I lost an auction today that I have held the high bid for THREE STINKING DAYS. Also I wasn't near my max bid. With ONE MINUTE left this **bleep** with a 4 feedback rating comes in bids enough to hit my max. Then bids ONE DOLLAR over my max to win and with no time for me to rebid. I saw another auction site that combated sniping by add 5 minutes to the auction if someone bid with a minute or less left in the auction. I don't remember how many times they would do it. Here's my idea: Add five minutes anytime there is a bid or bids in the last two minutes of the auction. Also add "Snip-bot" detection software as well as bans for serial snipers.
What do y'all think of my idea? Tell me. Right I am seething over this, the seller isn't answering my message, and I reported it to Ebay who agreed it looked extremely suspicious and are going to investigate. However the Ebay rep. said the sniper has already paid for the item. GRRR. >.<

I wish this reply could automatically be posted every time someone complains about being outbid near the end of an auction.

Why in the world would the seller answer you? So he can renege on his contract with the winner, take a hit for that, and then be nice and give the item to you, instead of the person with the highest bid?
The CSR was undertrained, overworked, and without authority and so told you what you wanted to hear to get you to go away.
You lost because you were outbid. Simple as that. End of story. If it makes you angry, direct that anger at the person responsible -- you.

Oh thank you!
Somebody here loves me!!!
I don't understand bidders who do NOT snipe...
Maybe I should change my user name to sniper...😁

Sniping is a defensive tactic that is the best single defense against shilling sellers. You have no need and no right to know anything about my bid to be able to bid effectively. If you can't decide your true maximum to bid in 7 days why do you believe you will do a better job in 5 minutes while in an emotional state over being outbid?
eBay's auction format is what makes it fair to those in up to 24 timezones with different work/sleep/computer schedules. Anyone can bid what the item is worth to them at any time and anyone can set up with a third party (there are reliable and secure ones which offer free limited use) to submit that bid in the last few seconds to get the defensive benefits of not having one's hidden maximum out there for others (again, including shilling sellers) to probe or otherwise base their bids on. Making it so those who are able to be there to react at the end have the advantage is unfair.

You sir are part of the problem and obvious you have little or no ethics..
You don't get to tell someone they have no ethics because they agree with sniping. Well, you can I suppose but then we get to tell you sniping has nothing to do with ethics and you are wrong to tell someone they're not ethical because they do what eBay allows.
SHEESH,, Where's the buBBLe gum.

When you bid $50.49, you became the leader at $31.02, not $50.49. When someone bid $36.78, eBay made you the leader at $37.78. When someone bid $50, eBay used the rest of your max bid to keep you in the lead. You seem to understand that. So even if the winner had bid $100, eBay would still make them the leader at $51.49, not $100. You seem to NOT understand that.
Please explain why.

Well, yes, that's eBay's clear and concise table showing the history of bid amounts and the times those bids were entered.
How much did you really, really want or need that Thing you were bidding on?
Would you possibly have paid as much as $55.00?
Can you accept the fact that "w***6" also really wanted or needed the Thing as much as you did?
Can you accept the fact that "w***6" maybe had more money in his pocket than you did?
Apparently -- no. You have shown everybody on this community board that you cannot accept the fact that somebody else won and you lost. That kinda makes you a sore loser, now, doesn't it?
What you found yourself in was a bidding war. Somebody wins and somebody loses.
For somebody with the years of experience on eBay that you state you have -- you sure don't understand the rules of this game. See that sentence in your last post, the one in blue type and is underlined, that says "Learn more about bidding"? Maybe you should click on it and read it. You might learn something.
And you are rude. Malcriado.

The final bid was placed at 5:32:33 and then the auction ended at 5:33:52, which was one minute and 19 seconds later. IMHO that's leisurely lead time which would have allowed reactive bidding and thus doesn't even count as sniping.
Anyway, as the others have said, (1) the winning bid always shows as one bid increment above the second-highest bid; the winner's full hidden proxy bid could have been much higher; and (2) the best way to win auctions is to place the highest bid. Just bid as much as you're willing to pay, regardless of how much others have bid.

If the OP REALLY wants to be a sore loser they can take a look at the completed listings below...
Ya could have had it @ $18.99...this item was listed the previous week and had ZERO bids - OUCH!!!

That's a nice piece of research! Every once in a while I get the urge to invite the original seller into one of these conversations.

What no one seems to get is that I WAS LIVE WATCHING THE AUCTION and it was 50.49 then 51.49 then auction closed. It SHOWS a minute and a half but it was much, much faster. I am using a high powered Alienware laptop its one year old has an i9 processor so it wasn't my equipment. I did not have time to react. But as no one is listening that the auction was manipulated. Rather I am told I am stupid, cheap, a poor loser etc. For the record I was trying to bid $100 but auction had ended. Everything is my fault so I am deactivating my Ebay account. I have decided to campaign for government regulation for Ebay. There's too much shady anymore. When its okay to sell toilet paper for $100+ during a pandemic something needs to be done. There is an awful lot of fake and bootleg items. My sister collects Unstable Unicorns most all of the card listed on Ebay are fake cards. I have known someone that bought what supposed to be a Japanese import anime box set and what she received was a cheap bootleg NOT the item pictured. Y'all will just say "Caveat emptor ". Ebay has pretty much become screw the buyer anyway you can mentality.
Pretty much Ebay has become Seller A buys item from Seller B and relists at double to quadruple the price. A $10 item now sells for $500 dollars not because it is worth it, but the guy selling paid 200 or 300 dollars for it and wants to make money. This has pretty much soured me to Ebay.

The number one cause of not winning an auction, too low a bid. Don't nibble, place your max bid and let the proxy system work. While not set in stone. If your winning more than 20-35% of auctions bid, your paying too much.
