The fees eBay adds to international purchases are customs charges dictated by the US government and are remitted to said government. Ebay doesn't keep the funds. So I'm not sure how you extrapolate that into eBay gouging someone. But in general the US charges import fees on purchases greater than $800. There are additional fees for certain things such as luxury goods. I would suggest that a Google search might provide the information you need, as the charges apply everywhere not just eBay.

Thanks probably AIN"T worth it.  Yeah although EBAY  may not keep it a customs charge could make it now worth the additional  $$

@rosemary6525,

Besides possibly being charged customs fees on some purchases from Japan or other countries, your purchase is also subject to your state's sales tax, which allows cities and counties to add their own tax to the basic 4% State sales tax. If you do not use a +4 zipcode, you are charged the highest combined state+city+county sales tax in the state.

    If you buy from a seller who lists the shipping cost for a package, no sales tax is applied to it, for common carriers USPS, FedEx, UPS.  DHL and some other international carriers shipping may be taxed, and if a seller offers Free shipping, what ever they pay for shipping is also taxed along with the item price.  Those fees are not levied by ebay, but by your state.

Taxes depend upon total cost of item pre-tax & shipping, the destination of the item & that countries import fee taxes. Considering some locations have city, county, state & national taxes - they DO add up quick. Taxes are also not just created by ebay - they are informed of the rate by governments & then collected & remitted to those municipalities.

Just be aware, you could also be liable for additional duties to release if they are not documented with the carrier as paid at time of entry.
