliff. I mocked up a couple of turnouts and track to show you all what the passing siding might look like, but damn Groups is soooo sloooooow that the pictures will not load. I'll try later. Meanwhile, I might have come up with a new location for the second trestle. It will mean cutting out a bit of existing scenery and trying to stuff 10 pounds of "..it" into a 5 pound bag, but it might work. You will see the location if I can ever get the pictures to post. B-) The Destroyer PS: When you finally get to see the pictures, remember that any second track line will be gone. Especially at the new location of the "paper" trestle. You'll see what I mean.......soon. -- Edited by ginzokid at 06/19/2008 10:35 AM PDT

OK The pictures finally posted. Meanwhile......I took out the trestle and all the double track this afternoon. I'll have to take some more pictures now, but not until tomorrow. I'm bushed for today. I have to make somemore rocks now for the gorge behind the lone trestle. If I put the second trestle where I have shown you, it will be a see through into the "pit" beyond. Might be "Kool" looking after all. Ever heard of "Eagle's Nest"? Stay tuned for a future project or "how to hide a column". TheCodFadda rides again!!!!!

Boy did I ever get started on something! I knocked out what used to be a perfectly good rock retaining wall and put in the shorter wood trestle that I took out of the gorge. I had to modify the track plan and shorten the trestle. It's in place temporarily. You can see it and a few other places in my new album, "Shiloh Valley Tour". PS: The pictures were sharp and in focus. The ebay album has corrupted them all. Darn! I wonder what's wrong now? PPS: I just discovered that once you open the thumbnail and go to the picture, you can click on it again and it will get a little larger and a little sharper. I guess that's the best we can expact from the groups. B-) -- Edited by ginzokid at 06/20/2008 9:58 AM PDT -- Edited by ginzokid at 06/20/2008 10:04 AM PDT

Pete, Thanks for the tour of the Shiloh Valley! It is great. It was fun going through the pictures and reading the captions. That's a nice railroad, thanks for showing us your work and giving us a little story too! Great stuff, thanks, Charles

It sorely needs some greenery! I didn't show much of the village either. It's a work in progress.

Pete you should get into live steam. Not only real sound and live action but you could ride on it as well. A guy at work is right into it. He bought a lathe to machine his own parts, he sent me links, a company even makes SD40,GP35,sw7,sw1500.

No live steam for me. You guys should read the review of the live steamer in Model Railroad News this month. It will definitely deter anyone from live steam on a small scale. Confuser is working and I'm learning the fine points of my new Adobe Photoshop. Still don't get notofication of incoming emails though. Hmmmmmmmm...... B-)

Well,it's killing me, but I have decided to sell off all my On30 stuff. I have been sending Jack pictures of the completed model structures that he will try to help me sell through a hobby shop in Ottawa. The unbuilt kits, rolling stock and locos I'll list on ebay. I have finally realized that I just don't have it in me to finish such a large undertaking. I still have plans for a small N scale layout but it will be DC only. I'll probably miss the sound at first, but I do have a small MRC sound unit that at least will blow whistles, ring bells and chuff syncronized with the DC throttle. So if anyone knows someone interested in On30 equipment and an NCE 5 Amp Power Pro system, look for my auctions. TheBackToNFadda

Pete, Walthers new flyer states that August is when the 2882 WITH sound will be released and sound will work in either dc or dcc. There are some options in N for sound. The new Model Railroader also has an ad for Soundtrax. Gene

I'm sorry but sound in N scale is a big joke. Everything sounds "tinny" because of the small speakers. I have heard enough of them to know. With the under the table speakers I use the sound is BIG even in DC. And since the new layout will be small the sound will be sufficient. Also, any DC/DCC engine uses up most of the DC power just to get the sound going and that leaves little throttle left for speed control. Trust me on this. If a decoder equipped engine is used, it is just plain nuts not to use a DCC power system. It's a total waste of the potential of the engine and the purpose of the decoder. I'm going back to DC only with small steam locos. That Mallet is too big for my plans. B-)

Welcome back to N scale, or something like that... The main idea is to enjoy the hobby for sure! Be sure to use some good speakers with a sub-woofer so you can get the full effect of the MRC sound. Sounds like someone in O scale should benefit once your work goes on sale. Charles
